Thailand

This trip has been amazing. It's important to realize that TEFL Heaven is only the first step and has very minimal contact with you during the actual process after the initial interview. They hand you over to their partner Xplor Asia and they work with you through getting a placement school, making sure all of your documents are prepared, your accommodation during orientation, training, and your placement term, and really everything else. Xplore Asia is super helpful and everyone is very kind during the entire process.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers is to just do it. Just like anything else, it isn't perfect. It is fun, it's an amazing experience, and it's really everything you make it.

Be Open Minded!

I was pretty set on teaching high-schoolers in a big city, but I was only offered primary school positions. I was a bit concerned about teaching grade 1 students, but now I'm kinda relieved I got them instead of high school kids. They're SO sweet and adorable :D

My colleagues at Anuban Phanat Suksalai are really friendly and helpful. The school is also surprisingly well-equipped even though it's a government school in a small/medium-sized town (Phanat Nikhom). I even have a microphone if I don't want to raise my voice lol. Also, accept the fact that your school and/agency will not communicate with you timeously on important matters; most communication is piece-meal and last minute.

I'm really grateful to God for the school I got. I only teach 11 hours a week (though this is not typical for most people; it's usually around 20 hours). The town's a bit small for my taste though. There are some restaurants and cafes, and it's 1.5 hours from Bangkok and Pattaya by motorbike, but I'd still prefer to be somewhere I can rent a proper condo with a fantastic view and get a muay thai gym membership.

All in all, this has been a great experience so far. Just make sure you have decent savings to cover the costs of government things like visas and work permits; so far it's cost me about 15k THB to get a non-B visa. You'll financially stabilise after about 2 months though. HAVE AN OPEN MIND! Say yes more than you say no!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Traffic laws are not strictly enforced here, so I've seen families of 4 riding scooters together. I seen people carrying laundry with one hand while steering their scooter with the other. Motorcyclists riding in oncoming traffic on the freeway was wild. People also often use their phones while sitting at the back of motorbikes as a passenger instead of holding on for safety. And of course, no helmets.
Pros
  • Low cost of living and well paid
  • The people are friendly (local and foreign)
  • Lifetime placement assistance
Cons
  • high initial costs to get here and get set up
  • Substandard level of professionalism from Thai agencies and the school
  • The inconvenience of not understanding Thai

Costa Rica

My friends and I wanted to be placed in the same town, TEFL Heaven supported us and was able to find us a placement all in the same school!
We really enjoyed the orientation week at the beginning of the program where we were able to be immersed in the culture and meet others who were doing the program. The team did frequent check-ins to see if we needed any support during our time in Costa Rica. I also love the fact they have lifetime placement!
I would recommend this program to anyone who is looking for a new adventure!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
To be open to different possibilities and options for jobs!
Pros
  • Support throughout the program
  • Orientation week
Cons
  • Expensive

It went great

My life changed in Asia. I think I can build a future here and I've never felt like this before: MYSELF. I recommend to people who have not found the right place in the world yet. Its never too late. I'm single, I'm 29 and I will probably keep moving all my life within Thai. So break the rules and go out from your comfort zone but do it ALONE. it's easier with someone, the real challenge is being alone and figuring out everything by yourself. I'm a solo traveller and I learnt to be my self in this country with no regrets. The life is one and we have to live it fully!!!

What was your funniest moment?
Thai are more straightforward than me, I'm not fat( big) I just practice muai thai
Pros
  • Many friends thai and they love me just for my personality
Cons
  • I want to move here

Great experience!

The TESOL course, location and guidance towards a placement was amazing. I honestly cannot fault them.
The program TEFL Heaven used is called XploreAsia, who have great links to school across Thailand and are able to support you from back at home organising visas and legislation, to then in Thailand finding a job, organising the placement including transportation and accomodation and providing the week orientation and TESOL qualification.
The TESOL was very engaging and informative, we were given the opportunity to present to our peers and students numerous times which really did help. My colleagues that did an online TESOL did not feel nearly as prepared as I did!
Since I have been placed and working in my school I have had numerous check-ins from both TEFL Heaven and XploreAsia, and as I had had a rocky experience in my first month due to things happening back home this was so helpful and what I needed! A very good company with lots of support both academically and pastorally.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Durian! Durian is the King fruit of Thailand, most well known for its distinctive smell and texture. The XploreAsia team had set up a scavendger hunt with a list of fun things to do to become acquainted with Thialand and Hua Hin, some of the things included: going to the monkey temple, ordering food from a restaurant that's menu is only in thai and litter picking on the beach. But eating a durian was one of these and that was a very new experience, with the texture of meat and a unexplainable flavour I cannot say I will be trying it again very soon!
Pros
  • A great support system, both pastorally and academically
  • A good way to meet likeminded people
  • TESOL is completed in person, so it is much easier to get hands on experience
Cons
  • The cost

Alumni Interviews

These are in-depth Q&A sessions with verified alumni.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program as my friends brother completed his TEFL course though TEFL heaven and he could not praise TEFL heaven enough. Before sending in my application I did my research and the reviews online were fantastic and the email response to my questions were quick and the staff quickly made me feel at ease and answered all my questions. I also chose this program because visiting south east Asia was always something I wanted to do as my parents had their honeymoon in Thailand. Furthermore, I also got to do my training on a paradise island!

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The program provided assisted me with assistance in finding accommodation after training (as during training accommodation is included), visa support, advice on what documents to bring, airport transfers, a shuttle coach to travel from Bangkok down to the island I was training on and they supported me in finding a job straight after training. All the program advisors and staff were so lovely and clearly loved what they do which 100% reflected in their work. The only thing I had to do really was to organize my flights and make sure I packed the appropriate items!!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

My advice is, do your research about the program and the country that you are interested in and do not be afraid to ask questions to the program advisors as they are so helpful and there is no such thing as a silly question.

Bring a months worth of savings with you just in case there’s an emergency, take out travel insurance, make sure your passport is valid and get your degree legalized before you fly.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The average day is you would wake up every morning have breakfast with all of your course friends. Then get to the training room for around 10am, the trainer would go through what you would learn during the day I.e lesson plans, grammar lessons, fun tools, tips and games.

You would have a morning of theory on grammar or how to teach a class and then in the afternoon you would practice your teaching in front of your class friends. This isn’t scary everyone is so supportive and in the same boat as you!! By the end of the 3 weeks of training you will feel super confident to teach English to a class.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was missing home as I never travelled alone before. I overcame this quickly as I met so many friends on my program that became like a second family to me, I also was super busy to even realize I was missing home as I was either teaching or travelling. Also the wonders of technology and social media enabled me to speak to my family, boyfriend and friends all the time.

What were a few of your favorite moments?

My favorite few stories are when I was on the way back to my condo in Bangkok from the BTS (Bangkok Skytrain) and on the way back the monsoon rain started, there was no cover for me to go under so I had to walk back to my condo which soaked me. My flip flop broke and i remember looking in the mirror when I got home laughing as I looked so funny.

I also will never forget seeing the sunset over Angkor Wat in Cambodia and I will also never forget the tropical humid heat that hits you when you step off the plane!!

Interview

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory is feeding the elephants in Chiang Mai. We were able to feed the elephants, wash them, and make them food! It was one of those moments where you reflect on how you got here, and how truly blessed you are! Being around those animals and feeding them was the most amazing memory.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Absolutely! I have been able to chat and meet people from all walks of life and from all over the world! I feel like a more well-rounded individual, and have personally grown from the relationships and connections I have made. I always feel so blessed to be able to say that I have had conversations or shared stories with someone who lives halfway across the world from me!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The growth that happens after the course and during their time of being in the classroom! You are challenged not only by teaching and your students but by being in a new culture and environment. It is amazing to see the change within our students! One student was terrified about going abroad, but we made sure we were there every step and it was amazing to see her confidence soar!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Thailand without a doubt - I went through that program myself and I would do it 100X over. The country, the people, and the food are out of this world! We have so many alumni in Thailand and amazing connections with the schools! Even though every program has its unique characteristics, or Thailand program has been around the longest!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I think our company is unique because every single one of us on the team have gone through TEFL Heaven ourselves. We know first hand what our program are like and how they can transform your life!

I have been beyond proud of our team especially the last few months because we have just continued to grow and always overcome any hurdle that comes our way!

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Teamwork and communication! Our team is constantly communicating and making it a wonderful place to work in. Even though we are remote and all of us live in different countries at the moment, we are always there for each other. But not only that, we care deeply about our candidates and future teachers because we have all gone through this exact program ourself!
