Going through TEAN was such a rewarding experience all around. Traveling by myself to Sydney, Australia I never felt alone because I was with TEAN. I chose TEAN because they set up your flights, housing, roommates, pre semester trips and spring break. This program takes all the anxiety and stress out of the planning to go abroad and during your abroad experience. TEAN offers a five day orientation in Sydney before the semester starts. This gives students time to explore, learn, but most importantly adjust to a new environment. Overall the staff is extremely friendly and helpful throughout the whole process and will guide you throughout your whole semester!

Every day in Sydney was something different, and I got to know so many different people, and enjoyed my time with the Aussies I got to meet in class. Everyone I had the chance to spend time with was so helpful, and all of the other students I was with enjoyed going out and exploring just as much as I did!

What would you improve about this program?

I wish I could have been there even longer.

Going to Australia was always a dream of mine and TEAN made it come true. I think studying abroad is an experience that every college student should do. I mean come on who wouldn't want to spend 5 months in another country?! Experiencing a new culture is so eye opening and actually changed the career path that I wanted to follow. And I'm much happier with a my new one. TEAN made the whole process of studying abroad so easy and basically stress free (the only stress was not being home for 5 months and the 14hr time difference, but I made it work!)! The only thing I would do differently would to do a year instead of just one semester. The hardest part about studying abroad is the leaving of your host country.

What would you improve about this program?

Honestly nothing comes to mind truthfully.

Everything about my study abroad program was incredible! Australia has so much to offer and you really get to feel like you live there, rather than just visiting. I saw some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and ate some of the most amazing food. I believe that the main reason I loved Australia so much was because I went through The Education Abroad Network (TEAN). TEAN is extremely organized and they're with you every step of the way. I never felt alone and knew that if I ever needed something TEAN staff would be there for me. All of the staff were young and so nice and had the greatest tips and advice on everything-- travel, culture, food, etc. TEAN's accommodations were amazing. We staying in apartments with incredible views of the city with multiple balconies.TEAN's orientation was so much fun and I learned so much during it, not to mention I made some of my best friends during it. TEAN's post trip (Byron Bay) and pre semester trip (Thailand) were two of the best trips I went on while abroad. They are so organized and amazing!

What would you improve about this program?

Nothing-- It was amazing! I only wish I could have stayed longer.

My experience in Australia was phenomenal. Everyday was a new adventure! I was very fortunate to travel to so many cities such as Brisbane, Byron Bay, Darwin, Kakadu, Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast and Cairns. I chose this program because it fit well with my curriculum since I am a Hospitably Business major and when I read the program outline I was very interested in learning more about the topics covered. the TEAN advisors were more than helpful while on our trip! Whenever I had a question it was always answered, even if it had to be the next day. During our time in Australia we mainly stayed in hostels, but during our two-week period at the University of New South Wales we stayed in the dorms. Personally I loved staying in the hostels because it was a great way to meet people, not only from our study abroad group, but from all over the world. One of my most memorable experiences was climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Learning about the construction and work that went into such an iconic bridge was so interesting. I am so thankful for my time abroad and for the staff that led us through some of the most amazing experiences!

What would you improve about this program?

The only improvement I would have for this program would to be integrate all of the 3 summer programs together a little more. We all stayed together as a large group, but would separate at different times. With so many people I felt like I was still meeting people the last few days of the program.

I couldn't be happier with my choices about studying abroad- both going to Australia and choosing to do it through The Education Abroad Network. TEAN made everything so easy for me and their staff is amazing. Any questions I had were immediately answered. I participated on the pre-semester trip to the Great Barrier Reef and the mid-semester trip to Thailand. I strongly encourage future students to go on them- they were two of the best trips of my life. I had the best 5 months I could have ever asked for and learned so much about Australian culture. I also traveled to New Zealand, Melbourne, and Byron Bay all of which were incredible. I couldn't have asked for a better location of housing (I was in Bondi Junction in the Meriton) because I was in between the beach and the city, close to school, and right above a train/bus station. It was truly a semester I will never forget and looking back I wouldn't change a thing.

What would you improve about this program?

Not really anything about the program but I wish I did more research about the different schools in Sydney before choosing UNSW.

Lived in Coogee (highly reccomend!) And spent February - May 2008 at UNSW. Amazing expereince, the program was very supportive and I receomend dong the extra trips and breaks and it was great to meet other people throught the program, friends I still have for life!

What would you improve about this program?

I would have liekd more support in choosing classes and having the grades not transfer back to U.S. as the system is so differnet - I wish I had been advised to take more Australian specific classes

At first I was very hesitant about going so far away for such a long time with people I didnt know. However, TEAN made the time leading up to leaving and my time in Australia so easy. Every time I had any sort of question regardless of how dumb it was, I was emailed back immediatley with an answer.

Once in Sydney, we found out just how amazing our apartments were. We lived in serviced apartment that were right over a huge bus and train station in Sydney as well as had access to a gym, pool and tennis court. Living here was amazing and made it easy to travel anywhere.

One of my favorite parts of TEAN was the planned trips they offer. I went on a pre-semester trip to the Great Barrier Reef as well as a spring break trip to Thailand. Not only were TEAN staff on these trips with us but they were fully planned so we didnt have to plan anything ourselves. Thailand especially gave me a chance to see tons of cities and islands that I never would have been able to do on my own.

TEAN is an amazing program and made my abroad experience amazing, I 100% recommend this!!

Why did you choose this program?

At first I was inquiring to a few websites about where I could study abroad and TEAN stuck out with their overwhelmingly positive feedback.

I read through every review and they all seemed beyond passionate about their experience. It seemed worth asking about, and the support I got from TEAN both over the phone and by e-mail constantly made me feel assured I was making the right decision.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

This school was not affiliated with my university but by some random chance, my advisor was there a year ago on a sabbatical. He helped me match certain classes I needed back home with the ones that would be offered over there. With his and the Dean's approval I was able to get my full semester's credit even though I was technically on educational leave.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Pack an excessive amount of socks and underwear. That was probably my biggest blunder.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Back home I usually sleep from 2-10am and then start my day. While in Sydney it surprisingly usually looked like:

6:30-7 Wake up/shower.
7-8:00 Eat breakfast, change into my suit (yup, you read that right).
8:15-11:45 Lecture time (with a 30 minute break for coffee and a muffin).
11:45 - ? Lunch, catch up with friends.
From here is where everyone splits off. Some groups go to the beach to surf/snorkel/cliff jump or just relax. This could be time to study, workout, or play sports.
5:30-7 Dinner followed by either more of the above or a walk down to town to get a drink, do some karaoke, and maybe win some meat trays at bingo.

Weekends are random. Usually groups of people will plan trips different places around the country. Don't limit yourself though. I traveled to Brisbane by myself the second week to go see a rap battle and it was one of the highlights of the trip.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it and/or how did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was getting a lousy roommate. Someone who doesn't respect personal space, comes back at weird hours, is messy, or snores (I had a bad experience earlier in the year).

TEAN helps by giving you a survey to help match you with a similar person, so that was a plus. The best piece of advice is go in with an open mind and don't assume something bad is going to happen. I did the latter and would be critical in my head of the little things he would do that would annoy me.

As time went on I started to realize just how good I had it. Also if your roommate does do something you don't like, approach them in a non-confrontational way early on. It'll be better for both of you. Chances are, they might not even realize what they're doing is affecting you that way.

How long was it before you felt comfortable and at home in your host country?

To all my introverts/high functioning people with anxiety:

The first few days were a roller coaster of emotions. There were many moments that were really emotionally draining or where I felt like I was out of place.

I promise you it will come to pass and only make you stronger when you return home. The school and program both go out of their way to make sure you feel at ease as quickly as possible. Just remember to stay true to yourself and everything will work out.

What is your favorite travel memory?

This is such a hard question!

I think my favorite one most recently would have to be waking up in Queenstown every morning and opening my shades to see Cecil Peak across Lake Wakatipu. It's an absolutely unreal sight; photos don't do Queenstown justice.

I understand now why all of our students go back again after their orientation!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I had a student that went on our University of Otago program in New Zealand which houses a number of international students together with a local kiwi flatmate to help them get acclimated to the area.

This student, in particular, had made such a great connection with her flatmates that they still talked regularly and she was planning to go visit some of them in their home countries over the summer.

It's great when study abroad experiences open up students to more cultural opportunities not just relating to the country they’re in, and more future travel!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I love our Semester in Shanghai program. I've fallen completely in love with Shanghai as a city -- there's so much to do and see. Plus then you can travel through the rest of China, in addition to the Chengdu and Beijing excursions we include in the program.

I'd personally love to see the sunrise over the Great Wall. I'm always so jealous when I see the photos each semester! Also, the language program is an excellent opportunity. It's incredibly immersive and I'd love to advance my Chinese language skills.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I really like that at TEAN it's very one-on-one when working with students and we focus on a specific part of the world. It gives you the opportunity to know your students well and your regions intimately. I love being able to tell students about my favorite places to get pork bao in Shanghai or where the local farmer’s market in Wellington is.

Working in an office in Chicago, we don't get to see students much but have the opportunity to get to know them through their pre-departure calls and emails which is really nice.

I'm always proud of our team here, but especially when I see someone working closely with a student when they run into an issue or just need extra help. We really try to go above and beyond for our students here and when I see colleagues going an extra mile to make study abroad work for the students, I get a swell of pride for what we do.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Being able to adapt and change. We're constantly revising our processes and looking at what works and what doesn't for students and then making changes to make the process easier.

You get students from all different backgrounds, ranging from those who have traveled extensively to those who have never even set foot on a plane before.

We want to make sure everything is clear so that whatever your background is in terms of traveling and studying abroad, it's made easy for you - and fun!
