Belize 2025

Going on the Therapy Abroad program in Belize was truly eye-opening. Belize is English-speaking, so though you’ll hear Creole, communication isn’t a huge barrier unlike in many other Latin American countries. That made working with kids and families way richer and more authentic. It was helpful experience to work on my clinical skills in documentation. It was very hard at times but watching the kids smile and make progress was worth it. There were some instance of supervisors not being clear on expectations.

What was your funniest moment?
Miss pati and singing songs on the bus
Pros
  • Caye caulker
  • Children
  • Food
Cons
  • Workload
  • Not breaks between camp and intervention
  • Wasn’t clear on what types camp entails

CSD Belize Trip 2025

I had a great and fulfilling time with Therapy Abroad! It was challenging and impactful. I will never forget my trip to San Ignacio, Belize! I got to learn so much about the Speech Pathology field and about the amazing culture Belize has. The trip was challenging at times, but it was so worth it. I left feeling proud of myself and group members for all the hard work we did together. I built great connections with my group members, supervisors, and clients. I am very glad I took the time to experience this trip.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I got to witness an occupational therapist help a child in need walk for the first time by getting them a walker. Resources were scarce, but she and the other therapy staff abroad found a way to make it happen
Pros
  • Experience in my field
  • Learned so much
  • Amazing group members
Cons
  • Can be a little overwhelming at first
  • I was tired sometimes
  • Emotionally challenging at times

Belize CSD Program Review

I learned to overcome my fear on this trip, many times. From my fear of heights when we went zip lining and jumping off the second level into the ocean, to my fear of singing in public at the karaoke bar, I felt like this trip made me realize that I have what it takes to get out of my comfort zone and overcome anything I want to. I also tried thing that I’ve never tried before prior to coming on this trip, like cliff jumping in a dark cave, drinking from an actual coconut, going to a zoo at night, and creating one of my best paintings ever so far.

What was your funniest moment?
When we were snorkeling, I turned out and made a direct eye contact with a manatee. It was just staring at me like “Who is this human? I might as well say hi.”
Pros
  • The views, including the views that I woke up to at all three places we stayed at, were absolutely beautiful.
  • I had the opportunity to work with three different clients throughout one week at Tykes camp, and bonded with all of them.
  • The adventurous aspect was great because I did a lot of new things on this trip that I haven’t done at all before.
Cons
  • I wish there was better communication in the group chat regarding specific group activities. My roommate and I took a shower after coming from the beach to look good for the photos, & when meeting the group we were told that they already took the photos.
  • There were moments were I felt like I wasn’t being heard, listened to, taken seriously, and like I was being excluded by the other students in the group.
  • I also wished that everyone would get an equal opportunity to lead a home visit, apart from just being an observer, as we all paid an equal amount of money to go on this trip.

Open Enrollment Belize Trip

This is my second trip with Therapy Abroad, and once again, they do a fantastic job providing a blend of clinical activities to enhance cultural competence and adventurous excursions to experience the amazing country. We were given opportunities to fully immerse ourselves within the culture building relationships with local people in a variety of locations as well as opportunities to experience the natural beauty and wildlife of Belize. I highly recommend a study abroad trip with Therapy Abroad.

Belize 2025

I loved all my supervisor and peers I went along with! I genuinely have no concerns or anything to fix! I enjoyed every aspect of the trip from Tykes Camp to Caye Caulker. Therapy Abroad is the opportunity to challenge yourself to a new environment, along with new experiences. It was my first time out of the country and I have no regrets with Belize being my first choice. The people are very friendly and make you feel comfortable and supported every step of the way. If you ever feel you can’t travel alone, you could with Therapy Abroad.

An unBELIZEable experience!

My experience with Therapy Abroad was amazing! From being in clinic to going on excursions, there was always something to do and something to learn. Belize is a country full of diversity and culture, and coming here is a great way to experience life outside of the U.S. I loved the support I received from my supervisors and felt like Belize became a home away from home. Everyone was super welcoming and was always there to answer questions. Not to mention this was a great way to make new friends from all over the country!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do not be afraid to go out of your comfort zone! If you’re anything like me, trying new things can be nerve-racking but you will feel so accomplished by the dent of this trip.
Pros
  • Ability to try new things.
  • Gained clinical experience.
  • Met new, amazing people!
Cons
  • Can be really hot; sometimes you will have to go without AC.
  • Get used to bugs! We’re in the rainforest, there will be lots of creatures (especially in the outdoor restrooms)
  • Long drives from place to place.

SLP Belize Program

This trip was such an amazing and rewarding experience with therapy abroad. It was so much fun to explore with new people, experience different cultures, and learn more about the field that I love. I would absolutely recommend this program to anyone who wants to help kids around the world, gain clinical experience, and adventure in a new country! If I had to, I could not pick a favorite part of this trip because every aspect was so amazing and I am definitely considering doing it again in the future!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Went snorkeling in the barrier reef and swam with manatees, sharks, and sting rays!
