CDS: Belize

Traveling with Therapy Abroad and spending two weeks in Belize was amazing! It was super beneficial because we worked very closely with our supervisors, who were all SLP's. We were able to build connections, get advice, ask questions, and gain hands-on experience in the field. The camp was a great learning experience. The food throughout the whole trip was amazing and the staff was so helpful. I would highly recommend this program to anyone interested in speech therapy.

CSD Program in Belize

Therapy Abroad provided me with first-hand clinical experience that I was unable to obtain during the past year or so of undergrad due to the pandemic. It allowed me to further explore my interest in speech-language pathology and learn from amazing SLPs and peers. I met so many amazing women whom I hope to stay in touch with as our futures progress, and I was able to learn a lot about the culture and the people of Belize while I was there. We were truly immersed in their way of living, which is not something that can always be said while visiting other countries on vacations.

Awesome Experience

I really enjoyed getting to know other speech-language pathology undergraduate students from all over the United States. The supervisors were amazing and super helpful when it came to running Tykes Camp. It was interesting to learn about Belizean culture, which provided helpful knowledge when working with our clients, especially with the language aspect of their culture. I wish the itinerary would have been followed more closely to allow for smoother scheduling. Overall, it was a great once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Therapy Abroad CDS- Belize

As a communication disorders and sciences student, this trip was the perfect hands-on learning opportunity to introduce me into the diverse field of speech-language pathology. During my time in Belize, I got to challenge what I learned in the class room and put it to use in a multicultural environment working with people of various ages, disorders, etc. Although I learned so much about speech-language pathology, I really enjoyed the activities that we did during our trip such as zip lining in the jungle, cave tubing, visiting the monkey sanctuary, etc. However, my favorite part of the trip was learning about the Belizean culture and meeting the kind people that live there.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I recommend bringing lots of bug spray, sunscreen, and journaling throughout your time in Belize!

Therapy Abroad

I loved this program and wish I could have stayed longer!! It was so fun to learn from the SLP’s and everyone else on the trip. Everyone knows different methods on how to approach different things. Every site we visited with different patients made me learn so much I would never learn in the classroom. The adventures we all did were so fun as well! It was cool to meet people from all over the United States that i will keep in touch with. Definitely recommend everyone to go on this amazing trip!!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
There is so much more to speech pathology than just speech. On this trip I had a child with behavioral issues. I did not even think about how we can see behavioral kids as well. After being with this child all day, he accomplished the goal we set for him. It was very eye opening and rewarding to see this patient

Trip of a Lifetime!

This trip was absolutely life changing. You learn so much in such a short amount of time and truly feel like you’re making a difference in these families’ lives. Not only do I feel like this trip better prepared for graduate level work, but it made me take on the field with an entirely new perspective. It was also so empowering to be on this trip with such determined, hard working, and supportive people to lift you up throughout the journey! I’m so excited to bring my new level of skills and confidence into the field with me! Couldn’t recommend Therapy Abroad more!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open minded about learning new things and do not get discouraged if your first session doesn’t go the way you planned. This program is all about being flexible and having to improvise when need be. By the end of the trip, it feels like you’ve been doing it for years. Take it all in and enjoy every second, it goes by so fast!

Review

I really enjoyed my experience as I not only learned a lot from the SLPs, but also was able to make some great connections with other student in my field. I loved interacting with clients and putting my skills to the test. It was also great to watch the SLPs work with clients and learn from their interactions on other ways to engage during an evaluation or therapy session. In addition, I enjoyed having a mix of client interactions along with adventure days as it helped break up the time and allowed us to see and learn more about the country. I also felt having a group leader was super beneficial. Danielle was so fun and she really helped all of the members feel comfortable and supported! Having a grad student ans someone close in age was so beneficial to my learning on this trip as well, without a group leader I think students may feel intimidated by the SLPs.

What was your funniest moment?
Some of my funniest moments occurred when hanging out with the girls as we would joke around and be silly with one another!
