Therapy Abroad Belize 2025

My Therapy Abroad trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I got to experience the wonders and culture of Belize as well as learn many of the nuances that come with speech therapy. I had the opportunity to interact with local special education officers as well as licensed speech therapists from the states. I had the chance to try authentic Belizean dishes and learned about the culture that was created from the blend of many different people groups. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to enter this field.

100% recommend!!!

Therapy Abroad was so supportive throughout each day, no matter the activity. They would provide a detailed schedule each night so that we all knew what to expect tomorrow and how to properly prepare.

Therapy Abroad also ensured that we felt safe and comfortable by providing the same taxi drivers to and from each destination all week.

Most importantly, they truly cared for our wellness and provided water all day and encouraged us to hydrate throughout the day. They also made sure that we were well fed by providing the most amazing meals and snacks. Therapy abroad staff was knowledgeable and welcoming.

Pros
  • Downtime for documentation
  • Contact with therapy abroad staff
Cons
  • Dinners could have been scheduled earlier
  • Difficult to hear instructions at times with such a large group- consider some type of mic

An amazing experience

This is one of the best things I have done in college. Having the opportunity to leave the country and help others in need was such a life changing and fulfilling experience I will never forget. Alejandro and Patty were such amazing people to work with and they made my classmates feel welcomed and safe. I was really nervous coming the country because I did not know what I was getting myself into. Then when I met the team I felt like I could do this and nothing could stop us. Thank you so much for having me Therapy Abroad!

Belize Speech Pathology

Had a wonderful time and was kept comfortable throughout the entire experience despite being worried about medical issues. It was a lot of fun and felt like a vacation despite doing work everyday. The food, accommodations, and staff were all very nice and I would definitely recommend this program to any of my speech major friends. I will most definitely miss the client we had this week the most when I go back home. I am very thankful to have taken part in this experience!!! You better Belize it!

Therapy Abroad- Belize 2025

This was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever gotten. From learning about new cultures and traveling to a place I have never been before, to getting the most practical and tangible clinical experience. I loved being able to experience all different parts of Belize and being able to do all the fun events they offer. I also loved being able to get hands on experience being an SLP. I felt supported and guided the entire time and if I had questions I felt comfortable enough to ask, knowing I would get well thought out answers. I’m so thankful for this opportunity and couldn’t have asked for a better program to go with. Thank you therapy abroad!!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was chosen to lead a screening and treatment session for a home visit on the last day in Punta Gorda. I was so nervous because this was my first time ever taking the lead and having my peers watching me. My fellow clinicians and supervisor provided such great support and made me feel confident in myself and my knowledge. I ended up doing well and my session was successful!
Pros
  • Adventures: cave tubing, ziplining, beach, jungle
  • Housing
  • Hands on clinical and documentation experience
Cons
  • Bugs
  • Heat
  • Preparation for tykes camp not going as planned

Belize 2025

This trip offered a variety of experiences, from a stay in the rainforest and sleeping in a cabana to chocolate making. Therapy abroad offered a nice blend of work and play, often pushing us to new limits. During therapy time we had to get out of our comfort zone with taking control of all aspects of camp. The supervisors were all incredibly kind, helpful, and responsive. The biggest bit of feedback back I have is I really wish our day to day was more organized and planned further in advance. Many time what we were doing was finalized day of, causing disorganization and stress.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I saw was the villages we did home visits in! It was really interesting to see how the villagers live and how differently they live from westerners.
Pros
  • Cultural enrichment
  • Diverse experiences
  • New relationships
Cons
  • Bugs
  • Disorganized
  • So much chicken

I have had such a great experience in Belize with Therapy Abroad! We got to live right in the middle of Belizean life, and got to experience such incredible food, culture, and more! There were lots of fun surprises along the way, and the entire trip was a great mix of fun and valuable experience. From zip lining to cave tubing to jumping off the pier into the ocean and binding with the clients at Tykes camp, every aspect was such a character building experience, and I am so grateful for getting to experience it and make great friendships along the way!

What was your funniest moment?
Joining in the Garifuna celebration of life!
Pros
  • Getting to experience being immersed in the culture and getting to experience Belize first-hand.
  • Free time to experience the village.
  • Experiencing lots of different food.
Cons
  • Being unprepared for the first two days.
  • Sometimes there were a few communication issues.

I have loved my experience with Therapy Abroad and feel like I have learned so much! Partnering with the special education program in Punta Gorda has been such a unique opportunity to serve their community while also learning and preparing for a career as an SLP. Belize as a whole is also beautiful, making our adventures scenic and exciting for the entire group. The main place we stayed- Piece of Ground in Punta Gorda- was a lovely home base, and the owners were so kind, cooking for us every day and sharing their town with us!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Keep an open mind and immerse yourself in every experience as much as you can!
Pros
  • Opportunity to serve an underserved community
  • Great clinical experience
  • Beautiful scenery
Cons
  • Unprepared for the first 2 days
  • Wished there were more days of camp
