Puerto Rico Study Abroad

I loved learning about the new culture, it was amazing to emerge ourselves in it and meet so many amazing people. I also loved the food we had! Very grateful for this experience and everything I got to learn. I was able to see what I have learned in school in a different language with kids who I had never met before. The program that we were a part of helped me work in a fast pace environment, my classmates and I were able to use our problem solving skills in order to provide the best services possible to the kids. Learning about my field in a different language was definitely an eye opening experience. My first language is Spanish, however, their dialect was different from the one I know and it helped me learn new words and implement therapy in a different way.

Study Abroad Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico study abroad was filled with great adventures and wonderful opportunities to work with students from other universities. Everyday, students were provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a wonderful itinerary outlining the entire trip. No matter what, there was always something new and fun to explore or learn about the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and their culture as it pertains to Speech Language Pathology. Overall, this experience was one I will never forget, and cherish for a lifetime.

Therapy Abroad - Puerto Rico

Traveling to Puerto Rico had always been on my bucket list, so when the opportunity to study abroad over the winter break came up, I decided to sign up. The trip was exciting, educational, adventurous, and well thought out! Special shout out to Matt and Chad for all of their planning and hard work to see this trip come to life. Visiting the university and being able to interact and share therapy resources/techniques with the other SLP students was a great experience. I am so thankful I was able to participate in this study abroad group and make new memories with my classmates!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open to new experiences, foods, languages that you may not be familiar with! It was definitely a culture shock seeing the new foods, but I am glad to have tried the different foods.

Puerto Rico

Chad and Matt were super helpful throughout our entire time in both locations of Puerto Rico in San Juan and Mayaguez. There was never a dull moment and they always made sure that the activities were in the interests of the faculty and students. When a bump in the road came along, both Chad and Matt were able to quickly provide solutions to the group. When it came to food and dining, they were both also very accommodating to the choices and times at which everyone wanted, or did not want, to eat. Very accommodating and very professional individuals!

What was your funniest moment?
Funniest moment of the entire trip had to be watching/participating in the group dance workshop at the University of Albizu in San Juan.

Study Abroad Puerto Rico Universidad Albizu San Juan/Mayaguez

One of the most memorable trips I have ever taken in my life. I was looking for new ways to challenge myself as a Hispanic/bilingual graduate student and saw this opportunity as a way to get out of my comfort zone. The study abroad program in Puerto Rico has strengthened my skills as a bilingual therapist and improved my ability to communicate with Spanish-speaking communities. Hats off to Chad and Matt who made this trip one of the most memorable moments in our journeys, careers, and lifelong memories.

Study of Broad Puerto Rico

Chad&Matteo were the leaders of our group, in my experience with them. They both did an excellent job of having tourist spots picked out such as food reservations or historical site options relating to the cultural experience within the country visiting, while keeping in mind of the group/students interest.
From getting to know the group leaders establishinig a good rapport with the group leaders then transitioning to activities planned out for made the experience even better. By going on this study of abroad trip this has easily been one of the best experiences of my life.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was getting the chance to surf at one of the beaches in Puerto Rico!
Pros
  • Making the experience safe.
  • Having options to pick from.
  • The rapport established between the group leaders and the students.
Cons
  • Getting more of a feel in terms of the food places from that particular country.
  • More opportunities to travel with the van near housing/hotel area.
