Dominica Review

I liked this trip a lot. There weren’t a ton of physical therapy opportunities and it was more of a “chill” vibe which was fine. I wish we did more beach/ocean time because we really only got a few hours of free time because everything after dinner was closed. i would reccomend this trip to physical therapy students aspiring to go to Pt school because it would strengthen their application and shows that you have a wide range of abilities and good volunteer hours. Overall this trip was super fun and I would do it again

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I saw a green sea turtle and octopus which was crazy
Pros
  • Healthcare experience
  • Fun adventures
  • Serving a community
Cons
  • Not a lot of free time

Belize Therapy Abroad

The staff were all so incredibly kind, fun, and knowledgeable. The academics were a great challenge but not severe enough to make it unenjoyable. We made an impact on students, saw amazing sights, ate delicious food. We also gained valuable clinical observation hours that will be useful while applying to a graduate program.

The highlight of my trip is hard to pinpoint, but it might be snorkeling in San Pedro. We swam through beautiful reefs and saw so much marine life.

I would certainly come back to Belize and I recommend this Therapy Abroad program for CSD students!

Pros
  • Food
  • Beach
  • Helping students

Duquesne University - Belize 2024

I think the trip was fantastic. It was an extremely rewarding and enriching experience. Everyone was very kind. The country itself is breathtakingly beautiful, and the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture while providing essential Speech and Language Therapy services was truly fulfilling. I am grateful for the chance to contribute to such meaningful work.

However, there were moments during the trip where I felt rushed and a bit on edge, particularly when tasked with specific responsibilities. On the last day of the Tykes camp, instead of being guided and supported, I found myself being directed on what to do with the kids, which left me feeling somewhat overwhelmed. A bit more assistance in these situations would have been helpful.

But overall, it was a 10/10 experience and I would 100% do it again!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring lots of bug spray and enjoy every moment!
Pros
  • Housing Accommodations
  • The children !!
  • Very efficient meal times (never felt too hungry)
Cons
  • The bugs (I know that’s uncontrollable)
  • Felt a little rushed at times

Things I wish I would’ve known

Some things I wish I would’ve known is that unscented bug spray doesn’t work as well as the scented kind. On days I used the unscented it felt like I was being bitten nonstop but when I used the scented they didn’t seem as bad. Also that mosquitoes are attracted to black clothing so try to avoid black clothing. I also wished I would’ve only taken a larger backpack as a carry on and one checked bag to avoid having to lug around multiple bags. I would also bring a larger water bottle to avoid having to fill it up multiple times since water can be hard to get at times. I would also recommend water shoes for Punta Gorda, since the water can be rocky at times. I also learned that you can get seasick while snorkeling, so I would make sure to bring Dramamine even if you don’t think you’re going to get sick. The last thing I wish I would’ve known is to bring as much unscented toiletries as possible as it keeps the bugs from biting you.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve racking moment for me was the tykes camp. Since I am only entering my 3rd year of the 5 year program I was a little nervous knowing that everything was all new to me. However it was the complete opposite. All of the therapy abroad staff helped to ensure that not only I but the other girls were doing an amazing job throughout the duration of the camp. Due to this, I was able to overcome my nerves and have the best time throughout the camp.
Pros
  • Building friendships with other SLP students
  • Being able to learn and explore Belize
  • Helping the children of Belize receive the services that they need
Cons
  • Being bitten by bugs
  • The heat/ limited ac
  • The long bus ride from Punta Gorda to Belize City

Belize Study Abroad

I had an amazing time on this trip. It was a great mix of academics and fun! I would have liked the trip to be even longer which shows it was a great time! 12 days would be a great amount to divide up the travel days and have an extra day or 2 in Caye Caulker! With more time, there is more free time for the students to explore as well. Zip lining, snorkeling, distillery tour, and the spice farm were my personal favorite activities during the trip! I loved a piece of ground and staying in the same room with all the girls, we had a blast!

What was your funniest moment?
Dance parties at night in our room.
Pros
  • Great Academic Experience
  • Becoming closer with classmates/teacher
  • Beautiful place with fun activities
Cons
  • Bugs
  • Long travel days
  • Very early mornings

Belize Travel Abroad

I loved this experience. Even though it was my first time traveling I had no worries about anything since everything was set up for us. Amazing country and amazing people.❤️I got to celebrate my 21st birthday with the group of wonderful women traveling with me. Our tour guides were awesome and all of our tours were beautiful experiences. My favorite part was going to a local preschool and reading to the children. After reading to them we arts and crafts with them that related to the book we read. We also gave them a lot of books 📚

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was the first flight that felt like a roller coaster. And My birthday was so much fun during the trip.

HPU 2024 Belize Trip

This was my first trip with Therapy Abroad to Belize and I had a blast! The trip was very well organized from the time we arrived until we left. We got to provide physical therapy services to a wide variety of patients. These patients don’t typical have access to any physical therapy services and were very grateful that we were able to help them. I learned so much from this trip about physical therapy, the healthcare system, and Belize in general! I had so much fun and I hope to go again next year!

Belize 2024 HPU Student Trip

This is my second year in a row traveling with students through Therapy Abroad to Belize to provide much needed physical therapy services to their residents. We say a wide range of ages from young children to a 100 year old! Everything is so organized and well done from lodging to the set of of our clinic, arranging activities, meals, and excursions. The students learn so much about the cultures, languages, and healthcare system in Belize and how it differs from the U.S. They also had invaluable patient care experiences.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
