Students are often given reusable bags and water bottles upon arrival to limit single plastic use

Students are provided with instructions for acquiring transportation passes to promote use of public transportation rather than taxis

I absolutely loved my time in Rome with CEA CAPA! The staff were incredibly friendly, supportive, and always ready to help with anything we needed. Classes were interactive and connected directly to the city, making every lesson feel meaningful and exciting. From cultural excursions and cooking classes to exploring historic streets with amazing friends, every day was an adventure. Studying abroad in Rome broadened my perspective, helped me grow, and gave me memories I’ll cherish forever. I can’t wait to return one day!

CEA CAPA Business and Psychology

I had the best time of my life while abroad with this program. Starting with education, they had great options for classes within my major like Positive Psychology and also offered great classes like Food and Culture or Rome Across the Ages: Art and Architecture. I got to learn a branch of psychology not usually offered by my home university, while also immersing myself with the culture around me and learning the history of Rome. The classes were only once a week and I was done with classes by Wednesday. This allowed me to travel Thursday through Sunday. Rome was super easy to travel out of, whether it was via train or plane. CEA CAPA offered great travel opportunities through the program that allowed me to get closer with my classmates, which really helped since I came into the program knowing no one. Even on the days we didn't travel, my roommates and I had the best time exploring Rome and all it had to offer. The Vatican, the Trevi, the night life, etc. This program is one I will never stop raving over. I highly recommend Rome as your abroad location, and I extra recommend going with CEA.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I got to travel a lot during my time abroad and I had the best times of life. I would change not going in a little more prepared with trips planned and having reached out to my roommates more. I went in blind, which ended up amazing anyways, but I felt I might of missed out on some other amazing opportunities and trips because I did less planning than others.
Pros
  • I had plenty of time to travel and access to basically any location I wanted.
  • Location was very walkable.
  • I never ran out of things to do and see in Rome.

Engineering in Rome Summer 2025

I studied Thermodynamics in Rome during the summer before my senior year and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've travelled extensively in the past but actually being able to live in another country for an extended period of time was unlike any trip I've taken before. The academics had challenging aspects and required some work after class, but also weren't overbearing and I still was able to enjoy my trip fully and travel almost every weekend. The only regret I had about this program was not doing a full semester - 2 months went by faster than I could have ever imagined!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
We almost missed our train in Lake Como because the bus that ran once an hour to the train station was full. We met a woman from Hungary who was living in Italy and also spoke english, and she called a nearby hotel and requested us a shuttle to save the day!
Pros
  • Meet new people your age
  • See the world outside of what you know
  • Gain independence and travel confidence
Cons
  • My roommate snored louder than I thought humanly possible
  • Lots of people due to Jubilee in Rome
  • Restaurants were expensive for us college students due to tourism so we had to cook a lot.

I visited so many famous landmarks. I also was able to try so many new foods. There was so much to constantly do while in Rome. I was also able to meet so many new people.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was able to watch so many different surgeries.
Pros
  • So much to learn
  • So many people to meet
Cons
  • None

Rome Spring 2025

Studying abroad in Rome was one of my highlights of college so far. I had never been to Europe or ever really traveled outside of the country so the entirety of this experience was new to me. I got to live in a beautiful apartment with my four best friends and we traveled almost every weekend. We got to go for a helicopter ride in Switzerland, ride camels in Morocco, visit the Eiffel tower, swim in the blue lagoon in Malta, boat around the Amalfi coast, and make many more incredible memories together.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I think the best advice I could give to someone looking to complete a semester abroad is to live in the moment and try to experience as much as you can.
Pros
  • I loved how walkable the city of Rome was
  • I loved living with an Italian roommate
  • I loved how central the city of Rome is to travel in and out of
Cons
  • I spent a lot of money over the period of time which I was there
  • I was homesick a lot

Rome is Amazing

Studying abroad in Rome was an incredible experience that combined academics with cultural immersion. Through the CEA CAPA program, I was able to take engaging courses on Rome’s religious and cultural history while visiting historic sites like the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Catacombs of San Callisto for free with class. Living and learning in one of the best neighborhoods in Rome helped me grow more independent and gave me a deeper appreciation for the world beyond the classroom. I loved living with locals, trying new food, and having so much support from my program to make the best of this experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Traveling alone to Rome for the first time! I was so nervous about leaving and being abroad alone, but it made me more independent and self-reliant. As soon as I arrived in Rome my nerves went away.
Pros
  • Live with locals
  • Cheap living
  • Program provides and sets everything up for you
Cons
  • Mainly just business class offerings

Study abroad in Rome Review

My experience abroad was something I will remember for the rest of my life. It was an amazing opportunity to grow as an individual, immerse myself in new cultures, and build relationships with others. My advice to anyone going abroad is to try and go outside and explore as much as possible because you'll miss it and wish you did so much more when you leave! Also, try to build friendships with the others that go because it's a special type of bond that will last even when you get back from the trip.

What was your funniest moment?
It's hard to pick a funniest moment because we were all probably laughing more than not! There were so many inside jokes and funny memories by the end of the trip that we still reference now. One that I can think of is when it was like midnight and we were on a train back from a weekend trip all very tired, and a guy got on the train with an accordion and started playing despacito so loudly
Pros
  • Great resources and help from the CEA staff
  • amazing food and things to do in Rome
  • the friendships I made while abroad
Cons
  • I was very homesick the first week

All of Rome Was My Classroom

I was an engineering student taking Thermodynamics and Art and Architecture in Ancient Rome (A&A). A&A was such an eye-opening experience because our class was onsite almost every day. We would start our classes in the Roman Forum, around the Colosseum, and in popular museums around Rome. It allowed me to learn about ancient Rome in a way that I couldn't back at Michigan State University. It's the class experiences like these that make studying abroad worth it. It was an incredible experience, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to explore Rome.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I think the most unfamiliar thing I ate was cuttlefish. I thought it would be a dish like salmon or cod, but it was actually a bunch of fish chunks that looked like brains.
Pros
  • Class experiences that you couldn't get anywhere else
  • Form strong friendships because everyone is in the same boat
Cons
  • It was a little overwhelming to be in a big city like Rome
