About Program

Study abroad in Rome and discover la dolce vita - the sweet life. Imagine studying art history as you gaze up at the Sistine Chapel, or learning theology just a few blocks from the Vatican. Life in the Eternal City is an experience of a lifetime you don't want to miss!

Students attend classes at the centrally located CEA CAPA Rome Center, or with CEA CAPA’s partners, the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS) and John Cabot University. Courses at both locations are designed for students of all Italian language levels and are complementary, with business, Italian language, and social sciences taught at CEA CAPA; and politics, philosophy, and Economics taught at LUISS.

In addition to study abroad, the CEA CAPA Internships Abroad, offers you a hands-on, pre-professional experience to help you rise above the competition.

Diversity & Inclusion 💙

CEA CAPA provides, in conjunction with Diversity Abroad, Destination Guides which provide resources and tips for Black/African-American students, Latinx students, Asian American students, and all other students of color.
Through our personalized advising, CEA CAPA takes steps to understand the needs of a diversity of student identities like the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition to diversity and identity training, CEA CAPA leadership engage in continuous department level project work to identify and revise policies and practices using the appropriate Justice, Equity, Diversity or Inclusion lens as a frame to reduce bias and barriers that impact students, faculty, and staff. CEA CAPA is intentional in elevating diverse student voices and providing a platform for a broad array of identities to share their experiences abroad. The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.
CEA CAPA is willing and able to assist students with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. Students are requested to disclose disabilities through the application health forms as part of their application and in discussion with their application advisor or program manager. The earlier CEA CAPA is made aware of learning or physical disabilities the better we can work with the student, institution, and overseas team to tailor an Individualized Education Program if necessary to support the student.

Impact 🌎

Use of recycling bins in Study Center locations and in CEA CAPA housing

Signage in CEA CAPA housing urging students to limit water and electricity usage

Students are often given reusable bags and water bottles upon arrival to limit single plastic use

Students are provided with instructions for acquiring transportation passes to promote use of public transportation rather than taxis

CEA CAPA Education Abroad - Rome, Italy

Studying abroad with CEA CAPA in Rome was a wonderful experience. Prior to going abroad, I knew no one in my cohort and was very excited yet scared to be away for 5 weeks. Little did I know, that studying abroad would allow me to be more open minded and want everyone to have an experience similar to mine.

I was taking 3 of my upper division courses from my University and completing a remote externship. While it was all challenging to juggle, I managed to successful complete my courses and externship. What assisted me the most was writing down a to-do list each day and journaling. Additionally, the staff at CEA CAPA were amazing and there were so many resources available to us if we needed someone to talk to about our career goals, being homesick, or even just about living in Italy.

What I enjoyed most about studying abroad with CEA CAPA, was our excursions. They set up amazing walking tours for us in Rome, Florence, and Naples to learn more about the history of each city and get a taste of the food that is unique to each city. I also feel that our excursions were so rewarding for our hard work from being in classes all day and they just made everything flow so smooth.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did was jump off of a boat into the ocean during our campania trip on the Almafi coast. I love swimming and and going in the ocean but jumping off a boat in the middle of the ocean was not something I thought I would do. A group of us decided to book a Grotto boat tour during out 5 hour stay and it was a really fun experience and the water was very salty!

An amazing time in Rome.

If you want to study abroad in Europe, specifically Italy or Rome, then this program is great. There were several opportunities offered by CEA sign up for activities in Rome. The location of the school is great too, so you can walk around in some of the most beautiful parts of the city before or after class. We had a great experience with housing. Our apartment was in a great location and only a few minutes away from the Vatican. Rome has so much to offer which makes it a lot of fun to check off as many things as you can week after week. And if you end up going, my recommendation would be to get apertivo frequently anywhere in the city.

Pros
  • Really great housing in one of the best neighborhoods in Rome.
  • Classes with professors who could relate to living in a foreign country but also give advice on navigating Italy and Rome.
  • Endless opportunities to explore the city.
Cons
  • Sometimes it can be hard to focus on academics when there is so much to do around you.

Rome Abroad Review

Going abroad was one of my best decisions I've made during college and going abroad to Rome with CEA was an even better decision. CEA was so helpful in making the transition from the United States to Italy easy. They made a stressful and hard process very unproblematic and smooth. CEA was helpful with every step of preparation including visa, housing, etc. while we were still in the US and the second we landed they had vans to bring us to our apartments and school. They had so many opportunities and events both optional and required that were so fun and so culturally enriching. They sponsored a guided tour of the city, a Vatican dome climb, weekend excursions to different places in Italy, events where you could try local foods and drinks, and much more. Rome has such a fun and amazing night life with so many things to do, but it's still so much more than that. You can feel the amount of history and culture in every cobble stone, every conversation, and every bite of carbonara. Being paired with an Italian roommate from Rome was one of the best parts of this program. My American roommates and I became such good friends with him and his knowledge and experiences made our time there that much better. He has made plans to visit us this Spring and we are all so excited because he really became one of our best friends. If I could I would go abroad again and I would do it exactly how I did it the first time!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was when I was in Sardinia. I had eaten horse meat as a cutlet in a sandwich and let's just say I will be sticking to chicken. Even though I didn't fully love it, I was so excited to try it. My friends and I made it a priority to eat the local food every time we travelled and most of the times something seemed "weird" or unfamiliar it was actually delicious.
Pros
  • Different activities hosted by CEA made it so easy to live as a Roman and fully immerse myself in the culture.
  • Having a roommate from Rome was so great. He became one of our best friends and helped us get to know other Italians and really live as Italians do.
  • The teachers at the school are so kind, caring, and fun.
Cons
  • The classes meet once a week for three hours which allows for more free time but often times felt long.

Studying abroad in Rome through CEA CAPA was one of the best experiences in my entire life. I was fortunate enough to go abroad the spring semester of my junior year with a bunch of my friends. During my time, I travelled to over 20 cities, 12 countries, and 2 continents. Before this, I had never been to another country, so I really feel like I made the most of my time and got to explore so many different global perspectives. I learned much more than I could have in any class setting. This opportunity definitely challenged me but was so rewarding, I have memories and lessons that will last a lifetime.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did was stay in tents in the Sahara Desert in Morocco for a weekend. I got to explore the local culture, ride camels, ATV in the sand dunes, and so much more. This experience was unlike any other, and I would recommend it to anybody.
Pros
  • Support from the program
  • Good schedule
  • Lots of options for classes for many different majors

CEA CAPA Summer in Rome

My experience with CEA CAPA in Rome was life changing; I learned so much about myself from the experience and it is something I would recommend to anyone even slightly considering studying abroad. The academics were fair and the schedule allowed for lots of free time to explore the city. Living arrangements were also fair, but living in the city allowed for close proximity to all of the local attractions, restaurants, and nightlife. I would definitely recommend trying to find a roommate before getting there and sampling as much of the food as possible! I thought I loved pizza before, but now I am a total pizza snob.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make sure you do not bring a huge backpack to class- you won't need it. Pack a smaller bag for just a laptop and whatever you take notes on. Do bring a big backpack however, for weekend trips. Not too big though, because you may have to carry it around with you. And remember sunglasses!
Pros
  • food
  • schedule flexibility
  • nightlife
Cons
  • roommate situation
  • one bad professor

Rome Study Abroad

Rome is a wonderful location for a study abroad. It is filled with energy, historical landmarks, places to explore, amazing food and so much more. Rome was a clean city with many activities. I was never bored and had many adventures in Rome and Italy as a whole. Public transportation was easy to navigate which made weekend trips a breeze. My group had a small housing issue in Rome however, the staff was very understanding and assisted us in the ways they could. Most other students had wonderful housing experiences. The education was great and kept me on track through my university! Great experience!

What was your funniest moment?
Exploring the historical city was amazing!
Pros
  • Food
  • Education

Rome With CEA CAPA is Worth it!

Engineering in Rome through CEA CAPA is an amazing experience that I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in seeing a different aspect of the world than they are used to. Rome is a city that is obviously filled with thousands of years of history to an extent where you won't be able to go anywhere without seeing something that would be in a museum in the States. While the city was an awesome experience it wouldn't be logistically possible without CEA CAPA, they take care of all of the behind-the-scenes planning like finding housing and providing information whenever you need it. On top of the events, they host for students to see the city. They look after your safety and health while you get to explore a new culture.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make lots of friends! Exploring is always more fun with people you can trust and like being around.
Pros
  • History
  • Beautiful nature
  • Great staff
Cons
  • Language barrier
  • Culture shock
  • Long time away from home

Highly Recommend!

I had an amazing time abroad in Rome with CEA CAPA. I loved exploring the surrounding city with amazing friends I made along the way. During my time abroad, I went to cities like Sorrento and Florence, and even places like Nice, France and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Rome is an amazing city, and if you get the chance, definitely try to explore beyond the host city! Italy and the surrounding countries offer an awesome experience to those who are willing to explore :) Also make sure to try the local food!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't be afraid to go out of your comfort zone!
Pros
  • Food is amazing
  • Travel is very convenient (CEA offers free trips too!)
  • Meet new people
Cons
  • Eating out gets expensive
  • Very hot in the summer
