About Program

Study abroad in Rome and discover la dolce vita - the sweet life. Imagine studying art history as you gaze up at the Sistine Chapel, or learning theology just a few blocks from the Vatican. Life in the Eternal City is an experience of a lifetime you don't want to miss!

Students attend classes at the centrally located CEA CAPA Rome Center, or with CEA CAPA’s partners, the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS) and John Cabot University. Courses at both locations are designed for students of all Italian language levels and are complementary, with business, Italian language, and social sciences taught at CEA CAPA; and politics, philosophy, and Economics taught at LUISS.

In addition to study abroad, the CEA CAPA Internships Abroad, offers you a hands-on, pre-professional experience to help you rise above the competition.

Diversity & Inclusion

BIPOC Support

CEA CAPA provides, in conjunction with Diversity Abroad, Destination Guides which provide resources and tips for Black/African-American students, Latinx students, Asian American students, and all other students of color.

LGBTQIA+ Support

Through our personalized advising, CEA CAPA takes steps to understand the needs of a diversity of student identities like the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition to diversity and identity training, CEA CAPA leadership engage in continuous department level project work to identify and revise policies and practices using the appropriate Justice, Equity, Diversity or Inclusion lens as a frame to reduce bias and barriers that impact students, faculty, and staff. CEA CAPA is intentional in elevating diverse student voices and providing a platform for a broad array of identities to share their experiences abroad. The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.

Neurodivergent Support

CEA CAPA is willing and able to assist students with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. Students are requested to disclose disabilities through the application health forms as part of their application and in discussion with their application advisor or program manager. The earlier CEA CAPA is made aware of learning or physical disabilities the better we can work with the student, institution, and overseas team to tailor an Individualized Education Program if necessary to support the student.

Impact

Sustainability

CEA CAPA makes a conscious effort to create study abroad experiences that leave a positive impact on host communities. Each location implements a variety of strategies to support the local community and promote sustainability. Examples include:

Use of recycling bins in Study Center locations and in CEA CAPA housing

Signage in CEA CAPA housing urging students to limit water and electricity usage

Students are often given reusable bags and water bottles upon arrival to limit single plastic use

Students are provided with instructions for acquiring transportation passes to promote use of public transportation rather than taxis

Perfect program to study abroad with

The CEA Study Abroad program in Rome is the perfect program to study abroad through. The course's academics are credible enough to earn credits towards degrees, while not overtaking the free time students have available while in Rome. The staff of CEA are extremely kind, thoughtful, and helpful for any student who has questions and are all always looking out for each student, whether it's on the amazing program-organized trips or for daily life in the capital. Additionally, the staff made an effort to get to know each student during the trip, making it very easy for students to approach them with questions or concerns throughout the entire trip. Studying abroad with CEA gave me the best experience I could have asked for to spend the summer studying away from home.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open mind and willingness to be spontaneous. Being confident enough to just go with the flow led to some great memories while on this trip, which is all part of the fun of the whole journey.

Rome, Italy

I had a great time studying and staying in Rome. The program was a great opportunity to explore Rome and different cities including Florence and Capri during the trip as well. There were plenty of open weekends to travel on your own as well. I really enjoyed the classes I took: however, I did not like having tests and homework being pushed back a lot. I felt that everything piled up on the last week which made my trip end more stressfully. I also had some problems with housing that I do not think were resolved fast enough or even resolved at all. There was a week where we were not allowed to use one shower and bathroom at all and were only left with one bathtub for five people and it was over 90 degrees that week. Overall, the trip was good though!

What would you improve about this program?
I would improve the way housing issues are taken care of.

Great Experience!

I had a great time studying abroad with CEA in Rome. I have always wanted to study abroad and so I am truly grateful that I was able to make it a reality. I was able to meet some amazing people, eat a lot of amazing Italian food and enjoy traveling to other countries every weekend. I enjoyed the small class sizes since it made getting to know people within the program really easy. I do wish there were Italian students as well to really give that immersed, study abroad feel. The housing was great. I loved living in the Prati neighborhood. There was plenty of places to eat and great gelato on every corner. I felt safe throughout the entire experience in Rome. The staff and faculty were also incredibly friendly and helpful. Shoutout to my girl Cecilia for always having everything so organized and covered. Overall, it was a great experience that I'll never forget.

What would you improve about this program?
If I could change anything, I would like a broader course selection. It was difficult choosing classes, because a few of the classes I wanted filled up right away so I was stuck taking business electives that I don't need.

Exactly what you want in a study abroad program!

CEA Rome was incredible in all aspects; mostly due to the people. The faculty was truly unmatched. From the second I arrived at orientation, I knew I chose a great program. We were well-informed on any and all information we could ever need, and the staff made themselves available for any and all questions/concerns of students (your parents can definitely rest east sending you here). Having a small, close-knit program, they really made us feel like family as students. The neighborhood, housing, small class sizes, safety, and school activities/trips were all excellent. Rome is a big city, but this program provided a community for me that made it feel like "home". I made lifelong friends in this program and would absolutely recommend it to anyone.

Best time

Had the best time of my life. Was worried to go abroad at first but the moment I landed I was met at the airport with friendly staff from the program and transportation to my apartment. The first week was spent showing us the city and informing us about the safety and culture of Rome. We were given activities such as a group scavenger hunt throughout all of Rome in order to accustom ourselves to the city, find our way around, and see the beautiful sites. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and were always informative. We were given opportunities to participate in many group activities to see the city and immerse ourselves in the Roman culture. They also provided free trips with the program to see other Italian sites and cities together.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Seeing the Colosseum for the first time truly takes your breath away.

Eye-opening

Studying in Italy helped me to gain a broader view of the world. As a business major, it is always helpful to see what people value from different places. It was amazing to see the differences between people's interactions with one another in Rome, other places in Italy, as well as other European countries. I met some great people from different parts of the US and from the rest of Europe. It was great to study in a country that had a main language that was not English, because this made the experience seem that much more authentic. Exploring Italy was fantastic; there are so many differences between each region. My recommendation to future travelers is to soak it all in early and do not push anything off, as the program is shorter than it may seem!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
My Italian roommate introduced me to a place which sells cow tongue as a street food.

Very easy, enjoyable experience!

This program is so well conducted, and you will have an incredible time living in one of the most historically charged cities in the world. The apartments are in fantastic, central locations and you will probably never have the opportunity to live in such an incredible location for so long again. I loved having the support right from the beginning of my decision to study abroad. There was someone to help and guide you every step of the way, so I felt confident knowing everything was going to be taken care of and I could focus more on having a good time. Excursions are well organized, so you get the most out of your time in each location. The staff and professors are all wonderful, and I really had a great learning experience overall. Study abroad is a must-do experience for college and CEA is a great way to do it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of the fact that you're living in Rome! Enjoy it and don't travel too much outside of Italy or you won't do what you went abroad to do - immerse yourself in a culture and learn its intricacies.

An experience

My study abroad time in Rome was good. I can leave here being able to say I studied abroad in Rome! My classes were a bit harder than expected and attendance was strict, so I was not able to travel as much as I had hoped. Additionally, since the CEA program is relatively small and since we were not studying at an actual international university, you are limited to making and meeting friends with people within the CEA program. There were 7 of us living in my apartment, which personally I believed was too many people for the amount of amenities that were in the apartment. For example, only one of everything (fridge, washer, sink, etc.) and only 2 toilets and 2 showers. However the apartment was located extremely close to the CEA center which was very convenient. The CEA Rome staff was great. Everyone was extremely helpful and answered to your emails or in-person requests in an extremely timely manner. They were all very kind and helped made the transition to life in Italy very smooth and easy. The activities and programs they designed and developed were great fun and a great way to experience the Italian culture. Overall my study abroad experience was exactly that, an experience. I do not regret coming, however there are some things that I would change and do differently if given the opportunity.

What would you improve about this program?
Nothing is structurally wrong with the CEA Rome Program. Personally it was just not the full abroad experience I was hoping to get. I did not get to meet any Italian students in class and any friend I made was limited to also being in the CEA program. This is not CEA's fault, instead it is my own fault for not choosing a program that was through an actual university such as JCU.
