Maximo Nivel is the best

This was a huge decision for me, trying to decide what TEFL course to take. I researched this as much as I could, but in the end you just have to decide. Well I chose absolutely right with Maximo Nivel- their 150-hour TEFL course was an incredible experience, and just as they promised, they placed me in a TEFL job in Costa Rica, starting about two weeks after the course ended! I didn't have to start working this soon after the course but I wanted to. Maximo Nivel was great from the very beginning- the first person I spoke to on the phone was extremely knowledgeable and answered all my questions. You should absolutely research this choice thoroughly, as there is a real range of program quality. But I can tell you this program is absolutely top quality!

Fantastic

I enjoyed my time in the TEFL course, specifically my instructor Lewis, he made the whole course engaging, fun and memorable. I feel like I am now confident and given all the resources I need to flourish as an English teacher! I jumped off a waterfall, I seen monkeys, I had an awesome time with my roommate. My class had 9 students in it and every single one brought something awesome to the table. We shared so many laughs and have memories that will last for a lifetime. I also enjoyed our rooms which had AC.

What was your funniest moment?
We all impersonated Lewis' British accent and he then in turn impersonated our American accents... it was great.

Amazing Experience

I found this to be a very rewarding experience all around. The host family I was set up with made me feel right at home, the staff at the school were very friendly and were incredibly helpful during the rigorous course Maximo Nivel had to offer. During the course, you get to get real experience teaching the locals and meeting some amazing people during the month you stay in Quepos. The school itself was incredibly nice, it was always very clean and well-kept, and they offered constant assistance for anything you may need. The pool was a wonderful surprise coming to the schools as well. I recommend to anyone looking to further their education in a new country, to consider Maximo Nivel.

Fantastic

A great and rewarding experience with amazing staff, peers, students, and teachers. I stayed with a sweet family with children and grandchildren. My host mom was named Carmen who lived about 15 minutes walking from the institute. She was helpful, friendly, and I loved her food :). The school was comfortable with everything we may need to become a teacher. I loved coming to school every morning, drinking the coffee, and chatting with the staff. There were also lots of students taking Spanish classes who I made friends with. I had an overall great experience!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of your time! Talk to as many people as you can. The staff is friendly and so are the people in Quepos.
Pros
  • peers
  • local students
  • trainer
Cons
  • high course load (but necessary to become a better teacher)

TEFL Course Quepos, Costa Rica

I did the TEFL course in January/February 2025 and had an incredible experience! Everyone I met was so nice and helpful. Before going my advisor was really nice and informative. The location is a dream and I had a very kind host family. I was able to get hands on experience teaching to adults before finishing the course. It is an accelerated course, so you do need to be very committed to the work load. My instructor was very knowledgeable of the content, was funny, and nice to us. The classroom has AC which is a major benefit!

Rigorous, eventful journey

I was definitely pushed in a way I hadn't been pushed before. Lewis was an excellent teacher with charisma and energy I had never seen in a teacher before. He was harsh but thats ultimately how you learn the best. I really appreciated the local Ticos being so willing to learn English, they were so sweet and really motivated me to keep going.

Even though there was plenty of tears shed during these past 4 weeks. There was even more laughter and joy.

I will never forget this course, I will never forget Costa Rica, and I will never forget Maximo Nivel.

As they say here in Costa Rica, pura vida.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Definitely spend time with the locals. The best part of travel is immersing yourself in the local culture.
Pros
  • Great teacher
  • Helpful staff
  • Pool
Cons
  • Showers didn't work

Amazing experience

It’s really a great program for people who are up to trying new things, meeting interesting people, and just generally having fun.
The course is very well thought-out, anticipating 99% of the questions that might come up. The remaining 1 % is part of the fun lol.
I am very thankful to have had such a great teacher as Annabelle, she really put 200% into her work every day and made sure we felt welcomed from the moment we got there.

She is really smart, fun and energetic. I never thought I would enjoy learning so much :)

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would plan ahead more, and definitely spend MORE time in Costa Rica after the course!
Pros
  • Smooth going
  • They are super helpful
  • Great location
Cons
  • A bit expensive to live there, but worth it
  • Maybe more free food lol
  • I can’t think of anything

Well Worth It!

I took an online TEFL course (from a different company) during the pandemic, but have yet to actually teach as the course did not prepare me sufficiently (or at all). The Maximo Nivel course was well worth the rigorous schedule. I learned so much in the past month and have learned how much I truly love to teach. The practical teaching experiences were invaluable; I loved connecting with the students and seeing the "aha!" on their faces as they grasped the concepts. Costa Rica is an incredible country and the Maximo Nivel school in Quepos is no different. Everyone is incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I teach yoga, but had never taught in the front of a classroom. I was incredibly nervous during our first mini teaching lesson, but by the end of practical teaching week, I can say I absolutely love teaching.

Questions & Answers

Apart from what the others have already suggested, I would also advise that any travel you intend on doing, you are prepared to leave until you've finished or to start beforehand. Manuel Antonio is a beautiful place, and you will certainly have beach time. But don't be fooled! The classes are intensive and require outside-the-classroom prep time. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks so much for your reply. I'd love if you could connect me with them! I'm going to be studying at Maximo in January 2017 and am very keen to teach :)

I would definitely recommend a laptop. You'll need it to work on assignments and lesson plans out of class. The building can get pretty hot, so being able to relocate to cooler locations is a must. Regarding clothes, I wore decent shorts and collared shirts for the classes. For interviews, I would recommend something more business casual.

The cost of the program varies by location and what type of stay you prefer (apartment, hostel, or homestay). I have added a link to the estimated program costs below that you may find helpful. In general, the cost will be somewhere between $2000-$2500, not including your flight. http://www.maximonivel.com/tefl-tesol/prices/
