Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here. Learn more about how International Volunteer HQ - IVHQ is promoting ethical volunteering.

Best way to experience India

Choosing an organization to volunteer with it's hard, specially when the country is very different and far from yours. IVHQ was the best choice. Great staff and good projects. Travelling was also possible on the weekends which is a good point cause you get to know India too.

What would you improve about this program?
That some more money which we pay go to the projects.

My thoughts

I loved the program in general. I taught mostly deaf students, which was challenging at first, but they've taught me so much along the way. It's been one of the best decisions to volunteer in India. It was also wry easy to travel on the weekends and on our days off. The host family would always help plan and give us suggestions on locations. The culture was in vast contrast to America but it was well worth the experience.

What would you improve about this program?
Maybe working for EVAD school, have an orientation video with basic sign language (abc's and numbers)

Great experience

Loved the freedom we got to travel and expend our time when the volunteering finished. Felt really like home with my host family, great atmosphere with other volunteers and all the members of the family.

I would have liked to know that I was coming to Faridabad and not to Delhi itself. I would have also liked more communication with the teachers at school, their English is not very good and that made it more difficult when getting coordinated with them.

Slum Teaching

One of the best experiences I have had thus far! The program was a little difficult at first, mainly because of the language barrier. After a week of teaching, I began to pick up a little hindi and that was very helpful! The students in the slums are the best. They are so eager to learn. During the weekends I got to travel throughout India with friends I made during orientation. My host family was so welcoming! The locals STARE a lot and love to take pictures! ( it's almost like being a celebrity) Everywhere you go people will be staring, so get use to that! Anywho, I highly recommend this program!!! I cried on last day. The students did not want me to leave.

Teaching in Delhi

The host family I stayed with had two 13 year old boys, who loved taking me to the park and playing indian games. They also liked to play chess (and were very good). I also enjoyed taking them to the movies to watch Bollywood films.

I had lots of fun playing games with the children. They were so eager to learn english, and were very willing students. The kids were so funny, and had great attitudes.

All in all, I was very happy with my host family and my teaching experience.

IVHQ Delhi, India- Childcare

For my childcare placement I worked and stayed in an orphanage. When I got here it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but in the end I made amazing friendships with some of the children that I will never forget. I had the opportunity to teach a kindergarten class in the morning and then in the afternoon we would work with the 7th grade girls and teach them English. We also helped out in the kitchen a lot and assisted with the some of the daily duties/jobs the children had. It was really a fun time! Since we were living here we had the opportunity to spend as much time as we wanted with the children instead of just spending 3 or 4 hours at the placement and then leaving like normal volunteer projects!

You should definitely try it out! You'll love it!

IVHQ India Dehli, Childcare

Note exactly what I initially expected. I was expecting more guidance but the orphanage is more of taking initiative rather than being told. It was trying in the beginning, but got better as time went.

What would you improve about this program?
Choosing childcare, I was not expecting to teach. I would have also liked to have known prior to the schedule of the orphanage set up rather than a week prior.

Response from International Volunteer HQ - IVHQ

Hi Shanice, thanks for sharing a little from your experience on our childcare project in Delhi. As stated within our childcare project description, there is some teaching incorporated and although you weren't expecting this, it's great that you stuck at it. We have no doubt that you took away new skills from this experience. Thanks for being an IVHQer, we hope that you will join us on another program in the future.

Questions & Answers

Nope! When I was in India, our orientation group had volunteers of various ages!

It all depends how long you are staying for, while volunteering you do get meals with the families you stay with but some may not like the food and want to eat out, generally India is one of the cheapest places you can visit, if you are purely just going to volunteer and don't intend doing any other activities which is doubtful in India then you won't need much at all, if you are the type to live...

I took a look and you can find the price breakdown for both programs in India below. Hope that helps!
