Semester In Thailand

The country itself felt super safe for solo travel and there were so many places to go like Phuket, Bangkok, Krabi, Chiang Rai, etc. Travel time was long but worth it. Food was amazing, just avoid water contamination! Everything in Thailand was cheaper as well, which was helpful for budgeting. People were super friendly and patient as we tried to immerse ourselves in their culture and learn their language. Weather was consistent and honestly I got used to the humidity quickly so I didn't have any issues.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
You need to take advantage of any time off you have. Day trips and weekend trips are a must. Chiang Rai has amazing temples, a must see destination you can get to by bus. Bangkok has amazing night life and is near the zoo that keeps Moo Deng! Phuket and Krabi are beautiful and relaxing, great for long tail boat rides and snorkeling.
Pros
  • beautiful destinations and attractions
  • fooood, especially the fresh fruit
  • super affordable
Cons
  • travel time (but it gives you the excuse to travel that side of the world)
  • undrinkable water (easy to avoid due to water filters and bottled water)

CIS Abroad Thailand

While in Thailand, I completed my Political Science minor, taking courses such as Thai Foreign Policy and Fake News, Censorship, and the Politics of Truth. Studying politics, media, and governance while living under a constitutional monarchy offered a depth of understanding that no classroom at home could replicate.

Community is central to who I am, and I often associate belonging with a shared language. While I was nervous about navigating a language barrier in Thailand, I was drawn to a culture rooted in collectivism, respect, and care for others.

Through CIS Abroad, I found community across cultures and backgrounds. I am endlessly grateful to David, Ann, and Jenny, who made us feel at home, answered our questions, and reminded us that belonging can exist far from familiarity. Choosing to study abroad was not easy as a first-generation college student. That is why I am especially grateful to have had such an amazing support system through CIS Abroad.

Traveling and studying in Southeast Asia deepened my understanding of the region’s history, economics, and political climate in ways I will carry with me for the rest of my life. This experience challenged preconceived notions and reaffirmed my belief that studying abroad is not just an escape from reality, but a meaningful rite of passage.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travels on this program is to explore Salaya! Mahidol University is about an hour from central Bangkok, and although it can seem that the excitement is only in the city, there is so much to explore close to you,
Pros
  • Affordable Transportation and Food
  • Hospitable Culture
  • Safety
Cons
  • not having kitchens
  • long travel time

My Veterinary Science Semester Abroad in Thailand

My semester abroad in Thailand for veterinary science was truly unforgettable. The program was very hands-on, from labs and shadowing vets to community outreach and conservation projects. Working directly with both domestic and wildlife species under vets from different cultural backgrounds was an incredible learning experience. Traveling to Bangkok and Phuket made the semester even more special.

The kindness of the Thai people, the amazing food, and the vibrant culture made every day exciting. While some of the housing could be improved, the overall experience was fantastic. I’d recommend this program to students who thrive with hands-on learning and want to see veterinary medicine from a global perspective.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-wracking moment for me was diving in open water at a deep depth and doing a night dive. Being surrounded by darkness underwater was intimidating at first, but it ended up being one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences of my trip.
Pros
  • Hands-on learning with both domestic and wildlife species
  • Traveling to places like Bangkok and Phuket and experiencing Thai culture
  • Supportive vets and staff who made learning exciting and engaging
Cons
  • Some housing arrangements could be improved
  • Adjusting to the heat and humidity took time
  • Language barrier made communication tricky at times

Studying Abroad in Thailand

This was my first experience leaving my home country and I don't think I could have had a better experience. With the help of my program and my group of friends, I was able to have so much fun while still feeling safe and having a stable help network to rely on if I need it. The onsite program staff was very helpful for anything that me or my friends needed, as well as any questions we were concerned about as well. I definitely felt safe travelling in this country and with this program. I also think that this is a great way to start travelling to other surrounding countries in Southeast Asia!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the effort to learn the language! The locals love it when you make an effort to engage and be immersed in their culture and they love helping you and sharing their culture. I would also say, try to go to places that are less touristy, you will be able to get a much better feel of the people and society. It can be nerve wracking at first but I will forever be grateful for the experiences I had by immersing myself further into the culture.
Pros
  • Good communication with program staff
  • Making friends at my host university
  • Cultural immersion with a friendly society
Cons
  • Learning curve to get used to the way of life
  • Culture shock
  • If you aren't learning the language, it will be hard to communicate.

A Freeing 4 Months

I think that this is an experience that everyone should experience. Everyone in Thailand was so incredibly sweet and you meet so many amazing people. The culture and community is something I urge everyone to be involved in. I felt safe walking home at night, I felt accepted and cared for by the people, and I was able to make connections for my career. The program and university itself were so incredibly welcoming and provided great activities for students. Along with program trips, I was able to travel outside of the program and make my own personal experiences!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would recommend having your schedule be on set days so that you're able to freely explore and travel if you want to. Mahidol University has a very strict attendance policy, and along with being sick and other factors, you'll want to be able to space out your week.
Pros
  • Included trips
  • Inexpensive cost of living
  • Insurance
Cons
  • Strict Attendance
  • Public hospital wait times
  • Fighting for the laundry machines

CIS Abroad Thailand Experience

Studying in Thailand through CIS was truly the best decision I've ever made. Aside from all the amazing wonders of just being in Thailand, the best part of my experience was the CIS family. Having such a tight-knit, funny, and supportive group of students (and also program directors) enriched my time greatly. The friendships I made through CIS helped me learn so much more about myself and gave me the confidence to grow while abroad. My favorite trips were the ones organized by CIS (Cambodia and Chiang Mai) because we didn't have to put any work into the planning - we just got to have a blast with each other. I could go on and on about how much I treasured my time with CIS but I don't have the time for that. You're gonna have to take my word for it.

Pros
  • Meaningful cultural experiences
  • Delicious food
  • Hilarious people
Cons
  • Went by too quickly

Semester in Bangkok, Thailand

A semester in Thailand was an incredible experience. From the cultural immersion to the nearly-every-weekend travels, I learned so much and worked past challenges that led me to grow as an individual tremendously. If I had never studied abroad in Asia with a program then I am not sure if I ever would have discovered all of the countries and activities that I have after college. CIS Abroad was visibly the best program to be a part of during the semester with the planned trips and amazing staff. I would do another semester abroad if I could!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be aware of the challenges that are common with tourists. Things WILL happen but it is unstoppable and what matters is how you deal with it. Some things that happened to me that I was able to learn from were people will try and get more money out of you. When paying a bill and you need change, try and give as close to the payment as possible. Do not give your big bills here for change, just go to 7/11. Taxi drivers may try and charge you more halfway through the ride. Just stick with the original agreement and have the tourist police number handy in case the driver makes a scene which will usually only happen when nobody else is around. Use as much of the language as possible as locals will appreciate it and will be more willing to help you. Know that issues will arise and be confident you can work past them.

Questions & Answers

Hi! I took three hospitality classes while I was there (Consumer Behavior in Tourism, Tour Package Management, and Wine Studies and Wine Tourism). I didn't find these classes too difficult, and the homework load was definitely manageable (honestly, not that much at all). Some of my friends who took more business-oriented classes, such as accounting or finance, thought those classes were a bit more...
