My Program in Ubud, Bali with IVHQ

My program with IVHQ in Ubud, Bali was honestly the most amazing opportunity and experience I've ever had. Though only two weeks, I truly felt like a different person leaving the program; I gained humility, understanding and an invaluable appreciation for balinese culture, however different it may be from mine. The other volunteers as well as the amazing local staff made me feel so safe, cared for, and welcomed--I will never forget them, not to mention the kids I taught, who by the end of two weeks had a special place in my heart. I cried when we had to leave them, and again in the taxi to the airport, overwhelmed with the thought that the most amazing experience of my life was now over. Though I am back in my home country now, the things I have learned and gained from this program I will long carry with me.

What an experience!

What an incredible journey! I have volunteer with IVHQ in Bali this summer for two weeks and this has been one of the most amazing experiences in my life.

First of all, I did the turtle conservation project and fell in love with the island, the animals and the local people. The staff there is awesome and extremely supportive, always willing to help you if they can or listen and be there for you all the way.

During the 2 weeks, we worked with the turtles feeding them and cleaning them, we cleaned the beach and the streets, we made rubbish bins for the islanders... there were lots of things to do! We even try to build walls for the water bomb... and try is the word there.
But in every single activity we had so much fun and the coordinators were always there to help us.

We explored the island Nusa Penida where the project is seated and we couldn't believe the paradise it is. The views are breathtaking and the beaches astonishing, despite all the walking down the cliffs and then back up again. Be ready for a lot of sweating if you want to go to the best ones! We even went snorkelling and saw big turtles.
And the locals... always smiling and so welcoming.

Overall, I wouldn't change a single thing and I wish I could have stayed forever there!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I definetely would have spend more time on the program and on the island.

IVHQ BALI

Hello ! My name is Michelle, I'm 18 years old from Lebanon 🇱🇧
This august I volunteered for 2 weeks in Bali on the construction and renovation program and I wish I could have stayed longer. The journey radiates a feeling you can't express or accurately explain until you actually live it. IVHQ has taught me more about myself than anyone has for the past 18 years. It is a self developing experience that drags you out of your comfort zone to show you that life is all about perspectives and you get to choose how happy you want to be. I got to meet Bali not only through her tropics and beautiful sceneries, I got to meet Bali through the locals themselves. They always managed to put a smile on their face and never failed to make me feel at home. I can't wait to discover new places with IVHQ 🤩🤩

Turtle Conservation

I volunteered for 3 weeks on the turtle conservation program with IVHQ, and I can confidently say that this has been a life changing experience for me; as I have returned from the trip feeling more confident.

The introduction week was a great way to meet new people and explore Bali, from visiting the monkey temple in Ubud, to spending the day at Kuta Beach; the local team are always ready to help you get around.

The volunteer work took place on Nusa Penida where we looked after the turtles. This included cleaning their tanks, brushing them clean, and feeding them fish and crabs. Other tasks included street cleaning, beach cleaning, crab catching and trash bin making.

Accommodation at both locations were top notch, with comfortable beds and clean bathrooms. The food was lovely and catered to everyone's needs.

Overall this has been a wonderful experience and I will definitely be volunteering with IVHQ again in the future.

What was your funniest moment?
My new friends and I all dancing on a night out in Ubud - Nights to remember!

Ubud, Bali

I had the time of my life in Bali, I made a bunch of friends and I got to contribute in world a better place. I have memories that will last me a lifetime. The locals and the volunteers were so friendly, everyone was so happy I just wish I could of stayed longer. It was so peaceful to get away for the busyness of every day life. It was worth every second and I’d love to go again. I didn’t mind the hard work, the heat or working for free at the end of the day it was totally worth it! Learning to cook local foods and hand weave the daily ceremony baskets was a cool look into the lives of the locals, and getting to see the monkey forest and the sunrise hike was an amazing way the explore the island. I would definitely do it again there’s nothing like waking up oceanside on a tropical island.

What would you improve about this program?
I just wish I could stay longer I wouldn’t change a thing if I could.

Wonderful experience

My program in Bali - Ubud was an incredible experience. I spent 2 weeks on the island of Nusa Penida doing the turtle conservation project, which was so gratifying. The volunteer work itself was very well balanced with the amount of free time we were allowed; we were allocated one full day or two half days off per week, which was a great opportunity to explore the island on a bike taxi, or just lay by the beach! The local team treats you like family and by mid week you will have established some great friendships with the other volunteers and a sense of community. My programme manager, Lena, was so supportive ensuring I was comfortable and prepared before my departure as well as during the 2 weeks; the IVHQ team is always quick to respond and incredibly willing to work through any potential issues you might face. I would definitely recommend the IVHQ - Bali programme to anyone willing to volunteer abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
Perhaps offer a little more volunteer work - it almost felt we had a little too much free time!

Bali 2019

Hello, my name is Kylie I am 22 years old. As I was flying from Buffalo, New York to Denpasar, Indonesia to start my 3 weeks teaching English in Ubud I never could have predicted how much I would really learn from this experience. From the amazing cultural I got to experience first hand on a daily basis, to the 3rd graders I taught, to the people from all around the world I made forever friends with, volunteering has made a huge impact on my life. After spending 3 weeks with my students the last day was so hard to say goodbye to each and everyone of them. They’re so respectful and eager to learn it’s hard to leave them after class everyday because they want to stay and learn more. It’s amazing to see how joyful these kids are with every little thing they have. From playing on break time with a ball made from recycled paper to playing jump rope with old shreds of fabric and clothes tied together. This experience will really open up your eyes and help you realize how incredibly blessed and lucky you are. Having clean running water, more than enough food in your belly, and all the electronics and technologies we take for granted. I can say that I will definitely be volunteering again, and hopefully for longer next time! This experience really touched me, and made me look at life differently. If anyone is considering volunteering through IVHQ I would 100% recommend it. If you have any questions or concerns you’ll always get a quick helpful response. Your coordinators you’re provided with give you so much helpful advice and tips on where to go and how to get there, they help so much it’s so nice to have them there. Volunteering can help find your true self, while helping those around you. My dream of helping others and traveling has came true thanks to IVHQ Bali, Ubud teaching program. Can’t wait for my next trip!

What was your funniest moment?
On my first day we took a tour around rice terraces in our village we stayed at. I was in the front of my group of 30 or so people and fell right into a muddy deep ditch. My whole entire body was in the ditch covered in mud. It was hilarious and a little embarrassing.

IVHQ (Bali)

I decided to volunteer in Bali 3 weeks before my trip. And I was able to book and organize everything in such short noticed thanks to IVHQ.
The resources the provide are of extreme value, and makes the whole journey really stress free and enjoyable.
Plus, since they are really easy to contact, you are able to go with no doubts about where you are staying, how will you get there, and how will the trip be.
Also, not only they they allow you to visit the island by giving you the time you need, as they facilitate that for you by arranging good deals with the local community.
And finally, the amazing people that you meet along the way just make the whole journey an unforgettable time.
Definitely the platform I will use when I volunteer next year!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The kids that I taught were the most respectful and amazing ones. So full of fun and willingness to learn from us!

Questions & Answers

It depends on where you are going and how long you are staying. For Indonesia, you do not need one if you are staying less than 30 days.

In Ubud, the total fees will be at least US$1,979. You can opt to pay for more flexibility if you like too :)

IVHQ requires that all volunteers participating on the program be at least 18 years old. However, if you volunteer with a parent or guardian on the same project as you, you can go at younger than 18.
