Kindergarten & Turtle Conservation: Amazing experience!

I volunteered in Ubud, Bali for a total of 7 weeks. It was such an awesome and life-changing experience where I got to learn so much about the Balinese culture and lifestyle, but also grow so much as a person. I helped out as a kindergarten teacher for 4 weeks. Every day I would have a little lesson planned for the kids; I would handout some worksheets, play games with them and be there for their breakfast/lunch. The kids were so loving and full of energy! I loved being by their side every single day and see their beautiful smiles :) I miss my class a lot, they truly have a special place in my heart. I also volunteered on the turtle conservation program while in Bali. It was amazing to live alongside locals and help out with an environmental cause on a daily basis. At the turtle centre I got to clean turtle tanks, feed and clean the turtles and I even got to experience a turtle release while I was there. It was such an emotional experience to get to set a turtle free and bring her back to her natural habitat. On top of helping with the turtles, we also did beach and street cleaning. I would 100% recommend IVHQ and the Bali program, it was an experience I will never forget!!

What was your funniest moment?
One of the funniest moments when I was a kindergarten teacher was that one of the kids took my phone during play time. She turned on the camera and took sooooo many pictures of the kids, me and the kids and also a lot of random things! It made me laugh so much and I still have all the pictures hahaha I attached a little collage of some of them to this review.

Best two weeks of my life

First time travelling alone to another country. I'm usually an introverted person and was unsure if I would enjoy it or not. Spent two weeks in the Turtle Conservation program and wish I'd stayed longer. IVHQ does a great job at communicating with the Green Lion partner organisation and is extremely easy to use, answering questions swiftly and getting you prepared for the journey. It was a unique experience taking care of the turtles, and after a day you feel like you've known the coordinators and other volunteers for a lifetime. Planning to return next year.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would choose the one week orientation instead of the one day orientation. It sounded extremely fun and you get to see parts of ubud as organised by the Green Lion and IVHQ, wish I'd done it.

Amazing and really fulfilling

I had the best time on my volunteer trip in Bali, Ubud. The staff were really accommodating and did their best to make you feel comfortable and welcomed! The program was very relaxed and explained well, I decided not to do the orientation week but due to having some down time I was allowed to participate in some of the activities anyway!! You make friends so easily as everyone is LOVELY, and you get downtime to travel and just have a good time with the people you meet. If you’re doing this for work experience it is also excellent, you can tailor the education sessions how you like and the kids are just so wholesome and there to have a good time. I will definitely be volunteering with IVHQ in the future, thanks so much for everything that you do for us volunteers!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of your time, it is over before you know it

IVHQ Program Bali: English Teaching

I spent 9 weeks in the English Teaching Program and wished I could've stayed longer. No amount of time would have been enough, actually. You meet so many different people (volunteers, locals, children at the school, coordinators, etc.) and you visit and do so many different things. You learn about the culture in a way that's different from someone who went to Bali in the typical touristy type of way. This program allows you to completely immerse yourself in the Balinese culture; so much so, that you become part of the culture and see Bali in an unfiltered lens. And if you stay there long enough, you start to feel like you're part of Bali and that Bali is a part of you. And the only negative part is knowing that your reality is somewhere thousands of miles away from Bali, and that you'll eventually have to say goodbye (or a see you later).

What would you improve about this program?
There should be a better vetting process, particularly among the volunteers who want to participate in the English Teaching Project. IVHQ states that you must be fluent in English in order to participate in this program, but clearly, no measures were taken to ensure the fluency in each and every volunteer. I met quite a few volunteers who knew very little English and yet, they were supposed to lesson plan and teach English to kids five days a week. And it is quite unfair for the kids not to enjoy the same level of learning as those who had a fluent English speaking volunteer. One volunteer ended up teaching kids math equations because his English was so poor!

Lovina

I spent 5 weeks volunteering in a kindergarten and primary school in Lovina, Bali. This time would have to be the most memorable and rewarding 5 weeks of my life. I would consider myself well travelled person who has experienced many different cultures, but living in Lovina I was able to truly immerse myself in the local life and culture and I could not be more grateful for this opportunity. I chose to volunteer with International Volunteer HQ because it is an organisation that runs sustainable and positive projects that have been implemented for the greater good of these communities, as well as being highly affordable, which will allow me to continue travelling and hopefully do more volunteer work with them further down the track. I have met so many people from all over the world and I can truely say I’ve made friends for life. Being a tourism volunteer program, IVHQ gave me the opportunity to have an incredible balance of work and play. In my 5 weeks I got to see so much of Bali and surrounding islands as well as feeling like I was doing worthwhile work at the same time.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would make more of an effort to learn Bahasa Indonesian. Although not necessary, it made such a difference with teaching the kids when I could communicate in small sentences with them.

Amazing Experience

I took part in the turtle conservation project in Bali for 4 weeks, including the orientation week in Ubud which I would highly recommend as being a first time traveler to Asia, the activities organised for us really helped me to understand the local area and it’s people. I had the most amazing experience and had the best time making the awesome new friends, learning about the Balinese culture, exploring the beauty of island and taking part in the conservation efforts of the Green Lion Turtle Conservation Centre. Nusa Penida now feels like my second home and the Green Lion Team feel like family. The IVHQ and Green Lion team was very supportive through the whole experience and made it truly memorable. I would recommend going for a 4 week minimum to really get the best out of the project.

If I did this again, I wouldn’t make plans after the program ended. There are so many travel opportunities with people you meet on the program, and not having plans after the program would have meant I could keep travelling with the friends I made.

Experience volunteering with IVHQ

For my first solo trip, I'd decided to make it a meaningful one by volunteering with IVHQ and it has got to be one of the best decisions that I've made! From planning my trip to my arrival in Bali, everything were smooth-sailing as IVHQ would carefully list the things that I'd have to do and know prior to my trip. Although there were some skeptics about the program, after meeting the team at Green Lion, I felt reassured that it was going to be a wonderful trip and it really was!

I participated in the kindergarten program and although I would only interact with the kids for 2 hours each day, it was the highlight of my whole trip. Being able to speak bahasa is definitely an advantage as I was able to connect with the kids faster and execute the lesson in a way they could understand. The only thing I regret was that it was only for a week. It was bittersweet leaving the kids and Bali so soon but I know that I would be back again!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would definitely be more outspoken than I was the last time. The volunteers that I met were friendly and it was nice getting to know so many people from different countries. However, I am generally a shy person so I was pretty reserved most of the time. Plus, travelling alone did not make things any easier. So I definitely wish to have a different experience in my next trip and hopefully, I would create lifelong friendships!
