Medellin the big surprise

Overall I was fairly satisfied with the experience I had. My internship was in chain management. I was responsible for streamlining a production line at a factory. The most difficult part of the internship was language. Speaking no Spanish meant I was limited to who I could speak to at work. Fortunately I did find a fun day class to attend on a Wednesday. I learned a lot of Spanish vey quickly and built my confidence in communication.

The social scene was incredible as the intern group host regular activities for all their interns. The highlight was a trip to guatape dam! The scenery at the top of the dam is incredible and everyone had fun.

Over all this is a great addition to my CV and I made lots of friends who I am sure to keep in contact with. I do recommend the programme but practice your Spanish before you arrive!

What would you improve about this program?
Making sure that interns who do not speak any Spanish are suitably placed in companies that have several English speaking staff.

The Intern Group Got Me My Dream Internship

I've always loved travelling!

During my first year of university I decided to try and find an internship in the summer of my first year. If I could travel and work that would be the perfect way to increase my job prospects and have fun. The intern group provided just that. I found them through a search engine. I was so surprised to hear that they offered internships in Colombia. I've always wanted to learn Spanish and travel to Latin America, so this was ticking all the boxes for me!

I applied to the intergroup and within a few weeks had my first interview with an Investment Bank. At the end of my skype interview I was offered a place to work in Medellin for 6 weeks. The intern group kept in regular contact giving me regular information about cheap flights, language lessons and information on how to really get the best out of the experience!

When I arrived, everything was so prepared! They gave me a simcard so I had a Colombian cellphone number, a map of the city, directions to my office and even lunch!

The internship was a complete success. I still keep in contact with many of my colleagues and friends I met while in Colombia. I even met my girlfriend! 3 months after arriving home I interviewed for an internship at one of Europes most prestigious investment banks! The interviewer was so amazed by my travels we spent most of the time talking about my experience and then offered me the job. I certainly wouldn't have the internship I have now without my travel abroad! I recommend it to everyone.

Oh and I got to go paragliding for $20 too!

What would you improve about this program?
The only disappointing aspect of the programme was that I wanted to be housed only with Spanish speakers whereas I was housed with other English-speaking interns. This meant I couldn't practice as much Spanish as I wanted. There was also a language course offered but it was at University of EAFIT however it was difficult to schedule around work.

An internship to remember!

My internship with Intern Latin America was a wonderful experience. I had the opportunity to participate in the project of my dreams in the Government of Antioquia, where I was welcomed from day 1. The ILA team supported me throughout the process, from the first interview until the end of my internship. During my stay in Colombia I knew I was not alone and had people that would help me in any adverse situation. I fell in love of both Colombia and Medellin and now I decided to live in this beautiful city.

Doing an internship abroad allowed me to have a broader view of my career and the areas where I would like to develop as a professional. I highly recommend this program.

Amazing Colombia experience

In order to complete my masters' degree, I needed to take part in an internship. I chose to do it aborad, and I came across the Intern Group website. As I have always loved Latin America, I decided to apply for an internship in Colombia.

The staff was very helpful from the start. They helped me with all the administrative stuff I needed for my university. They quickly found an internship for me, at the Alcaldía de Sabaneta in the communication department.

I felt home as soon as I arrived in Colombia, thanks to both the Intern Group Staff and the kindness of the Paisas (population of Medellín). My stay started beautiful with the visit of the amazing Guatapé, one of the many activities that were organized by the Intern Group. I got to met amazing people who are now my friends, and we also organized trips by ourselves, as it is quite easy to travel in Colombia.

There is a popular expression in Colombia: "El riesgo es que te quieras quedar" (The risk is wanting to stay), which perfectly sums up my experience in this beautiful country. The people, the colours, the sounds, the smells, the feelings, the taste will forever stand out in my memory.

I think Colombia leaves no one indifferent, and that is why you should really go.

Saludos a Johanna, Adri, Monica y Paula!

What would you improve about this program?

I think the Internship placement could be improved. When I arrived the first day at my internship, apparently nobody knew I was coming. There had been a change in the head of the communication department, and my arrival had not been communicated to the new staff. So the first couples of weeks were a bit difficult, as I was a bit left aside with no work. But as I was constantly begging for work, they started to integrate me in their activities. My work consisted in assisting to events and writing sime articles for their website, in order to give a foreigner's point of view on the Sabaneta community. I am not sure many people read my articles, and to be honest I didn't really gained professional skills, but I learned a lot about how a small Colombian city worked, and my collegues were always very kind to me.

I would advise you to have a good idea of what kind of internship you would like to perform, so the Intern Group can look for one that will match your expectations.

How I became an Intern in Colombia

As an international student, the best gift I gave myself was travelling to Colombia for an internship. Interning in Colombia with The Intern Group was one of the best/crazy decision I have made in years now. Although I had some discouragement from several people not to go, plus the financial responsibility, it was worth every penny. They took care of my visa application, accommodation, and job search. With Intern group, it felt like I was a king coming home after few years away.

The work experience at Cryogas was exceptionally rewarding. I enjoyed being in an industrial/business environment while adapting to the culture and language challenge. The experience not only developed professionally but also increased my networks and cultural awareness. Massive thanks to The Intern Group for creating this opportunity for me as well as a lot of other students.

In summary, the weather, cultural events, and people were amazing. And for those who are still contemplating the decision, you have a "Chicharrón" and need to try "Bandeja paisa".

What would you improve about this program?
Organise some reunion events for your ex-interns. And don't forget some discounts tickets when you do.

Stop thinking and GO!

When I first started looking into internships for the summer, I feel as if I was playing it safe. Looking for opportunities near my house or at least in America. However, when I came across The Intern Group and then Intern Latin America, I thought when could I do this again? When I could I jump on a plane and get an experience people dream of? And that was how I decided to spend my summer working at a non-profit in Colombia.

When I arrived in Medellin, Colombia, you can say I was far beyond nervous. I had no idea what to expect, if I would meet people, what would happen if I did not like my job or my roommates. I am grateful that I loved my internship with Fundacion Juguemos en el Bosque. I am also so impressed that Intern Latin America made it such a smooth transition, I arrived and the next day I already had so much to do. Intern Latin America sets up events for all the other interns and these are the greatest thing, you meet the team, you meet interns who become friends, and you realize this experience and your time in a foreign country will be alright.

On the first day of my internship, someone from the Intern Group walked me straight to my office, introduced me to the organization. This does not happen in the real world, but having this for my first day was what I needed, it calmed my nerves knowing that I was not going to get lost, or that I would not show up and my job have no idea who I was. In my opinion, it was small things such as walking me to work, having intern events, and having a group of people who’s job is to make sure you are doing alright, and having the best possible experience you could have.

When I was first giving the information about the non-profit the intern group found for me, I was very skeptical, simply because I did not find this, I did not know what the organization stood for. Nonetheless, Intern Latin America could of not done a better job. Everything I wanted in an internship I was given. I wanted to work with the social worker and have field experiences with the kids, but I also wanted to work in the office. I wanted to enjoy my summer, but I absolutely loved it. The best thing about my summer was my job, was going to work everyday that is something I could of not asked for or expected. All thanks to the Inter Group listening to me and what I want.

Who can say that the highlight of their summer was working, or being in a foreign country for 10 weeks and surviving without your parents? After coming back from Colombia and hearing my friends say was it dangerous, what was the worst thing you saw, were you scared, did you carry pepper spray around and saying no to every negative question about Colombia is incredible. People will never consider going to Colombia because they still see it as a dangerous country, however, it is a beautiful country, a country that now has a piece of my heart, and a country I miss so dearly. So a piece of advice, jump, do it, and do it now. It will never be something you regret.

Medellin was wonderful

I had a great time in Medellin. I achieved professional objectives, getting employment on my return. The city was great, climate wonderful, the people excellent.

As a mature age intern trying to get back into IT, I was afraid that I wouldn't be getting relevant experience. But I was placed with a web startup as a programmer, and gained a lot of useful experience. I'm now back home working with a web startup in a much more senior position.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Medellin at any time. The city has a great vibe, in many ways with more similarities to an Australian city than a Latin American city.

The support from Intern Latin America was superb. For instance, I had a dental problem- they accompanied me to the dentist, even in the surgery, to ensure that we communicated properly.

I highly recommend the program, even to mature age people seeking to change career paths.

Wonderful experience in a beautiful country.

My experience working at a civil engineering firm in Medellin was wonderful! As someone who had been to the city before to visit family, it was extremely valuable to experience the city for myself as a young professional adult. The network of people I met proved invaluable to me as it allowed me to explore the city and meet people with extremely positive and inspiring ideas. The program is wonderful for anyone looking to experience a very hands on internship (especially for an engineer like myself), learn about the differences with working in an emerging economy versus a more established one, and live in a country as beautiful, culturally interesting, and rich as Colombia.

Questions & Answers

Applicants have the opportunity to complete an internship in a wide variety of different industries in Medellín. More information can be found here: https://www.theinterngroup.com/destination/internships-in-c… I am also happy to be contacted, as an alumnus of the Colombia programme, to answer further queries.

Okay perfect, thank you so much!

Language can be a hurdle. You need to go with the intent of learning Spanish as to communicate better. They really appreciate it. Time is also not as strict, I remember getting to work for 8am as this was the designated start time and I was the only person there, so that is a little bit different. Apart from that, they are very friendly and curious to learn more, so just relax and enjoy!
