During my internship in Barcelona I had a fantastic experience. The city itself is magnificently beautiful and there is no end of things to see and do. It almost feels like a perpetual vacation. The amount of students studying and traveling to Barcelona make it fairly easy to meet people. The work experience in my internship was also quite good. Adelanted helped me set-up my internship with the specific organization I was interested in. While there I had a support system via Adelante and the organization I was working with. I also had a number of exciting experiences, from meeting Spanish supreme court judges to going to campaigns with 17,000 people in attendance, to meeting delegations from Taiwan. However, on the day to day basis I do not feel as though I made much of an impact on the organization as a whole nor was I given much responsibility other than about one press release translation per week. The Catalan language was also an issue. Despite this, the overall experience of being in Barcelona the opportunities I was given during my internship absolutely made this internship worthwhile.

What would you improve about this program?

Better description of housing and rules
Better facilitation of socialization opportunities
Stronger understanding and expression of internships and responsibilites

During your 6 month Intern in Barcelona program with us, you kept in good contact and received excellent Evaluations from both domestic and Spain Adelante staff. As you know, your participating company abroad also gave you very high marks. To your points on how this program can be improved: thanks to your ongoing input, we have made sure to highlight the housing rules and policies in more than just one document, so everyone is clear prior to arrival what is expected of them. And while we do not offer Adelante sponsored social events abroad, to keep costs lower than most all other programs out there, we do make sure to provide early on a permanent, neutral space online for everyone to be in contact, if they wish to be. Lastly, internship descriptions are given in contract form about a month prior to arrival so each intern knows what to expect, however these are apt to change once the intern actually arrives and begins work based on their performance abroad. We like the analogy one of our past interns used and that is, "Adelante guarantees an open door in your desired field abroad, what you do once you walk through it is up to you". I have always wanted to travel abroad whether it was with or without a program. It was a good decision doing it with adelante because I was able to get to know Barcelona and gain experience as well. The program provided everything they said they would. The first week or two could seem hard to make friends and time did go by slow but by the third week everything went by quick. I recommend looking up free tours and paid ones of the city or pub crawls, it is a great way to meet people and stay in contact with them throughout your stay. The internship I was placed at was good and I was able to make friends with others completing their internship as well. I am definitely looking to go back to Europe in the future!

What would you improve about this program?

Although the location of the housing provided was great and easy access to the city center and other locations, the room I stayed in was really small. The program could also include more information on the city in terms of groups such as meet ups or free tours that may help others meet people in the city.

As far as information on meet-ups and such, we try to send our candidates cool links/info on things that they can do or how to meet up with people. I was placed in an incredible internship and got to be part of historic moments in Barcelona thanks to Adelante. This experience helped me realize personal and professional goals and I really grew in my five months abroad. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun, the only negative part was that it was difficult to make friends and I was on my own a lot at my internship and at home. But overall a very positive experience!

What would you improve about this program?

I think students should be better informed about their housing situations before arriving, as I didn't expect that I would be living with a landlord and we didn't end up getting along - however, Adelante was quick to move me to a much better housing situation. I also definitely think that students should be offered the chance to learn Catalan instead of or in addition to Spanish if they want because it would be very helpful in Barcelona.

My experience with Adelante Abroad was seamless. From the helpful staff and their willingness to communicate with me while abroad to my phenomenal internship placement, I could not have asked for a better company to guide me through this life changing experience.

What would you improve about this program?

If I could change one thing, it would be the housing placement. I think it's important to understand that the people you will be living with are NOT part of the Adelante team per se, and are not looking to hold your hand in any way during your stay.

What a great place to call home, even if it is only for a little while... Such a relaxed city, yet always filled by a bustling cacophony of sounds. If a coastal adjacent city filled with culture, fantastic weather are not enough to convince you of Barcelona maybe the selection of internships on offer with Adelante will.

You will not struggle to enjoy your time in Barcelona, from the internship experience for half of the day to the endless list of things to see, do and experience. Whether your preference is historical or modern, from Gaudi to Gucci, the metropolitan Barcelona truly can cater to any and all tastes. The city is filled with old and new, with the wide passage roads all the way to the pedestrianised labyrinth in the El Born district, there is always something on offer in the heart of Catalonia, just don't try and go shopping for food on a Sunday!

For me, I particularly enjoyed admiring the architecture put in place all over the city by Gaudi, and all of the gastronomic delights available to choose from. The only difficulty I have faced is trying to adjust back to life as it was now I have returned home, after three months 'como los Espanoles'!

What would you improve about this program?

I would have improved measures and procedures in place to ensure the intern will be valued and/or needed by the companies on the agent's contact list, with a pre-highlighted itinerary of scheduled work and training to be performed during the intern period. This is to determine the beneficial relationship the internship will provide for both parties so that the intern may not be left simply as a prop to enhance the company's brand image.

I absolutely fell in love with the city. That being said, being here on your own you have to be willing to jump out of your comfort zone to do certain things you've never done before, and be your own person.

Don't worry about getting lost at times, half the time the moments when I got lost were my favorite; I stumbled upon beautiful findings and encounters. You will notice how close everything is in the centre, so you can walk almost anywhere if you are willing to be on your feet all day.
If possible have your internship in the morning/day, so you have the rest of the day or night to explore and do other activities.

I went in the summer and I LOVE music, there are a lot of music festivals and events to attend during the summer months, great way to meet people.

What would you improve about this program?

My experience with the company I interned for was sub-par. I didn't quite have a definite outline on what my duties were while I was there. As well, the Adelente Representative in Barcelona could have been more involved. She did not contact me while I was there until almost two weeks after I arrived.

Adelente should be more clear if they are able to place you in the sector that you desire. I proposed for art/design or museum/gallery internship, and I got neither; instead I was placed in a company that does event planning (in a way ties in with Gallery/museum events) but I was not informed prior this may be an option. Most importantly, Adelente needs to be clear if they can place you in the sector you proposed and right away -- I was not notified until two weeks before my flight.

Other than that, it was a good program!

My time working in Barcelona taught me so many valuable experiences that can only be learned from working in a foreign country. I recommend an international internship to anybody that wants to expand their horizons and learn about another culture.

What would you improve about this program?

I think that Adelante was not clear about where I would be living right away. They told me I would not be living in a homestay but in the end I did.

Well I think my biggest problem with the trip was my housing experience. I lived with someone who promised me wifi and I think was suppose to have a cleaning service. Instead I found myself being yelled at about cleaning the house when the house was perfectly clean. I also was not provided with the wifi I was suppose to receive so I wasted a lot of money on communicating with my family. The women I lived with on top of that was like walking on egg shells. He name was Rosa C. and I would not recommend living with her. She makes your life hard and difficult. Unfortunately I speak Spanish and I could understand every rude and non understanding comment she made. Everyday after my Spanish classes I went to my internship which was a challenge at times but I was open to a new challenge. I welcomed it with open arms. I worked on various projects with a non profit organization. I wish the organization was more health related but I did acquire experience in a different area. If you want a specific experience which is more than Spanish, I would not recommend this program because the internships are not selected in a very specific fashion I dont think. I also met people when I decided to attend a international church and I thank God for my roomate. She made it easier for me to live with the crazy woman i lived with. She also failed to return on the day I was leaving to return to me my deposit. It truly was an adventure. I suggest get involved in some community activities to meet people. It was an overall painful experience and I spent way to much money. However, I learned some new things. Definitely wouldnt recommend it to anyone though because even when I asked to be moved out of my house for lack of wifi, my coordinator in Barcelona ignored me and also didnt help me in any shape or form.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know now how unhappy you were with your housing - we will not be using that housing again in future! Once the wifi was fixed we had no indication that you wished to move. There can definitely exist personality conflicts, however "walking on eggshells" is not what we want any candidate of ours to feel. Great news on the internship front - a challenge is what you are supposed to experience! And acquiring work experience in many areas, at an international level, is also the goal, so again, mission accomplished in regards to your internship in Barcelona. Good luck in all your future endeavors, and please accept our sincere apologies for not meeting your expectations on the housing part.

Why did you decide to intern abroad with Adelante in Barcelona?

Rob: I wanted to experience life in another culture whilst gaining valuable work experience that will help me professionally in the future. I chose Adelante for my work placement because they have internships in a range of different companies and industries, and everything is arranged beforehand, including accommodation. Everything was well structured and I spoke on the phone for around 2 hours with someone from Adelante, this reassured me about making my first independent trip abroad.

What made this internship experience unique and special?

Rob: Everything about the whole experience is exactly as described. The accommodation I stayed in (with a host family- a lady called Luisa) was excellent and in the heart of Barcelona. The 2-week intensive language course at the start of the programme was in a fantastic language school and this prepared me really well for the internship. It is also a chance to become accustomed to the city and meet other people from different countries, before the work placement begins. This is not provided with many other internships where you may be thrust straight into work. The internship was well located and in a good company, again as described, although it could of been more challenging.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Rob: It is definitely both a personal and professional investment in yourself. Having international work experience is a big bonus for potential employers, it can set you apart from other people for many reasons, including the strength of character it shows. The opportunity to live independently in a new culture really allows you to grow as a person and I have benefited hugely from this. I'm now working in a Spanish school, and I don't think this would of happened without Adelante! It opens so many doors, whether looking to work abroad or heading back to your home country.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering interning abroad in Barcelona?

Rob: Get involved. When you first arrive there will be things that you are not used but this is part of the experience! Be positive, embrace the culture and you will be doing things you never thought you would do in no time...Catalan people are friendly!

What is your favorite travel memory?

I took a trip down to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia – the Southern states. It was an amazing experience; from the different cultures and people, to wandering the vast landscape, and of course, tasting the many delicious foods.

Having grown up in Southern California all of my life, I got to experience a bit of culture shock that I didn’t think I would get to traveling domestically. Overall, it made a great travel memory and got me started on wanting to see more of our world.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Aside from learning how to navigate the world of social media and digital marketing better, I noticed that I have gained more knowledge in different areas of our world – areas I wouldn’t have known of otherwise.

I am also learning about the many different career fields a person can enter and the opportunities that are given to them globally.

In addition, I have become more aware of my intercultural communication skills and learned more ways on how to improve it.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Some of the best stories I have heard from return students is how they were able to leave an impact on the people they interacted with and how people left an impact on them.

From their mentors to other candidates and participants in the program, to the locals – most of our return students left their program with new and lifelong experiences they wouldn’t have had if they stayed domestically.

One of the biggest things that stood out to me was they were able to stand out later on in their career fields because of their experience abroad. That is amazing, especially in the ever globalizing world we live in.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

All of them. I’m not even kidding. Though if I have to pick one spot, I would definitely pick our newest program in Ecuador. The main reason is that I have never thought of it until I started working at Adelante.

From my research and hearing what my fellow coworkers have told me, it sounds like a beautiful place. I would love to be able to experience that.

In addition, I would love to be able to learn about marketing in different countries and it sounds like we have a pretty good marketing internship program set up in Ecuador.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

One of my favorite things about working for Adelante Abroad is the fact that it’s a small company that cares a lot about its program participants.

Every time I come into our small office, I am constantly witnessing our program directors talking to our program participants and helping them tackle more than just basic study/intern abroad issues – but sometimes also making sure that they’re doing okay.

It’s refreshing to see them making sure that the program participants are comfortable and getting everything out of their abroad experience. Makes me proud to be a part of this team.
