The first 2 weeks was great because I was meeting new people and taking the intensive Spanish course. But there was major trouble on my internship because my original got cancelled. Also, my roommate moved out so I had no one to talk to or go out with. Making me very lonely during the last half of the program. The family I stayed with is great and very lovely.

What would you improve about this program?

If your roommate leaves, bring a new one in. I was VERY lonely in Barcelona.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Although it is rare (occurs in under 5% of our placements), when a participating company abroad cancels their contract with an intern last minute the only things we can do are 1) never, ever use that company again, and 2) find our intern a replacement company as quickly as possible. We did both in this case, but it still doesn't make it any easier on you when it is happening! On top of that to have a roommate that you really get along with leave early due to a family emergency, well your time in Barcelona had a lot of speedbumps. Our program is independent, so there are no Adelante sponsored events or group outings. However, your overall rating indicates that you had a solid, international experience in Barcelona and that shows that you were able to find strength and adaptability, giving you, we hope a valuable life and work experience there. I gained so much from my three months in Barcelona with Adelante Abroad, both personally and with regards to my future. They make it much less daunting to work abroad as everything is very well organised before travel, including excellent accommodation in the centre of the city (opposite 'la Sagrada Familia!), 2 weeks intensive language lessons and a work placement. I had a great time becoming more independent and experiencing the amazing local culture...also I feel living here and making friends with locals is the best way to learn Spanish and Catalan. Weekend were spent visiting all of the amazing sights Barcelona has to offer, getting in the thick of the local food, music and culture and taking trips to Montserrat, Sitges and other parts of Catalunya. I do think the work placement could of been more challenging but it was still a great investment in my future. I really enjoyed it!!

What would you improve about this program?

I would allow interns to meet other people in the programme and share experiences.

I am the lucky Adelante scholarship winner. I am interning with Party Earth and am learning the art of taking photographs and writing reviews of and on the local social scene in Barcelona, from coffee shops to bars to clubs. I have learnt a lot about how the city works, systematically covering all of the different sections of Barcelona, making great new friends as I go along. One of my pictures was recently used in the Huffington Post!!

At the ripe age of 28 I am also doing a lot of personal growth and consider this experience invaluable. I recommend this program for anyone (especially people who think they might be too old for something like this!).

I am grateful for this amazing opportunity and can proudly say I am having the time of my life.

What would you improve about this program?

I felt that the support from the Director in Barcelona could have been better. In terms of an initiation meeting before classes/ the internship starts as well as a more extensive discussion on what is to be expected. Perhaps a follow-up meeting with the director once a month or so. But other than that I have no real criticism.

My time in Barcelona through Adelante's internship program was one of the best things I have done in my life. I grew tremendously as a person through my exposure to this new culture and exploring a city on my own. Professionally, I honed my spanish-speaking skills and was able to highlight my skills through this internship in a variety of manners. The best aspect of this experience was the overall experience of living independently abroad. The country is incredible and I started to feel like I belonged in Barcelona. After a few weeks I was able to familiarize myself with the city and everything just clicked, including public transportation, local grocers, coffee shops, and even my social life. The language school was awesome and I met a lot of really great people there. We all ended up hanging out on the weekends and evenings at neighboring towns/cities and local pubs, etc. and that is where I learned a lot of Spanish because most of them were not English speakers.

With the internships being only 4 hours a day, you really have a lot of time to explore the history and beauty of Barcelona. I plan on returning every 5 years or so. I have recommended this program to everyone I know and I am very glad I did this... Just talking about it makes me want to do it again.

The main advice I have is to make sure all of your ducks are in a row before you head to Spain. Including location of housing, school and internship. Study the local maps as well. Like I said, this is INDEPENDENT living... no one is there to tell you where to go.

Why did you decide to intern abroad with Adelante in Barcelona?

Rob: I wanted to experience life in another culture whilst gaining valuable work experience that will help me professionally in the future. I chose Adelante for my work placement because they have internships in a range of different companies and industries, and everything is arranged beforehand, including accommodation. Everything was well structured and I spoke on the phone for around 2 hours with someone from Adelante, this reassured me about making my first independent trip abroad.

What made this internship experience unique and special?

Rob: Everything about the whole experience is exactly as described. The accommodation I stayed in (with a host family- a lady called Luisa) was excellent and in the heart of Barcelona. The 2-week intensive language course at the start of the programme was in a fantastic language school and this prepared me really well for the internship. It is also a chance to become accustomed to the city and meet other people from different countries, before the work placement begins. This is not provided with many other internships where you may be thrust straight into work. The internship was well located and in a good company, again as described, although it could of been more challenging.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Rob: It is definitely both a personal and professional investment in yourself. Having international work experience is a big bonus for potential employers, it can set you apart from other people for many reasons, including the strength of character it shows. The opportunity to live independently in a new culture really allows you to grow as a person and I have benefited hugely from this. I'm now working in a Spanish school, and I don't think this would of happened without Adelante! It opens so many doors, whether looking to work abroad or heading back to your home country.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering interning abroad in Barcelona?

Rob: Get involved. When you first arrive there will be things that you are not used but this is part of the experience! Be positive, embrace the culture and you will be doing things you never thought you would do in no time...Catalan people are friendly!

What is your favorite travel memory?

I took a trip down to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia – the Southern states. It was an amazing experience; from the different cultures and people, to wandering the vast landscape, and of course, tasting the many delicious foods.

Having grown up in Southern California all of my life, I got to experience a bit of culture shock that I didn’t think I would get to traveling domestically. Overall, it made a great travel memory and got me started on wanting to see more of our world.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Aside from learning how to navigate the world of social media and digital marketing better, I noticed that I have gained more knowledge in different areas of our world – areas I wouldn’t have known of otherwise.

I am also learning about the many different career fields a person can enter and the opportunities that are given to them globally.

In addition, I have become more aware of my intercultural communication skills and learned more ways on how to improve it.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Some of the best stories I have heard from return students is how they were able to leave an impact on the people they interacted with and how people left an impact on them.

From their mentors to other candidates and participants in the program, to the locals – most of our return students left their program with new and lifelong experiences they wouldn’t have had if they stayed domestically.

One of the biggest things that stood out to me was they were able to stand out later on in their career fields because of their experience abroad. That is amazing, especially in the ever globalizing world we live in.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

All of them. I’m not even kidding. Though if I have to pick one spot, I would definitely pick our newest program in Ecuador. The main reason is that I have never thought of it until I started working at Adelante.

From my research and hearing what my fellow coworkers have told me, it sounds like a beautiful place. I would love to be able to experience that.

In addition, I would love to be able to learn about marketing in different countries and it sounds like we have a pretty good marketing internship program set up in Ecuador.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

One of my favorite things about working for Adelante Abroad is the fact that it’s a small company that cares a lot about its program participants.

Every time I come into our small office, I am constantly witnessing our program directors talking to our program participants and helping them tackle more than just basic study/intern abroad issues – but sometimes also making sure that they’re doing okay.

It’s refreshing to see them making sure that the program participants are comfortable and getting everything out of their abroad experience. Makes me proud to be a part of this team.
