Transformative Internship Experience in Madrid

In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to complete an internship in Madrid through The Intern Group, where I collaborated with the biotechnology company Solmeglas. What began as a marketing role quickly evolved into a technical commercial assistant position—an unexpected shift that became one of the most powerful growth experiences of my life.

Working directly with the CEO allowed me to gain firsthand insight into strategic operations, international sales, and technical product positioning in the biotech field. Every day brought a new challenge, and I embraced each one with curiosity and commitment. This internship not only sharpened my business acumen and technical knowledge, but also ignited a deeper passion for bridging science and strategy.

But beyond the professional, it was the personal journey that marked me most. Living abroad, navigating a new culture, building friendships from around the world, and discovering my own resilience and independence transformed me. I came back stronger, more focused, and convinced that there are no limits when you show up with courage, adaptability, and heart.

That experience didn’t just add to my resume—it shaped who I am as a professional and as a person.

What was your funniest moment?
A memorable and funny moment from my time in Madrid
One of my favorite memories was when my supervisor joined me for my birthday. I took him to a Mexican dinner, and by the end of the night he was completely enchanted by the culture, the food, and the experience. It was a lighthearted moment that reminded me how cultural exchanges and personal connections make professional experiences truly unforgettable.

My summer internship in Madrid

This summer I decided to do a 6 week internship in Madrid. I did my internship at a small company in the area of social media marketing and website design. Overall I had a very good working experience and I really enjoyed my team and co workers. My internship also was 100% on site and not remote, which I actually enjoyed. It was nice to go to work every day and to have a routine, especially when you are in a new city and don’t know so many people yet. I also had another intern with me at my office, which I enjoyed a lot. I really enjoyed Madrid as a city. I‘m from Europe and have already been in most capital cities but in my opinion Madrid is one of my favourite ones. The city is very safe, clean and beautiful and there’s a lot to do in your free time.

Pros
  • Very good working environment
  • Madrid is a beautiful city
  • Great food and night life
Cons
  • Language barrier, it would be good if you could speak some Spanish, but it is not mandatory.
  • It can get very very hot in summer time

Summer Law Internship in Madrid

I had a really good experience overall with the Intern Group program in Madrid. They did a great job matching me with a law firm that aligned with my interest in corporate and M&A work. One thing to note is that my internship was in-person, which meant a traditional nine-to-six schedule. That was totally fine for me, but it did mean I had a bit less flexibility for some social events compared to others who were remote. On the plus side, there were times when the workload lightened up a bit, and that actually let me join some activities around the city, which I appreciated.

Since I already live in Madrid, I didn’t have the same ‘new city’ experience that some other interns might have, but I can see how that would be a bonus for people coming from abroad. And having my own place was definitely a comfort, especially during the hotter months. Overall, I’d say the program is really valuable if you’re looking for a tailored internship experience and some career-specific placement.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I think I would probably consider an in person and living with the program experience as I already lived in the city where I chose to intern I kind of missed out on the whole social part of things at times and just living that summer internship experience with other people who were taking part in it as well.
Pros
  • Tailored internship
  • There's some sort of flexibility depending on who is your boss in terms of travelling and getting to know the city you're living in which is always a plus.
  • There's a very international community
Cons
  • Although I didn't live in program, I think it might be nice to know who you're living with.
  • Maybe more social experiences considering peoples work when planning them as well
  • More experiences that are covered by the actual program

Beyond the Internship: A Summer to Remember in Madrid

My time with The Intern Group in Madrid was a really valuable experience. I originally joined the program to gain professional experience, especially since it had been difficult finding internships back home. But I ended up getting much more than I expected. I met amazing people from all over the world, made lasting memories, and felt well-supported throughout the program.

Lalita and Paula were a big part of what made the experience so enjoyable. They were approachable, helpful, and made settling into Madrid feel easy. The city itself was also a huge bonus. Madrid was such a fun and vibrant place to be based in, and it made weekend trips to other parts of Spain and Europe really convenient.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Before starting the program, set a clear goal for what you hope to get out of the experience whether it’s building your resume, growing your network, or exploring a new culture. If you're doing a global internship, don’t be afraid to speak up. Communicate your interests and goals to your supervisor early on so they understand what you’re looking to learn. It’ll help you stay focused and make the most of your time, both professionally and personally.
Pros
  • Opportunity to gain professional experience in the industry of your choice
  • Great way to meet people from around the world
  • Supportive and friendly program coordinators who help you settle in
Cons
  • Some internship placements were quieter during the summer, so tasks could be limited
  • Not all accommodations had air conditioning, which made it tough during Madrid’s extreme heat
  • The program can be expensive depending on your budget

Spain internship

This year, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two months in Spain for a marketing internship and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and supported. The internship group team was absolutely amazing always kind, attentive, and ready to help with anything I needed. Their support made such a difference, especially being in a new country.

Madrid quickly felt like a second home. The city is vibrant, full of life, culture, and warmth. The people are friendly, the energy is contagious, and there’s always something to discover whether it’s a hidden café, a local market, or a late-night walk through the buzzing streets.

The internship itself exceeded my expectations. I learned so much and felt truly involved in meaningful projects. It was inspiring to be surrounded by passionate professionals, and I came out of it with not only more experience but also more confidence in my future career in marketing.

Personally, I chose to find my own housing during my stay. It helped me save a bit of money and gave me the independence I was looking for. But that’s just my personal preference many other interns stayed in the group accommodation and loved the community experience. Regardless, the organization still made sure we were all connected. They planned fun activities and trips so we could explore Spain together, meet new people, and make unforgettable memories.

If you’re thinking of doing an internship abroad do it. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me grow professionally and personally, and left me with friendships and memories I’ll cherish forever. Spain, and especially Madrid, now holds a very special place in my heart.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

Definitely recommmend

I just completed the 8-week Madrid internship experience and absolutely loved it. My internship was in marketing. I recommend it to anyone who is considering doing it. You get to experience a very different work culture than what you are used to.

The social aspect was amazing as well. All of the interns were super friendly and very welcoming, making it easy to make new friends. The intern group offers many weekend and weeknight activities for the interns, allowing everyone to
meet each other and become close.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was able to take a weekend trip to Pamplona for the annual running of the bulls and even got to run with them

  • Experience a new culture
  • Make new friends

My Experience in Madrid

My experience with the Intern Group in Madrid was amazing. I was very fortunate to have been accomodated, in an apartment as nice as the one i was provided. The Intern Group staff was always at our disposal to help us with an question or difficulty we could be experiencing. I was given an amazing company, named Adamo Robot and gained valuable Business experience from everyday interaction. All staff members were extremely friendly and i was made to feel part of the team from day one. I would recommend the Intern Group to anyone looking to gain hands-on work experience in a foreign country, guided by an excellent profesional team.

Fantastic times!

I joined the internship program for a 3 months program as an IT Internet in Delonia Software. The decision to join the Madrid Program was one of the best I could possibly take, not only because I had the opportunity in Delonia to explore a vast range of different topics and therefore make up my mind regarding the possible career choices in the IT field, but also because the Madrid program itself is extremely good! In Delonia I went on to explore different topics as penetration testing, networking as well as system administration, and all this within a very flexible work culture that allowed me to both look after my personal matters as well as investigate the different aspects of IT within Delonia. I for sure never got bored in Madrid because once the working hours are done I discovered the city offered an incredible array of events to attend. It has a vibrant community and if one is not careful it is very easy to find oneself in one event one day and the next as well! For sure it is a city that never sleeps and it is quite complementary with the work culture, which in my case was very relaxed as well. The program of visiting different cities and discover a diverse range of locations thanks to the efforts of the Intern Group team were also very useful, because I could discover places I'd never went to otherwise, because they laid outside the types of place I used to go to. Overall the experience has been so good that I decided to come back and live in Madrid. It is a great city to live in and offers a great culture to explore!

Questions & Answers

Hi Verica! Whether these internships are paid or not is down to each specific placement company! However, their international internships do tend to be unpaid.

Hiya, Living situation wasn't bad at all, your usually with other interns. When I first got there I was a bit surprised at the flat as I thought it was going to be more like a uni halls or something, but the decor is quite dark and relatively small. Also had an oven that you had to light yourself which was an experience! Haha. But you get used to it really quickly and I loved my flat by the end. I...

I was in Madrid for two months and had prepared about €1600. I did budget and because I was very careful with money at the start I had quite a bit left over towards the end. It also depends on how much you eat out because that does get quite expensive.
