About Program

Atlantis is the largest and most reputable pre-health study abroad organization for US undergraduates. What better way to gain 60+ clinical hours than in the beautiful and warm country of Spain. Not only will students be shadowing in top European hospitals with well-esteemed physicians, but students also have the opportunity to explore the rich culture that their host city has to offer.

Students will learn from and build relationships with the physicians in each specialty they rotate in and participate in excursions to enhance intercultural perspectives. This is the best way to show MD/DO/PA school admissions that you can compare and contrast different healthcare systems and apply that knowledge towards improving the care of your future patients. With alumni in 40 of the top 50 MD programs, Atlantis prepares students for a future career in healthcare.

Since summer of 2021, Atlantis has ran many safe and successful programs throughout the continuance of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shadowing in Spain with Atlantis

I loved shadowing in Spain with Atlantis. I was given the opportunity to interact with such intelligent and welcoming doctors. I felt comfortable asking any and all questions that I had, and because of this I was able to enjoy my experience within the hospital to the fullest. However Atlantis is more than the opportunities it offers within the hospital. I was also able to experience the culture of a region of the country I had never been to. The adventures I went on with my peers made for memories I will never forget.

Pros
  • Meeting doctors and students on your same track.
  • Learning about different specialties within the hospital.
  • Building your resume.

Summer Atlantis Shadowing Abroad: Calatayud, Spain

I absolutely loved my shadowing experience in Calatayud, Spain. I am a pre-PA student and shadowed in OBGYN and general surgery. I was able to observe and ask many questions regarding OBGYN procedures, and I was even able to scrub in and be present for a variety of surgeries from a partial hip replacement to hernia surgeries. It was very interesting to compare the US healthcare system to another nation. I also really enjoyed all the medical professionals I worked with, and we communicated very well because they spoke incredible English. I had a great time getting to know the different students on the trip and connected with my site manager. I would recommend Atlantis to anyone pre-health.

Pros
  • Meeting other pre-health students from around the country.
  • Able to shadow different specialties you're interested in.
  • There are more opportunities of procedures to observe than in the US

Atlantis Shadow Abroad - Calatayud, Spain

Throughout my one-week shadow abroad experience in Calatayud, Spain, I was able to shadow doctors in the Orthopedics and OBGYN specialties. I was able to stand and watch an orthopedics surgery and got to watch various ultrasounds and OBGYN procedures. I was also able to participate in group excursions and group dinners with other students on the trip. It was a wonderful experience to get to shadow doctors while also exploring other parts of the world. It was interesting to compare the healthcare systems of Spain to the healthcare in the United States.

Pros
  • Shadowing various different specialties
  • Exploring a new city and guided excursions from site leaders
  • Building a community and making friends with other pre-med students

Atlantis Program in Barcelona

This was my first time traveling to Spain, and I absolutely loved it! My group instantly bonded, and Atlantis provided both excursions and spectacular meals at restaurants around Barcelona, which had some of the best architecture I have ever seen. Our residency was also located in the heart of Barcelona! Every night, we were able to explore another part of Barcelona. This program confirmed that I want to become a physician. If you are considering traveling to Barcelona and want to shadow physicians, I highly recommend it!

Pros
  • Excursions
  • Accommodations
  • Networking

Review of Spain Study Abroad

I believe my experience in Spain was amazing. I was able to meet so many great people on the trip. I was able to connect with students like me and learn from their medical and research experiences. I was able to travel with them and make life-lasting memories. I also had amazing site managers who I learned so much from. They were able to expose me to the culture and answer any questions that I had. Apart from the traveling experience from which I got to see and experience many new things, eat good food, and learn about the country; the shadowing experience was incredible as well. The doctors who I was able to shadow were so nice and so open to teaching. They answered all of my questions and let me stand right next to the OR table. I truly believe this was the most information I was exposed to and was able to learn in a short time span. I believe the trip was planned in a really great and efficient way. I liked how Atlantis incorporated traveling and sightseeing time with shadowing hours. I also really liked how we were able to pick the specialties that we wanted to shadow. I am so grateful for my trip to Spain and hope to travel with Atlantis again and gain more shadowing hours in another country!

Pros
  • Amazing shadowing experience
  • Amazing excursions
  • Great group of people
Cons
  • Too short
  • Expensive

Atlantis in Calatayud, Spain

As someone who speaks Spanish at home, I wanted the chance to immerse myself in patient care in Spanish which is why I chose to shadow abroad in Spain. Completing this was made so easy with Atlantis and also surpassed by expectations. I got to see not only specialties I was interested in but also some I hadn't even considered such as surgery. This experience has just made me more confident that this is the career path that I want to pursue. (PS: Knowing Spanish is not required but can be helpful!)

Pros
  • Independence
  • Wide Range of Specialities

Great Professional Development

Being in Spain over the summer was an amazing experience socially (meeting locals and fellow students) as well as professionally (hands-on experience working in the field I want to pursue). I would highly recommend this opportunity for any who likes to travel and who wants to further develop their career. The program also offers a great way to network with fellow peers and industry experts. The quality of life was also quite high with amazing housing facilities, curated group outings, and meals at local restaurants!

Life changing

Atlantis has been an amazing experience. I went to Valladolid, Spain. I learned so much in my two weeks in Spain with Atlantis and got opportunities I would not have gotten where I am from until later in my schooling. I would really recommend it. The first week went slow because you are getting used to a new city and culture, but when it come to the second week it goes super fast and by the end your sad it went by so fast. I created relationships with people all over the States and even got really close to my doctors. There were sad goodbyes on the last day from everyone, the doctors, fellows, and site manager. I choose to take advantage of my time in Europe and I traveled before my fellowship and I stayed a week after. Would really recommend this experience to perspective medical students.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve racking moment was the train stations in Europe. But once you understand them they are a breeze.
