CEACAPA study abroad was amazing!!!

I loved every single day while I was studying abroad in Barcelona! CEACAPA made it such a smooth transition by helping with the visa application process, organizing pickup from the airport, placing us in housing around the city, and holding orientation meetings that helped give insight on the city so best navigate our experience. I studied in a study center with other US students which was very helpful in meeting new people to travel with. I am so thankful for all of their help and the amazing opportunity that I was given to experience new parts of the world.

My unforgettable experience with CEA Capa

My experience in Barcelona with CEA Capa was unforgettable. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I had the experience of immersing myself in a new cultures and meeting new people. I traveled to 13 different countries over my 4 months abroad, and it was incredible. I learned so much--I gained independence and learned to adapt to new and unfamiliar situations, and became more open-minded and self-reliant. I chose student housing, where I was in an apartment building with all CEA Capa students. I loved all of my roommates as well as everyone in my apartment building and we planned trips together and would always go to class together! I met friends for life, friends that I still talk to every single day! CEA Capa is helpful and supportive in times of need, and I am glad I chose a program where I felt a sense of community.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was my first day abroad. I had never travelled internationally alone before, so leaving the US and moving to Spain was very scary for me. When I landed in Barcelona, I felt clueless and anxious, but I was immediately met with CEA Capa employees who guided me through the airport and brought me to my new apartment, where I met my new roommates. I immediately clicked with my roommates and we became friends instantly!
Pros
  • Experiencing new cultures
  • Faculty/Staff/Professors
  • Sense of Community
Cons
  • Taking the metro daily
  • Expensive

Studying Abroad in Prague

Initially I was drawn to study abroad in Prague because I was interested in the architecture, the location, and its safety rating. I didn't know much about CEA CAPA when I decided on the program but I am so glad I did. The housing was awesome and the staff was so supportive and engaged whether it be in the classroom, on program trips, with healthcare assistance, and with help exploring your own interests in the city. The classes were so engaging and helped me to better connect with the city as a whole.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have signed up for the internship program. Everyone I knew that chose to do an internship had such an interesting internship that perfectly matched their interests.
Pros
  • safe and cheap
  • interesting classes
  • great housing and location
Cons
  • not many English speakers

Recommendation for the CEA CAPA Madrid Internship Program

My older sister recommended me to do a study abroad program before I graduated. She said it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She was right. I learned so much about the professional lifestyle in Spain through my internship, I was able to travel to so many places, I made some amazing friends, and I loved the things I was learning at school. Overall, I recommend this program to anyone who is a fan of a life-balance lifestyle. I strongly recommend you look at your credits, talk to your advisor, talk to your study abroad office, and talk to CEA CAPA. We are all here to help you achieve your goals.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Many students and peers I know want to study abroad, yet through these hard times it seems very expensive. However, if you investigate ways for it to be possible, it can be. CEA CAPA and many study abroad programs offer scholarships to many students. I hardly recommend you find ways to explore and learn about this world.
Pros
  • Gain professional skills through an internship experience abroad.
  • Learn the Spanish art, culture, history, geography, etc.
  • Eat amazing food and meet amazing people.
Cons
  • Expensive flight ticket.
  • The advanced Spanish classes for international students are very slow pace.
  • Be careful of pickpocketing.

Life Changing

I have been transformed by this place and studying abroad overall. I have come back with so much knowledge about differing cultures, architecture, cuisine, and more. I believe that I found who I am and who I want to be while studying abroad. It was a long 4 months but, I really got a lot of self-reflection time and motivation to grow into who I am supposed to be. I realized that I care about my friends and family, especially when forced to only communicate in a certain time frame (due to time differences) and only via telephone. I came back with an over appreciation and love for those who I surround myself with.
I was very pleased with the type of living I did: Casa de Sevilla. My host mother was the best person that I could ever ask for. I had many roommates from other places around the United States that showed me the different culture dynamics that I have within my country. I had a wonderful group of teachers who all taught me so much about the topic but also, myself. I believe that all of the second-level staff at this location were amazing; The head of this location should be more globally competent. Especially when it comes down to the United States culture due to having all United States, and majority women, students.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could go abroad again, for this long of a time period, I would change the amount of times that I left my own home-base city.
Pros
  • Got to see more of Europe overall (check countries off of my bucket list)
  • Became more self-reliant and confident in my own travel abilities
  • Became more globally competent
Cons
  • Did not see as much of my country geographically
  • Did not make as many local connections that would last longer than the program
  • Did not speak as well of Spanish & get as much sleep

Granada, Spain

My experience in Granada was incredible. Between my placement with my host family, the time spent at the Universidad de Granada, and the onsite CEA CAPA staff, I could not have had a smoother and more enjoyable time abroad. The city is the perfect size and the people were welcoming. I was blow away by the beauty of the city and how much history there was to experience. The city was extremely walkable, and if you didn't feel like walking, the public transportation was easy to navigate. Overall, I could not recommend any other city more than Granada if you are looking for the perfect study abroad location.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I am not a big fan of seafood, so anything in that realm was unfamiliar to me. I at salmon, shrimp, scallops, and muscles. While I didn't enjoy the food completely, it was fun to try new foods and surprise myself with what I liked and did not like.
Pros
  • On-site CEA CAPA staff
  • Great location

Fall 2023 in Madrid

I had an incredible time studying abroad through CEA CAPA. I especially appreciated the onsite staff that was able to help me with medical help, classes, and food recommendations around the city! I had a great time engaging in the CEA excursions which were very well organized and the cooking class with other local students. Regarding housing, we were put in an apartment in a very safe neighborhood, but I wish the other CEA kids were in the same complex, but they are scattered throughout the city. We had a couple of housing problems like our window fell off, sink was leaking, and light bulb broke, and even though they responded promptly, it took a while for them to be fixed, but expected since they told us service was going to be slow. Overall, I highly recommend this program and had an unforgettable experience.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I learned halfway through that a local favorite meal is Cocido Madrileño!
Pros
  • Easy to reach staff for any problems or help
  • Great beginning orientation to help adjust to the culture
  • Ability to travel freely on weekends
Cons
  • Slow housing service

Paris City Life!

Paris is such an amazing city, and CEA CAPA provided an excellent experience. The staff was so kind and happy to help with any questions. The program provided a lot of opportunities to get to know Paris better, taking part in relevant cultural moments. There were also excursions included in the program cost to travel around France, bringing us to the beach when the weather was nice, into wine country, and even to Belgium in the snow! The classes were engaging, and allowed students to maintain a very reasonable work-life balance and have a great study abroad experience!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising things I did was book a trip to Strasbourg one day in advance. I wanted to visit the Christmas markets before I left France, so I decided to make it happen and take a short solo trip to get some Christmas spirit!!
Pros
  • Paris has such amazing food, a lot of which you can find for very reasonable prices.
  • Museums and other attractions are almost always free (or at least discounted) for students!
  • The staff was always there to help and was incredibly supportive.
Cons
  • You kind of have to spend money to do a lot of fun things, and that can add up.
  • There were a lot of strikes, some of which impacted business hours and the metro schedule, which can be inconvenient.
  • You definitely will start to miss some things from home (friends, family, comfort zones).

I Am Because I Did

Spain was the best place I could have studied abroad. There are incredible things to do and see in Barcelona such as night clubbing, going out to eat late, and sightseeing with some of the best art in the world. Spain has many different places to visit within it that are diverse. Cadaquez, north of Barcelona was my favorite place I visited and one of the most beautiful places in the world. The local people I met treated me like family. The people are kind and know the balance of work life, and Spanish time is nothing like American time; everything is late, and that is considered on time. I want to go back there to live one day! A word of advice: try to use your Spanish as much as possible. Put yourself outside of your comfort zone and feel uncomfortable. When you use English and they try to accommodate you using English, they often feel somewhat embarrassed, and they should not be embarrassed in their own country for trying to speak your language. Speak theirs as much as you can out of courtesy. This experience changed my entire life, teaching me things about myself (strengths and weaknesses) that I would otherwise have never learned. I grew, and you will too. It's worth the money.

What would you improve about this program?
Most people in this program were from either Toulane or Cal Poly SLO, and most people came with their friends. I found that there were very few people who came abroad solo, and social groups were already pre established because of that. While I made great friends in the program with the people from other universities, there was not much diversity.
Pros
  • Spain is incredibly beautiful and there are endless areas to visit within Spain.
  • The people are kind and loving
  • Public transportation is extremely easy
Cons
  • It is hot as heck during the summertime
  • Pick pocketing is huge in Barcelona
  • Barcelona beaches are man-made, the gorgeous ones are about an hour or 2 north or south

My time in Prague

This program was absolutely life changing. The CEA CAPA staff is very helpful and the process if very straightforward. I chose to do an internship because knowing how business is run in foreign countries gives you a major leg up on everyone else searching for jobs. The great thing about CEA CAPA is that they guarantee you an Internship. You essentially tell CEA CAPA what you are studying and interested in and they go out and find the internship for you. The people I worked with were amazing and it was truly a 10/10 experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Buy the Eurail pass and use it to its maximum. Stay in hostels, meet other solo travelers. The relationships you make with people you will only meet one weekend are truly special.
Pros
  • Great housing
  • lots of freedom
  • helpful staff
Cons
  • long flight
  • czech people can seem mean but are very nice in reality
