Fall Semester in Barcelona with CEA CAPA

I just returned from my fall semester abroad in Barcelona, Spain with CEA CAPA and had a wonderful experience! All the CEA CAPA staff were super helpful when it came to everything from housing requests and classes to student support or providing restaurant recommendations. And Barcelona as a city is a dream because it has everything - beaches, mountains, cultural activates, nightlife, awesome public transportation, convenient airport, tons of dining/coffee options, beautiful weather, and so much more. I'm a big city guy and it was so much fun getting to explore different parts of Barcelona and never felt like I ran out of things to do/places to explore. Outside of classes, you have plenty of time to explore your city (and travel to other Spanish cities/other countries), and CEA CAPA will organize lots of things for you to participate in too. There were walking tours, cooking classes, overnight and day trips, museum visits, etc.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The beginning - homesickness and culture shock is real! It can be very overwhelming in the first few weeks (especially if you're like me and went into the program not knowing anyone in advance). There's lots of things you can do to begin to acclimate: say "yes" to lots of things at first to meet people/explore the city, don't be afraid to do things on your own, try building a routine with good eating/sleeping/exercise habits, check in with your loved ones when you need to, but also just get out and explore!

A Dream Come True On The Côte D'Azur

My experience with the CEA CAPA French Riviera study abroad program was truly incredible. From the moment I arrived in the bustling but quaint little town of Antibes, France just outside of Nice, I was deeply immersed in French culture and lifestyle. The area itself has much more of a local and genuine feel to it than many other popular study abroad destinations. Especially since my program ran from January to April, there were far less tourists and crowds throughout the French Riviera, which is a very popular vacation spot in the warmer months. This quieter environment made it feel like a much more personal experience, and allowed me to better enjoy the sights, sounds, food, and just general atmosphere. As someone who had never even step foot outside of the US prior, traveling to a foreign country halfway across the world where I would then live for several months was somewhat daunting. However, upon my arrival, I was greeted with warmth and welcomeness from the on-site CEA CAPA staff. They made the transition into life on the French Riviera much smoother, and provided loads of information and guidance throughout my stay. I am so thankful for my experience in this program, as I learned so much about myself and the world around me!

Pros
  • Many cities and small towns in close proximity which are great for exploring, also less than an hour train or car ride from Monaco and Italy (nearly impossible to get bored)
  • Super friendly and helpful on-site staff
  • Beautiful scenery as the French Riviera is located on the mediterranean and just south of the alps with ocean and mountain views visible from the same spot
Cons
  • French locals are notoriously rude to foreigners, although I did not encounter this too much as people in the South of France are known to be a bit nicer
  • Restaurants/food tends to be a bit on the pricier side than other destinations

Costa Rica Summer

Costa Rica was one of the most amazing and unique experiences that I have ever done. I studied abroad over the summer in 2024 and it was amazing. Overall, it was an 11 week program, a 5 week class, a 1 week break, and another 5 week class. One of the classes I took was a photography class and it was so amazing because Costa Rica has amazing wildlife and nature and it was the most beautiful thing to be able to photograph over the time that I studied there. I stayed in a Homestay while I was there, which means I was living with a family native to Costa Rica. At first, I was nervous because I did not speak much Spanish, but that is where technology came into play. I absolutely adore my Mama Tica and I cannot wait to see her again, I am still in contact with her. I also made so many friends from all over the US and I am still in contact with them as well! Overall, I highly recommend this program!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did was go bungee jumping, but it was amazing, and I would 200% do it again!
Pros
  • Amazing Culture
  • Delicious Food
  • Cool Classes
Cons
  • Away from home (but that is the same for all abroad programs)
  • Hard with language barrier at some times

Must Go Abroad With CEA!

Through the CEA CAPA internship abroad program, I developed an impeccable cultural understanding and had such a fun time. The internship I was paired with truly helped me experience what business is like outside of America and made me see Spain in a new light. Additionally, I have added value to my resume for future employers. The internship pairing was a seamless process and CEA CAPA guided me through the hard work of starting a job in a foreign country. My placement was just a short walk away from my apartment and my boss was very understanding and easy to work with. I recommend the program for the amazing experiences I had, but especially if you want to easily gain experience working abroad.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve-wracking moment, specifically during my internship, was being thrown into a job where none of my co-workers spoke well English. I hardly speak Spanish and felt bad being unable to communicate with them while on the job. They were very nice people, as many other people are in Barcelona, and were very understanding of our cultural gaps. We were able to communicate through their patience and they even let me teach them some English.
Pros
  • Plenty of Shopping
  • Spacious and Well-Equipped Apartment
  • Easy to Walk Anywhere

Cheers to a great semester!

I had a great time in London studying with CEA CAPA! It definitely changed my life in the best of ways. The staff was helpful and accommodating and the professors were truly amazing in their own respective fields but also as teachers. I enjoyed living in Kentish town, London, getting to see how locals lived their lives and interacting with others. A highlight was the great Camden market being just down the road! The daily commute to class was something I personally enjoyed, aside from the times it can unexpectedly take longer its a great time to read and maybe get some work done.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Not trying London's Indian food earlier! There are so many great spots like Borough Market.
Pros
  • Good access to public transportation
  • Very Centralized in London
  • So many Activities
Cons
  • Schedule Conflicts

Student life in Sydney

I was abroad in Sydney for 5 months starting July, leaving the warm summer back home for the winter in Australia. The first week was all about exploring the city and its views which I absolutely fell in love with (light rail and trains will be your best friends). That really made it easy to get located within the city and find stores for our weekly grocery run within walking distance, Coles and Kmart will be the most affordable stores. The student accommodation was through Scape, it was really nice as they had many fun events on different locations around the city however it had many issues regarding the fire alarm going off several times a week. I truly believe I would not have loved my time abroad if it wasn't for the friends I made in and out of school, I do definitely recommend to join a school club that interests you. Take your time enjoying the small things of the city and what it has to offer.

What was your funniest moment?
I think my funniest moment was driving on the left side of the road considering that I have been used to driving on the right side. It was really strange and could not get used to it, I should also mention that Sydney is flooded with cars so it is really hard to find parking and the people drive really fast. So whenever someone would cut me off, I would turn on my high beams for just a second instead of honking like the people in Australia tend to do. However to my disgrace, the car that I was driving not only had the driver on the right but it also had the car lights on the right, so when I turned my high beams on I actually turned on the windshield fluid and wipers. Although I learned from it that time, it happened more times than I can count.
Pros
  • Transportation is really efficient and mostly on time
  • Walkable, very diverse city, has clean public restrooms
  • Beautiful flora and fauna, feeding wallabies
Cons
  • A little more expensive than planned
  • Distances are greater, the beach is 2 hours away from the city
  • Somewhat unsafe at night

Studying Abroad as a First-generation Student

This was my first time ever going to France and did not know what to expect. CEA CAPA allowed the option of airport pickup and this was one of the best decisions. Justine greeted me at the airport where we took a bus ride back to Grenoble. I feel all the things I was nervous about, taking public transportation, guiding myself around the city, was all taken care of through CEA CAPA. Brie and Justine even showed me how to re-load my card for taking the tram to travel around the city. I feel the attention to detail to smaller aspects like this is what made me feel comfortable in an unknown place. The location of housing was also great since it was only a 5 minute walk from my University. The school that I attended was highly competitive and much stricter with their attendance policy than in the U.S.A. so just beware of that when studying abroad. Overall, I feel this program was a great fit , the city of Grenoble is medium population size and has amazing business and schools of sciences.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers is to not be afraid to get lost. Explore on your free time. Since there are many small businesses some may not be discoverable on maps. I feel going to local areas like these helped improve my French by practicing everyday conversation.
Pros
  • Long-lasting friendships
  • Great food
  • Resume Builder
Cons
  • Independent time on excursions could be longer
  • Safety
  • Some individuals in the group behavior was unconventional.

CEA CAPA London

I went abroad my first semester ever of university and I loved my experience. CEA CAPA was so supportive of me and the other students in my group. The staff planned lots of fun and free activities for students and there was always something to do. I was able to go to multiple West End shows free of charge that were planned by CEA CAPA.

The housing was great, and although it was a bit of a commute it made students feel like real Londoners. Teachers took students on multiple field trips and activities throughout London, showing students insider spots that they may have not seen otherwise. I was able to check out a lot more areas than I would have been able to do on my own. I truly can not recommend studying abroad with CEA CAPA enough.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you do study abroad with CEA CAPA, make sure to get involved in the community in some way. There are so many great things the staff plans for you to get involved in the community and it also gives you more of a college campus feel by getting to know fellow students and staff.

CEA CAPA Grenoble, France

Grenoble France was such an amazing place to study abroad because it has so much to offer. The outdoors there were so amazing to hike and run in, I also got to ski which I will never forget. The city can be seen as somewhat unsafe, but I never once felt in danger or unsafe in any way. The people there were friendly and tried to speak English with me when I was struggling. I went to UGA which was amazing the professors were so nice and the workload felt a lot less than what I was used to in the US. The food there was amazing and I honestly miss it every day of my life. This program was overall so amazing and I wish I could go back.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of the outdoors, there is so much to do outside in Grenoble and so many groups that can help you try new things. I was not much of a hiker but I hiked more there than I ever had. There are so many options too, you can hike, bike, rock climb, ski, and so many other things.

My experience in Florence with CEA CAPA

My experience with CEA CAPA in Florence, Italy was very positive overall. I chose this program because of the location, excursions, length, and opportunities and it did not disappoint despite me traveling abroad solo. Going alone turned out to be a wonderful opportunity as I constantly found myself going out of my comfort zone to meet new people, try new things, interact with the local community, and travel around Europe. I was quickly able to make friends through the orientation and classes. I would even go on some spontaneous trips with these new friends! I was able to travel and see many places in Italy as well as several other countries that I never had before. Having never left the USA before, this experience was eye opening and gave me entirely new perspectives on the world. Additionally, the food, sights, people, and culture make Florence a must see. I found the academics provided by CEA CAPA to be generally easy and interesting which made getting the most out of my time abroad easier! The volunteering opportunities provided by CEA CAPA also made my experience so fun! I volunteered at a local elementary school to help teach English to local students. It was one of my favorite aspects of the entire experience!

The only real downsides I can think of is that it can get quite expensive so definitely save your money if you're planning on studying abroad and also that in some places the technology may not be as adequate as you may be used to in other countries. For example, my laptop broke while I was abroad, and no shops were able to fix it despite it being fixable in the US. Other than that, my experience was very smooth and enjoyable and I 100% recommend everyone studies abroad at some point in their academic career!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have taken advantage of the interning opportunity. Despite having a great time, I wish I interned as well because it makes the abroad experience look even better on a resume and working in a different country is something that fascinates me.
Pros
  • Location
  • food
  • culture
Cons
  • Distance from home
  • Some technology problems
