About Program

Capital of Italy’s Tuscany region and known as “the Cradle of the Renaissance,” Florence has long been a source of inspiration for visionaries such as Galileo Galilei, Leonardo da Vinci, and Niccolò Machiavelli. It is known for the Cathedral on the Pizza del Duomo, a domed edifice engineered by Fillipo Brunelleschi, which includes an iconic bell tower rising high above the city. This once-Roman city, established by Julius Ceasar in 59 BC and steeped in history, is the present home to some the worlds top fashion designers and major wine labels.

The CEA CAPA Florence Center offers a variety of learning opportunities in English and Italian where you get to explore the city with your professors as guides.

In addition to Study Abroad programs, explore CEA CAPA Internships Abroad Florence, our dynamic program that provides hands-on, practical experience to help you rise above the competition.

The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.

Students are requested to disclose disabilities through the application health forms as part of their application and in discussion with their application advisor or program manager. The earlier CEA CAPA is made aware of learning or physical disabilities the better we can work with the student, institution, and overseas team to tailor an Individualized Education Program if necessary to support the student.

CEA CAPA Study Abroad Florence

Studying abroad in Florence through CEA CAPA was by far one of the best decisions I've ever made. I created 4 months of everlasting memories and friendships. The program was very well-organized. They provided us with great housing that was centrally located in the city center and near our school buildings. They provided us with many activities and day trips that were included with the paid tuition. The program staff was all amazing. They all genuinely cared about us students and wanted to help us not only succeed, but also make the most of our time abroad.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried tripe! It wasn't my favorite, but it's a traditional Florentine dish so I'm really glad I tried it.

The joys of interning abroad

Interning abroad in Florence was the best thing I ever did. Know that when you study abroad you will mostly be surrounded by other American students. However, when you intern you expose yourself to many of the Italian people. So many doors become open in terms of the Italian work culture, family culture and eating culture among a lot of Italians from all circles of life. So don't think twice about this, it will forever change you for the best. It is something you will carry with you and cherish forever.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you want more free time don't intern abroad, it's a full commitment but also rewarding.
Pros
  • great food
  • easy language to learn
  • easy to commute

My experience in Florence with CEA CAPA

My experience with CEA CAPA in Florence, Italy was very positive overall. I chose this program because of the location, excursions, length, and opportunities and it did not disappoint despite me traveling abroad solo. Going alone turned out to be a wonderful opportunity as I constantly found myself going out of my comfort zone to meet new people, try new things, interact with the local community, and travel around Europe. I was quickly able to make friends through the orientation and classes. I would even go on some spontaneous trips with these new friends! I was able to travel and see many places in Italy as well as several other countries that I never had before. Having never left the USA before, this experience was eye opening and gave me entirely new perspectives on the world. Additionally, the food, sights, people, and culture make Florence a must see. I found the academics provided by CEA CAPA to be generally easy and interesting which made getting the most out of my time abroad easier! The volunteering opportunities provided by CEA CAPA also made my experience so fun! I volunteered at a local elementary school to help teach English to local students. It was one of my favorite aspects of the entire experience!

The only real downsides I can think of is that it can get quite expensive so definitely save your money if you're planning on studying abroad and also that in some places the technology may not be as adequate as you may be used to in other countries. For example, my laptop broke while I was abroad, and no shops were able to fix it despite it being fixable in the US. Other than that, my experience was very smooth and enjoyable and I 100% recommend everyone studies abroad at some point in their academic career!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have taken advantage of the interning opportunity. Despite having a great time, I wish I interned as well because it makes the abroad experience look even better on a resume and working in a different country is something that fascinates me.
Pros
  • Location
  • food
  • culture
Cons
  • Distance from home
  • Some technology problems

An unforgettable semester

This past semester in Florence was the best few months of my life! I got to travel all around Europe and made the most incredible memories with my friends and family. Studying abroad taught me a lot about myself, and I learned how to be more independent when I traveled and experienced everything in Florence. I also had amazing travels within Italy to beautiful places like Venice, Rome, and Cinque Terre. The courses CEA offered also enriched my experience, and I got to take a fashion marketing and merchandising class which was so interesting to learn about in a fashion-centric city.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would say to take as many trips as you can! Even if it involves solo-traveling, every trip is worth the risk of the unknown because of the amazing sights and experiences European countries have to offer!
Pros
  • Traveling
  • Meeting new friends
  • Fun classes/opportunities
Cons
  • Homesickness

My Florence Experience

My experience in Florence, Italy, with CEA CAPA was fantastic. It was particularly special because of the amazing community that was built into the program. There were so many amazing opportunities to get involved and so many great dinners offered by CEA. Additionally, the day trips offered were so amazing; I went to Siena and loved it. My favorite part of the entire program was being involved on the soccer team where I was able to meet a new group of people and compete against other study abroad programs.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Almost missing multiple flights - running really fast is how I solved the issue.
Pros
  • Great Housing
  • Help getting a visa
Cons
  • Not enough time!

The Magic of Florence

Studying abroad in Florence, Italy was an incredibly amazing experience. Italy offered me so many insights into who I am and challenged me to explore new things, travel, and expand my world. Florence was the most amazing location to study abroad, with its unique culture, close-knit community, and small-city vibes. Living in Florence for four months taught me to appreciate the little things in life, and I will forever think about my time abroad. I am incredibly grateful for the people I met abroad too, and have come back to school with some of my closest friends who have shared such unique experiences with me. Together, we tried new foods, socialized with endless amounts of people, learned a new language, traveled the world, and created a life together in a foreign country.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Almost raw Florentine steak!

Studying Art Abroad

Studying abroad in Florence was a life-changing experience for me. I am a junior at Cal Poly SLO studying graphic communication and minoring in studio art and Chinese. Because of my studio art minor, I chose to do a CEA CAPA and SRISA art split program to take classes at both schools in Florence. I took Beginning Italian and Intro to Contemporary Cinema with CEA CAPA and Beginning Painting and Graphic Design Studio with SRISA. Learning about art and the Italian language while abroad heightened my experience in Florence. I had a unique and immersive experience in the city, gaining a new perspective on Italian culture and the city's history and art. Thanks to CEA CAPA, I got a rounded abroad experience with things such as excursions broadening my experience with the country of Italy, and classes I took in Florence, broadening my perspective of Italian lifestyle and history. The faculty on-site for CEA CAPA were helpful and attentive, and my housing situation was in the middle of the city. I made new friends through the program's various activities and met my roommates through CEA CAPA's housing portal. I would recommend this program to anyone who appreciates history, art, and Italian cuisine. The city of Florence is full of these things and more, and CEA CAPA's program enabled me to enjoy these qualities with little stress.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I were to go abroad again, I would work on having goals before going abroad. Initially, I was overwhelmed by the experience I wanted to have abroad, but if I had decided I wanted to use that experience to learn more, make new friends, travel more, etc. I would have had a bit more of a focused abroad experience and be able to delve into one area specifically.
Pros
  • Self Growth
  • Immersion into city's culture
  • Increased knowledge of Italian history
Cons
  • Taking care of mental health
  • Finding time to work on school work

Florence and the best time of my life.

Studying abroad in Florence in the fall of 2024 was the best experience I could have asked for. I learned so much about myself and skills that I did not know I had. I loved living in the city and having such a sense of home in a foreign country. I traveled easily every weekend and got to see and experience the world in a way I didn't know was going to be possible for me. Finally, the food in Florence was the best I had in the four months abroad. I still miss the weekly and daily traditions I had for myself in the city.
