Milan Internship

I really enjoyed my internship here in Milan. I came in here with little expectations because I knew that Italy being the fashion capital I would probably not get a big named company. But instead I ended up working with a big fashion company with great coworkers. I was given more and more responsibility as time went on and now I feel confident that I will have a lot to offer in my next internship. My tasks included help selling during the buying season, preparing contracts for buyers, inputting orders, all things I will very much need in my future internships/jobs. This internship was exactly what I hope to work in after graduation so I feel that it more than prepared me for the fashion industry along with a new perspective on a different culture. I feel that I will be able to work well in any environment because coming to Milan I really stepped outside of my comfort zone and only excelled. I had two bosses who both have played a big part in my experience because they both were like a mentor to me and I plan to keep in touch with them when I leave.

What would you improve about this program?
I think the classes in Florence for the first 2 weeks should be more language based. I was not prepared well to speak Italian language. Luckily my company spoke enough English but knowing more Italian would have helped getting around in Italy easier and communicating more at my work place. I also think the program falsely advertises the living accomodation in Milan. Centralized living is considered to be in the main city part. No one I ever spoke to in Milan was familiar with Turro and if they were, they would always comment on how far it was, which it is. It was hard to enjoy going out and exploring the city when you would have to pay an expensive taxi fare to get home because the metro was closed. I also think the actual accomodation was not fit for students in general. The wifi barely worked if it ever did, elevators would stop working on a daily basis, there would be more than a few days in the entire time here with no hot water, and I experienced 2 leaks in my room, as well as a broken mini fridge. The staff also was not very kind. I just feel like for my living accomodation I did not get my money's worth and it definitely altered my overall experience in Milan because it is what I had to call home for 2 months.

A summer in rome

Biggest difficulty was the language barrier with staff and locals. Other than that the city is beautiful and a great place to learn on your own. Most of the days are spend packed with different activities.

Best study abroad!

AIFS has a super helpful staff who prepare you fully pre-departure, offer a variety of excursions and trips around not only Rome but all of Italy and answer any questions you have. The majority of the classes provided go to on-site visits for lectures so you really get the full experience.

What would you improve about this program?
Apartments are spread throughout the city which can be tricky meeting up with others, but also shows you a diverse style of living.

Globe Trotting

My overall experience was invaluable. The program I felt was well organized and it was nice to have Eleonora and Anna at hand for any questions. I found my internship to be a perfect fit for me. Everyone in the office was incredibly nice and welcoming and never had a problem with me asking questions. It was exactly what I was looking for when I initially chose to work in a showroom. The housing was near the metro and just a few stops away from my internship and the city center. The trips that were planned through the program were amazing fun, my favorite was Venice 100%. It was great because Eleonora took us to some amazing cities in Northern Italy and we had a great time with her. I would absolutely recommend this internship opportunity to anyone considering doing the program!

What would you improve about this program?
The housing was not ideal. Prefer to have had a shared appartment.

Want a great experience?

Studying abroad through AIFS was honestly one of the best decisions I ever made. I lived in downtown Florence, Italy right around the corner from the Duomo, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Ponte Vecchio bridge! It was right in the center of EVERYTHING! I compared it to New York City it was like living in "Time Square". Beyond the amazing apartment, the classes were spectacular! Art History was amazing because instead of reading about art work out of a text book we were right in front of the real thing! It was like having your own personal tour guild. In addition the staff is extremely fun and helpful with whatever you need! They really care about each student and their experience abroad. I was not disappointed with the extra activities AIFS put together. Some of those included: cooking classes, wine tasting, a pizza making class, field trips, olive oil tasting, an Opera show, a Halloween party, welcome dinner, and so much more! This program is completely affordable coming from a girl who did it on her own! I was 19 working a minimum wage job back at home and got myself to Italy! You would not regret taking the adventure abroad through AIFS, it is an experience I will never forget!

What would you improve about this program?
If I could change one thing about the program it would be the fact that our water heater didn't work very often so cold showers were a pretty normal occurrence!

Get an edge in life

I have learned a lot from this experience, from work to school, to culture and myself.
Since it was the first time for me travelling this far, I learned how to be independent (getting my own groceries, making my own budget, organizing travels outside the program, getting along with different people from around the world) and to embrace a whole different culture, to the level that I'm really happy to say that I've made Italy a big part of my life now.

I could have gotten here just because, but I'm glad I did it with Global Experiences, because I don't think I could have learned this much this quick from just being here, it's always better to do things with a purpose and to have, at least, an idea of what you want to do.

What would you improve about this program?
The roommates situations, sometimes it's better to know who has potential to share 3 months of their lives together :)

Time of my life

Studying in Florence was hands down the best decision I've made in my life. For 3 months I lived and worked in one of the most culturally stimulating and beautiful cities in the world. My initial internship placement didn't work out, but the Florence GE staff was so helpful and accommodating in quickly helping to resolve that issue. Interning at the Florence Newspaper was a great experience that got me involved in various events throughout the city and made it feel more like home with every assignment. From morning cappuccino in a side street "bar" to wine at sunset in Piazzale Michelangelo...I loved every minute of it and can't imagine not having had that experience. If you're considering studying in Florence, I have only piece of advice for you: GO!!! :)

What would you improve about this program?
I would have language classes extended through the entire program, not just the first month.

No Better Way to Spend Your Summer

I had the opportunity to be part of the Global Experiences program in Florence this past summer. My experience with the program went well beyond my expectations.
I greatly improved my Italian language skills at the language school. The professors are incredibly helpful and there are students from all over the world, so not only will you make friends with your fellow Global Interns, but you have the chance to become friends with students from other countries as well.
After the three weeks of the language school, I had an awesome, one-of-a-kind legal internship where I was able to experience the Italian civil legal system, work with international business contracts, write and prepare legal documents, and get client interaction. Best of all, I developed close connections with my supervisor and co-workers that made going to the internship great everyday.
The staff was very kind and helpful, the trips were fun and exciting, my housing was conveniently located, and the other students in the program were awesome people. Your transition to living in Florence will be easy and effortless thanks to the support you will be surrounded by.
I really have no complaints from this summer. It was an unforgettable experience that has no comparison. I wish I was still working there!

What would you improve about this program?
I know that some students did not have as great of a work experience as I did. This could have been due to a language barrier. I think that maybe there should be more language preparation for interns who have little to no Italian language skills. Also, it is important that if the intern is having a difficult time the internship, that he/she talk with the support staff. They can help you with any problems that may come up at work!
