I would do it all over again

Overall, my experience was great! The Italian language course was a good start to the program. Don't expect to be proficient but you'll learn a lot of the basics. Although the class was only about 3-4 weeks long, I made incredible friends that I continued to spend time with throughout my stay in Florence. All of us "GE kids" (the nickname given to us from our classmates/friends) got along well and became good friends. And the trips we took together as part of the GE program were always fun. Do not miss out on those trips! As far as my internship placement goes, personally I had a few ups and downs in the beginning. My first placement did not work out so well (language barrier). So I switched and my new placement turned out to be better and I enjoyed it far more. But don't let that scare you, it is rare to switch placements!!!! There's more to the story for why I switched so don't hesitate about joining GE. They were helpful in setting me up at my new placement. I interned at a printmaking studio/gallery that related to my college degree and I enjoyed the working environment. I learned a lot of new techniques with the printmaking medium and it was enriching. In the end, any new experience is what you make of it!

Great Program in an Awesome City

My experience in Florence through Global Experiences was great. I had never left the country before this trip and was a bit nervous as expected. GE was really helpful in not only preparing me, but in placing me with my employer and providing on-the-ground assistance. I was matched with a student travel agency where I was a communications intern. GE was great with preparing me for my interview. I got to experience real life office environment, the flow of communication between employees, overcoming challenging tasks and the overall camaraderie of a workplace. Aside from all of this was the intimidating language barrier and cultural differences. I definitely came back to the states more confident in my abilities. Another cool thing about GE were the trips included in the program cost. We saw some beautiful regions of Italy. I also made some great friends from the housing GE provided. We all spent a lot of time together in class, exploring the city and museums , checking out nightlife, the awesome culinary scene and just relaxing after work. I really had an unforgettable experience in Florence.

What would you improve about this program?
It took a while for me to get placed with my employer once I arrived in Europe. The match was fine, it was just a bit of a waiting game.

Nice staff

I really like Eleonora who is one of the staffs in Milan, and she organizes trips for us to travel around. She has been really helpful! Whenever we need help, she's there and I can tell she tries her best to satisfy our needs and help us get through problems.

What would you improve about this program?
I hope there will be more trips going to different places or even countries like Swizterland because it's near Milan

life changing experience

I very much enjoyed my experience in Milan; there were however some ups and downs, as expected! The support I had from my representative in Milan was excellent. I initially struggled with the Italian language classes as the teachers did not speak any English during the lessons; this meant I did not enjoy the lessons for the first couple of weeks. I did also have some issues with my housing situation- this was advertised as a flat share, however on my arrival the landlord herself actually lived there also which was more like a home stay; there were times when I didn't feel very comfortable where I lived, due to this I had to speak with the school about moving accommodation. The organised events were good and allowed me to visit more of Italy which I thoroughly enjoyed.

What would you improve about this program?
I feel I would have benefited from being more involved and having more responsibility at my work placement; I think due to not being able to speak Italian the opportunities were limited.

Response from Global Experiences

We're glad you had a good experience overall! While the majority of our placements in Milan are in English, we encourage that interns familiarize themselves with some of the Italian basics they learn in their language classes.
Your 24/7 support location staff can also assist and encourage you in requesting more work from your supervisor in order to feel you have more tasks and responsibilities at your internship! With the included language classes we hope that students are able to get comfortable, and we ensure we match everyone up with an employer that fits their language level. We now have centralized student housing in flats throughout the city for everyone moving forward as well!

A Worthwhile Experience

My time in Florence was one of the best times of my life. While it was there, at times it was hard to see how amazing it was because I was preoccupied with worrying about things happening back home. But in the end, I realized how incredible the experience really was. Living in the city and experiencing the Italian way of life was something that most people never get to do, and something I will probably never get to do again. I discovered some of my favorite foods and restaurants during my time abroad, and made some lifelong friends who I shared unrepeatable experiences with.

What would you improve about this program?
Some of the classes felt a little like a waste of time. They were incredibly easy, which is maybe expected for a study abroad program, but I felt like the teachers could have put more stock in what they were teaching. The Italian language class was the only class I really felt like I learned something valuable from.

Fun,Challenging, Exciting and Life Changing

When I first became part of GE's 3-month internship program in Florence, I was not sure what to expect. Of course I was excited, scared and unsure of my future.... however, when I arrived I knew I chose the right path. My apartment was right in the center of town with roommates from around the world (who were all in the same boat as I was). My internship was so great that I even returned and worked for the company a few years later. Who would have thought I could do event planning overseas! Before heading to Florence I never would have expected to call a foreign country home. Don't miss this chance. With the support of the GE staff you can have a fun stress free experience you will not regret!

The best 4 months of my 23 years of life

Studying abroad in Florence, Italy with AIFS remains one of the best decisions I have ever made. My only regret is that I didn't stay there for a year! Right from the start, AIFS made everything so easy. They took care of all my travel arrangements and were readily available to answer any questions that I had. This type of care continued throughout my stay in Italy. The staff at AIFS was a wonderful resource for learning about the Italian culture. There were always fun activities planned for students, from wine tasting and cooking classes to trips to Rome and Venice for Carnivale. In addition to the cultural activities, the required Italian language classes were a HUGE help when it came to communicating with locals and forming international friendships. Aside from the comprehensive nature of AIFS, I chose Florence because I wanted a location that had all the beauty, excitement and culture of a big city, but the charm and warmth of a small Italian village. In my experience, Italians were a very generous, welcoming people who were always willing to help you--even when you were stumbling through their language! There was always something exciting to do in Florence: hiking up to Piazza Michaelangelo to watch the Sunset, dancing to a Beatles tribute band at Bee Bop, savoring gelato on the Ponte Vecchio, exploring the beautiful Boboli Gardens, admiring Michaelangelo's David, enjoying 3 hour long dinners with friends, cheering on the local soccer team Fiorentina, or simply wandering around the city. While abroad, I made lasting friendships with both students and locals. I still consider my host mother Bruna to be my adopted grandma! It was these relationships, combined with the enchanting Italian culture and the organization of AIFS that made my sophomore year of college an exrtaordinary one. I left Florence a much stronger, wiser, courageous, open minded, ambitious and adventurous young woman. I think about my experience abroad almost daily, and it brings a smile to my face everytime.
