Preparation for my teaching job at ESS

I began working as a substitute teacher with ESS, covering a wide range of schools and grade levels within Richardson ISD. Although my role was not specifically focused on teaching English as a Second Language, I was regularly responsible for teaching English, as well as a variety of other subjects, to students from diverse backgrounds and age groups.

Enrolling in the TEFL course proved to be an excellent decision and greatly enhanced my effectiveness as an educator. The course provided me with a strong foundation in lesson planning, classroom management, teaching methodologies, and student engagement strategies. These skills were immediately transferable to my work as a substitute teacher and helped me feel more confident and prepared when entering different classroom environments.

One of the most valuable aspects of the course was learning how to support students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In many of the classrooms where I worked, I encountered students from South America and other parts of the world. The TEFL training helped me develop a better understanding of cultural differences, communication styles, and the challenges that multilingual learners may face in the classroom. As a result, I was able to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

The course also taught me how to adapt lessons to meet different learning needs, use effective questioning techniques, and manage classrooms with confidence and professionalism. These skills have been invaluable when teaching students across multiple grade levels and subject areas.

Overall, I am extremely grateful for the knowledge and experience I gained through the TEFL course. It has provided me with practical teaching tools, strengthened my classroom management abilities, and deepened my understanding of effective teaching practices. Most importantly, it has given me a solid foundation in educational approaches and methodologies that I continue to apply in my daily work as an educator.

What would you improve about this program?
While I found the TEFL program extremely valuable and beneficial, there are a few areas where it could be further improved.

One suggestion would be to allow former students continued access to the course notes and learning materials after graduation. Having access to these resources would provide an excellent reference tool for graduates as they begin teaching and encounter new classroom situations. Being able to revisit key concepts, methodologies, and lesson-planning guidance would help reinforce learning and support ongoing professional development.

I would also appreciate more practical written preparation activities focused on real classroom scenarios. The first two assignments were particularly helpful because they encouraged me to think through authentic teaching situations and apply what I had learned. Expanding this type of task throughout the course would give students additional opportunities to develop confidence in lesson planning, classroom management, student engagement, and adapting lessons for different age groups and learning needs.

Overall, the program provides a strong foundation in teaching theory and practice. These additions would make it even more useful for new teachers transitioning into real classroom environments
Pros
  • . Strong foundation in teaching methods and classroom management.
  • Practical assignments that prepare students for real teaching situations.
  • Flexible online format that allows students to study at their own pace.
Cons
  • Course materials are not accessible after graduation.
  • Some course segments are too lengthy and could be more concise.
  • I found the first two assignments more useful because they focused on real classroom preparation. I would have preferred more assignments of that type rather than the third assignment, which focused mainly on answering comprehension questions.

AMAZING PROGRAM!

I must say, when I enrolled in this program I didn't know what to expect. As I worked through the program I learned so much on "how" to teach English. With English being my first language I never thought about "how" it all is put together and taught. I am glad that I expanded my knowledge and even more excited for the future. In less than a week from completing my certificate I had an interview and I am in the final stages for hiring. The information is robust, relevant and truly helps prepare you to teach. I have recommended this program over and over again to all I know. Receiving my TEFL Diploma has open up a new chapter in my life. ------- Thank you!

What would you improve about this program?
I think the program could use a check-in with an actual person at TEFL to compound on the learning. The quiz and test were great for retention after the units. But having a live person connect with you to evaluate would be a great touch.
Pros
  • You Tube Videos
  • Support
  • Flow of Units
Cons
  • No in person check-in/session

Path to the success

TEFL helped me to activate my dream. One day I dreamt of being a teacher. Time passed, and I couldn’t try for my dream because I had to engage in my two baby works.
Now they are young people. They won their goals by learning hard with me.
You TEFL, I highly respect you for encouraging and giving me the path to win my dream of teaching.
TEFL taught me English very well. I did it within five months.
If there were no TEFL, there couldn’t be good teachers in the world.
If you can add more spoken lessons, it will be very valuable to us.
I highly respect you, and thank you TEFL.

Thanks, TEFL, for the career rebirth burpees

At 52 and post-retrenchment, I'm finding myself having to do a big career gear-change in life.
Yes, retrenchment can be pretty damn terrifying, but you can also see it as the universe delivering a much-needed kick in the backside to get you out of a comfort zone that, in hindsight, wasn't all that comfortable.
It's good to have a bit of a stretch when you've been mouldering behind a computer screen doing the same thing for 30 years - and I've found the TEFL Academy programme has done a masterful job of putting me through some career-rebirth burpees for the past six months. Yes, there's been plenty of gear grinding and rapidly elicited expletives along the way, but, hey, "no pain, no gain".
Just like a good run or gym workout gets the endorphins pumping, this course has fired up some neurons that have been parking off in serious couch-potato mode since my school days. And that has felt Eina!!!! But then also... Fantastic!!!!!
A big win for the course has been the responsive, friendly and very helpful student support. That's vital if you're doing training online. So a big thank you to Phillicia Bekker, Bianca Stellenberg, Pranisha Govender and Charnelle Frazer for patiently and expertly handling all my queries no matter how mundane and to Ashleigh D, Brigid S, and Claire H for their useful feedback that helped me to get the most out of the assignments.
The instructional videos did a great job of showing the theory's practical application and navigating the assignments. Mairead O' Connor is a super star teacher whose passion for the profession shines through with each succinctly crafted explanation. She has such a calm, reassuring demeanour that I'm sure she could get a horde of rabid zombies working in pairs and producing the first conditional with little more than her lyrical Irish brogue, a gap-fill worksheet and some crayons.
My course also included a classroom session run by TEFL trainer Luan Dreyden, which I feel was the highlight of the entire programme. Luan took the 10 units of theory content that I'd been wrestling with for the past 6 months and distilled them into a witblits 10-hour one-shot without so much as a single "erm", "um" or "ah". This was an expert at work, and before the day was done, she had me and about 20 other quietly terrified (well, at least I was) TEFL newbies delivering our first lesson in a very engaging yet supportive environment. This one session alone was worth the entire price of admission to the course. The 10-units of theory built the engine. Luan installed the spark plug.
I realise my TEFL "engine" is nowhere near Luan's Ferrari V-12, but thanks to this programme, it will get me out the garage (grinding gears and all) and onto the road to new possibilities, a new me. And for that I'm very grateful to everyone I have met on my TEFL journey so far.

TEFL Level 5 online course

This course is highly recommended, not only for possible career opportunities. This course taught me beyond just training how to teach, it broadens one's perspective on people, culture and how language influences community and one's self-esteem. I met many lovely peers aswell. We built a healthy amazing community. The in-person lecture was my highlight of this course, it was very informative on every topic of education, teaching and job searching. It also heightened many skills, like time management, communication, confidence, and socialisation.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
SO I went ziplining for the first time at Zwartkop. It was VERY high up and the guts to sit down and lift your feet to start sliding was horrifying...The group I went with was also terrified and their cheers and faces from the next platform made me want to experience this thrill aswell. Outcome: It was one of the best experiences I've had of my life, it was beautiful, fun and a core memory. How did I overcome it? YOLO (You only live once) and this life is temporary, while everlasting life is amazing, so do crazy stuff, as Namjoon said once - "Life is fun." Go make crazy memories.
Pros
  • Experience
  • Stories to share
  • Core fun memories
Cons
  • Time consuming

A Comprehensive, Confidence-Building TEFL Journey

Studying with The TEFL Academy has been a transformative experience. The course was well-structured, balancing theory with practical application, and provided clear and interesting materials that were easy to follow. I appreciated how the program integrated modern tools and teaching trends, including AI, which made the training feel relevant to today's classrooms.

The course certainly gave me confidence to teach English online and the practical resources will help me start building my own TEFL business. The focus on professionalism, student engagement, and entrepreneurship set it apart from other programs I considered.

I would highly recommend The TEFL Academy to anyone serious about teaching English, whether freelancing, working with platforms, or starting their business. It's a foundation for long-term success.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I would have to say how much emphasis was placed on entrepreneurship and business skills alongside teaching methodology. I expected to learn about lesson planning and classroom management, but gaining practical knowledge in areas like marketing, finance, and client retention was a big bonus!
Pros
  • The course content was practical and well structured.
  • There's a focus on entrepreneurship and professionalism.
  • The course provides flexible online learning.
Cons
  • Balancing assignments with other commitments may sometimes be challenging, but honestly, it wasn't for me.
  • While the online format is flexible, some learners may miss having more real-time support.
  • Doing this course may be tough if you're not used to independent study. But if you're serious about this, you'll be perfectly fine.

Fantastic coirse

I believe this program has me well prepared to step out into my next phase teaching English while living abroad in Thailand. I hadn't given much thought to how different it would be to the classrooms I've taught in before but this opened my eyes. There is an enormous amount of learning materials and guides to support me beyond this training and the support from tutors when required was prompt and thorough. The additional materials and resources available will be a great tool for me now that I have stepped back into the classroom as a teacher again and I encourage anyone considering kr currently studying to take every advantage of what's available.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I were to do it all again, I wouldn't procrastinate as much as I did and I wouldn't second guess myself in each assessment. The materials are all there and if you put in the time and effort you can do quite well.
Pros
  • Online flexibility
  • Downloadable resources
  • Great affordability.
Cons
  • Without structured classes it is easy to fall behind.
  • Reliance in stable internet was at times problematic
  • The curriculum was very different to what I kearned at university so was challenging for me.

Comprehensive and Fun

The course serves as a comfortable and challenging introduction to the TEFL industry. The course was structured and optimised to provide all the information required to get started. Despite being online, the course finds creative ways to make sure its students are exposed to the necessary practical scenarios and knowledge. The support from the course correspondents(assignment markers etc.) was excellent. Assignments were marked timely, and the markers always provided in-depth feedback.

The presentation and flow of the content is exceptional, and the wide variety of activities interspersed throughout created a thoroughly engaging experience.

This course can be completed easily within the six-month access window, even with limited free time.
