I'm a native English speaker, born in the UK, where I lived for over 40 years until I moved to Spain. There have been many occasions over the years, I have wanted to teach English as a foreign language but have never found a course suitable for me - until I found the Tefl Academy! It had everything I was looking for, particularly being able to study at my own pace online while also having recognised accreditation to follow my dream. The 168 hour Level 5 course is in 10 easy-to-follow units, with 3 assignments that consolidate knowledge. I never utilized the support however knew it was there if needed. 5*

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?

I wouldn't worry as much! I would also probably cut down on reading some of the websites I came across which confused information I was taking in, so I would definitely stick with reputable English teaching websites/tutors etc.

The staff at The TEFL Academy created a very clear and easy to follow program. Each section is laid out and the online nature of the program allows for a great deal of extra materials to be linked for the industrious student. Most important to me was that the staff was extremely flexible. When a stressful situation forced me to stop my studies for a short period, they were amenable to me pausing the course and resuming at a later date. All in all, it was a great experience and provided me a solid foundation on which to build my experience as a TEFL teacher.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?

I would have put more energy into completing my initial assignment so that I might have finished the course before I was forced to pause it.

I found this course to be very engaging and helpful in learning how to teach English. It was very easy to navigate through the contents in the course. The assessments and assignments really helped me put into practice the concepts that I learned. I also enjoyed the interactive activities in the lessons, it really helped me understand the content. Through studying this course, I learned new things about English that I was unfamiliar about before. Overall, it was money well spent and I would recommend this course.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?

I would spend less time to plan out the course assignments.

I found this course engaging and thorough. I learnt a lot, the online units were interesting and the assignments were well thought out and quickly marked, with insightful and constructive feedback. The tutors were easy to contact and helpful, and I feel well set-up to begin teaching. A lot of emphasis is put on lesson planning and the TEFL interactive style of teaching, which I found very useful. The jobs board has a lot of options and, although I haven't had to use it, it seems like plenty of help is available for job seekers.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Don't leave too much time between doing the online units and completing the assignments as you will need to remember information from the units in order to complete the assignments.

The software was so easy to use and I just loved being able to see how far through each unit and lesson I was with a % !
It was very streamline and structured and easy to follow. I enjoyed the quizzes and how transparent the course was. I knew what I was learning about and exactly what was coming up in later units which made it easier for me to take my time and to navigate the course.

I did the course part-time whilst working full time and so was easy to fit into my busy schedule and complete the course at my own pace.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?

Not deciding to take "a week off" over Christmas as it turned out to be three...

Overall experience with an online level 5 TEFL course is something that I can recommend to everyone interested in a teaching career. While I was completing this course, I was provided with lots of materials, useful sites, and help from the academy. The support and response that I received from The TEFL Academy for all my questions was quick, useful, and very clear. The tasks were challenging enough to truly put the new knowledge gained from this course to work. Materials for teaching and lessons were fun to work through. There was not a single moment where the course would leave me fell bored or demotivated to study or even finish it. I feel like my money was truly invested in something useful. I passed the course recently and I can say that coming out of it, I learned plenty of new things about teaching English. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?

It was very fun when I had to design my own lesson. I was very surprised to find out that it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. It was very challenging in the beginning but also very rewarding when I completed it successfully.

This was a great course and I have no regrets partaking. I was concerned at first due to the fact that I do not have a teaching degree. However, the well designed curriculum was easy to follow. The course, especially the assignments, were challenging but definitely worth it. The step by step advice and how to proceed through assignments was extremely helpful. I enjoyed this course as I was able to work at my own pace which is great for anyone who is working and studying and childrearing. I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to teach English. Finally my deciding factor for this particular TEFL course is that is is the only one certified in both USA and UK. This was an added bonus for me.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?

I would say time management and sticking to a schedule. Also read everything! It helps with the assignments!

I enjoyed the course very much. It was a lot of content but absolutely doable. The content was adequate and it covered everything I needed to know to start teaching as a English Teacher. I initially thought the assignments to be daunting since I knew nothing about teaching, but when I started working on it step by step and referred back to the course material, I found that it was achievable. The course helped me immensely as I started teaching straight away. I knew how to plan lessons and how to plan my time accordingly. The support was good and the feedback prompt. I would recommend the TEFL Academy to anyone who’d like to teach English as a foreign language.

Why did you choose this program?

Because of geological location; however, the reason I chose this particular program was in part due to it looking more official than the others. On my trip to a foreign country (South Korea), I was told by my friend that I was very knowledgeable about what I knew and wondered how I would do at teaching. With my current job, it made sense with the way the program was laid out.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The provider assisted with making me dig deeper into what I already knew about the subjects; on my own, it was up to me to decide mine on topics' materials for every assignment (the provider also assisted in the matter by providing templates). When it came to reviews, the assessor assisted in what I need to improve and what was good, if not great.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

If I had to give advice to someone that wanted this program, it would be to take their time. Although it can be done as quickly as needed, I would recommend them to take their time. Rushing will make them impatient and the longer lessons seem daunting, making one miss the simple things one already knows.

Be prepared to not have reviews on some of the lessons, as it will seem as they are abundant in the beginning.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

An average day, as it is an online course, is, however, the students want it to be. However, I would recommend doing half a lesson in 2 to 3 days, then the other. Even so, that is still pushing it for those who are struggling; spending 1 hr a day may be enough, depending on how much one covers in that hour.

I myself tried to cover a lesson a day; in the beginning, it worked out fine, until you get to the longer lessons; then you have to take into account the assignments, which would take almost a week to perform properly.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

When going abroad, I was fearing that I would not be able to answer the questions that were being asked. But after a while, I felt more comfortable about that.

There are still times I feel I would not have the answer to some questions, but I am comfortable now that, if asked a question I don't know, I could easily answer it with the appropriate response.

Is there any type of information you would like to point out to others?

Yes. I would point out that it would be a good idea to find out what requirements one needs for the teaching job they want. It is important to note that there is paperwork that is needed as well when going abroad that needs to be taken into account. These two things are easily missed in the thought process.

What is your favorite travel memory?

One of my favourite travel memories is when I was in Croatia with a friend and we decided to venture in Bosnia Herzegovina for a few days. We stayed in a crazy hostel, with even crazier owners! They brought us to a rave in a cave which was so much fun. The next day we got to explore Mostar and we also traveled to Sarajevo and did a walking tour. It was so interesting!

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Getting to work for The TEFL Academy has given me opportunity to grow in many different ways. I speak to a range of different people from different places daily which is really interesting and sometimes we do have little chats about where in the world we are! I've also significantly improved my geography, which is handy!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

My favourite stories are from teachers who teach young learners. The students get so attached to their teachers and they always have gifts from them that the children have made! I love to see the photos also; we often share these on our social media (with consent). It's a good way to show current and future students the opportunities out there when they get their qualifications.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would love to go on our Vietnam internship! I've always wanted to travel to Vietnam because it does look absolutely beautiful, but the internship sounds like a very rewarding one also. Getting to travel the world by also helping those to further their future prospects is an amazing opportunity.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I think our company is unique in many different ways. Our organization is special because we really do believe in the power of education. We all, in some way or another, have traveled to many different places across the world, and the majority of us have taught also. This gives us a real insight into the actual world of TEFL and the teachers.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Being successful means a lot of different things for different people. I think a successful company really values what they are intending to do, and I believe The TEFL Academy does it in every way. My hope for our organization is that it grows and expands to cover all across the world! Providing a course that helps individuals to further themselves but also to educate others is something that is very special.
