I could not recommend Madrid more as a city to experience an internship! Guaranteed amazing social life, opportunities to explore Spain and travel, meet incredible like-minded people and get a great boost to your CV as well as an invaluable experience to network!

It goes without saying that Thalassa is there for anything you need...be it finding your perfect internship or recommending a great bar ;)

I had previously studied Spanish in Spain and knew I wanted to go back. I looked around for internships online and finely settled on Intern Madrid because it seemed like the best program and at a really reasonable price. The people were great right from the start. I had a couple Skype sessions in order to figure out my interests and what I wanted out of an internship and got a great placement. Upon arrival I immediately felt welcomed and there were lots of great events to meet people and make friends. The people at work were also really great and made you feel included.

Thalassa was really great and was always there if you needed anything. Whether it was a restaurant recommendation, bringing you to a store or even letting me borrow her iron when we didn't have one. She really helped to make this experience a great one.

The housing was great. I had a pretty big apartment and even a balcony in my room and overall I had no complaints about it.

My work experience at the job was great. They gave me a lot of responsibility and freedom and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I just found a full time job now that I am graduating and this internship really stood out. I was able to talk about so many applicable experiences that I feel set me apart.

Overall this was a great experience. I made a lot of great friends, got good experience and fell in love with Spain all over again. I hope to be able to return and work there again some day.

I approached Thalassa and the Intern Group with a somewhat peculiar situation, as I was already in Europe and looking for a way to stay, get a job and enjoy the Spanish culture. Within a few weeks (2) Thalassa had placed me in an incredible internship! Although my circumstance is not applicable to most interns/applicants, this attests to their flexibility, attentiveness and hard work in accommodating anyone's specific needs.

My internship placement could not have been more fun. Not only did the position fit my personality and professional interests, but my employers were incredibly helpful in recommending fun activities, places to eat, and trips to take around Spain. They truly understand that while you are there to work and gain working experience, this is also an opportunity for you to explore the culture and have fun! I found a great balance of work and play, which is exactly what I wanted.

Housing...at first, I had a brief issue with an overbearing landlord who decided it was perfectly okay to enter my apartment without warning, or even without me home, I expressed my concerns with Thalassa she sprung into action! Within 24 hours she had found me the most incredible flat in what quickly became my favorite neighborhood in Madrid—without a crazy landlord. She did so with no questions asked, simply concerned with my happiness and well-being. This set the tone for the rest of my program, encouraging me to approach her with any issues I may have had. This woman is amazing at what she does—I swear she never rests!

Don't worry about making friends—Intern Group goes out of their way to ensure friendships are made between interns and staff alike with Friday Tapas nights, movie nights, trips to Toledo, and just the normal-day "hey let's grab drinks after work!" Or, if learning Spanish is on your to-do list, Thalassa quickly found me an amazing Spanish tutor that I'm still in touch with!

I have, and will continue to, recommend this program to friends. And I cannot wait to return to Madrid and see the city I love, as well as the friends I made while there!

I spent 4 awesome months in Madrid. I couldn't find a placement in the UK, but the overall experience I got on this programme is unlike anything I would have got at home! I got to meet a lot of new people, from my internship, Erasmus, and loads of socials from Intern Madrid. This is a great chance to do start your career, make new friends and contacts, and travel in this beautiful country!

I could not have asked for better accomodation, which was of exceptional standard, with students of my age, and in a perfect location! I also loved the Metro system in Madrid, where I had no problems- it is so easy and convenient to get around in these. Madrid is a beautiful city, with lots to do.

Obviously, employers value experience, but working abroad really stands out! I could not have been happier with everything here, I would definitely reccomend this! Thank you for everything Thalassa, it would not have been nearly as good without you!

What would you improve about this program?

Overall, the whole experience was amazing. Now when I look back on it I realize that I was missing home and worried about not speaking Spanish, but none of the other interns spoke Spanish and we all got along great. I'm still in touch with most of them as well as two colleagues from work. I definitely developed professionally and personally, I was quite shy talking to strangers before, but during the program I was forced to do it everyday and now I have no problem! I'll finish by saying that Madrid is the BEST place in the world! Literally has everything but all so close together, it's like a village with everything, I could never be bored and I will be back soon!

What would you improve about this program?

I would like to have had my own bathroom. I think I could have asked for one but the program price increased.

I spent a few months in Madrid on an Intern Madrid programme. From the moment I arrived I knew that if I needed anything I would be able to approach Thalassa. My accomodation was great, clean and in a good part of town and I was with a bunch of cool people.
My job was exactly what I wanted to do. Working in an exciting and friendly start up where my ideas were listened to and I felt like I learnt something new every day. I am really excited to put the social media experience (among other things) that I gained on my resume.
The activities were also awesome, a trip to beautiful (but cold!) Segovia, watching Flamenco and tapas, tapas, tapas!
I loved it and I loved Madrid. Thanks Intern Madrid and a big thanks to Thalassa for making it a really great trip.

What would you improve about this program?

I would probably say a trip further afield would be great, perhaps to Seville or something?

Recently I spent a month in Madrid developing my design skills thanks to InternMadrid. I chose InternMadrid because the programme looked value for money and the experience is what I needed. They gave me the change to move, live and work in a Spanish company for a month. With little knowledge of speaking Spanish, it was challenging but the language barrier wasn't a problem.

The reason I chose Madrid was because I wanted experience a different culture and see how another country uses design in their daily lives. This experience means that I can now further my career as a graphic designer and get into a job I want.

The InternMadrid staff have been there whenever I need them, especially Thalassa. Whenever I got lost or just needed someone to show me the way around Madrid she was there.

Overall this experience has been worth it. At first the idea can be daunting and the money aspect can be scary too but I feel that everything was worth it and if I was given the chance, I would do it again...maybe when there are more interns!

What were some of the issues with your living situation?

Hiya, Living situation wasn't bad at all, your usually with other interns. When I first got there I was a bit surprised at the flat as I thought it was going to be more like a uni halls or something, but the decor is quite dark and relatively small. Also had an oven that you had to light yourself which was an experience! Haha. But you get used to it really quickly and I loved my flat by the end. I...

How much money would I need to take with me?

I was in Madrid for two months and had prepared about €1600. I did budget and because I was very careful with money at the start I had quite a bit left over towards the end. It also depends on how much you eat out because that does get quite expensive.

Why did you choose this program?

The Intern Group, with its wide range of opportunities abroad, came at a perfect time. They were very helpful in terms of getting the most appropriate internship for me and were ready to help with any questions I had.

Madrid ended up being my chosen destination because I’ve always wanted to go to Spain. This also seemed like the perfect opportunity to put my bilingual skills to the test.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

I found this opportunity through my Golden Key Honour Society membership. Everything after that, I basically organized with the Intern Group, which provided me with a number of pre-departure materials and informational videos about the workplace in Spain.

The Intern Group also helped me in terms of creating a more complete CV and found me an internship that pushed not only my academic knowledge to the test, but also made my own experiences as an immigrant be put to good use.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would tell them to make the best of it. Remember that while you are there to work, you are also there to enjoy yourself. Go out with your flatmates, explore the city, and most importantly, travel! I myself went into the program thinking only of my job and how I wanted to be successful at it (which is important). In the end, I came out with new friends and a wide range of experiences that I will always treasure in my heart!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

You'll go to work in the morning, and if you're going to Spain, expect to take long lunch breaks with your colleagues. If you go during the summer, you'll usually be able to leave the office around 3 PM. Normally, however, they tend to work late in Spain.

The Intern Group has a wide range of activities organized for you throughout your stay. We, for example, were able to see an authentic Flamenco show, went to the Bernabéu Stadium, and had a day trip to Toledo. These were the activities we paid for in advance. Throughout the week, there are also events such as bowling with other interns and having a picnic at the park.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was that I would not feel comfortable where I lived or with whom I lived. I overcame it by actually making the effort to get to know the people around me. In the end, I got to make friendships that I believe will last a lifetime.

My views changed because I realized we were all fearing the same thing, and therefore the only way to overcome it was to become friends and make the best of our time in Madrid.

Some more advice..

If you're going abroad, you should be open to new experiences and remember that you are in a new country with people who will likely have different mindsets than you. This should not be a scary thing but quite the contrary as there is no better opportunity to learn and grow than when you are in a completely different setting.

I would also advise that you make the effort to speak and learn the language because it will make your experience much more rewarding and those who receive you in their country much more likely to be open and friendly to you.

Lalita was born in Utrera-Seville and got her degree in International and Commercial Secretariat from the British Chamber of Commerce of Seville. She also trained in Emotional Intelligence and developed her career at a Multinational firm over the course of twenty years. During her time there she worked directly with the Company’s President of Europe and the COO. Lalita is well skilled and accustomed to working in International Environments. She has wide and comprehensive experience in Management and Business, and now directs internships in Spain.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

People, including leaders, are what bring success to a company. This success depends heavily on human resources and the strategies used in this field. It is difficult to innovate and develop attractive products and services without qualified and motivated people. Leaders and teams with values, qualities and strengthened capacities for projection are key to meeting targets. Because of that, it is really important to have on the job training and courses provided to all members of the team.

What country have you always wanted to visit?

I am grateful to be able to say that I have travelled a lot through out my life, but there are many places still left that I want to see. I believe that travelling for work and for pleasure is a key part of learning and understanding the planet we live on and the people we share this world with. If I had to choose a place to go right now then I would choose Patagonia. I have always wanted to visit the National Park Perito Moreno which is home to one of the most famous and impressive glaciers.

Why is language learning and cultural immersion important to you?

It is life changing. Cultural immersion offers us a great opportunity for personal and social development. Getting to know the culture of another country and understand daily life in other places, allows us to change our vision of the world and of ourselves. It is also a way of knowing ourselves and learning how to manage certain situations and new opportunities. Traveling, meeting new people and new cultures helps us define our personality and discover new values. Without understanding other cultures we can never really experience life fully. To close yourself off to other cultures is to close yourself off to ideas, innovation, experience. Many people travel without fully immersing themselves. I am here to encourage our students to live like we live in Spain. Of course sometimes you might want to eat your traditional food, but while on the program we encourage everyone to eat Spanish food, learn Spanish phrases and understand our history and culture.

What was your favorite traveling experience?

I travelled around India and that was an incredible experience for me. I learnt a lot about many human values. It taught me (forced me to learn!) how to do the “switch” in my mind to drop my Western patterns in so many senses. It offered me the great opportunity to get under the skin of many people of all kinds and classes. It is an experience that I have repeated for several years and that has changed my worldview. Nevertheless, India is just one example of many. I really believe that our favorite travelling experience should be, and probably is, simply the act of travelling. There is no right or wrong destination because everywhere has something to offer us in terms of experiential learning. Some things will affect us more than others, perhaps the food in one place, the kindness of the people in another place, but it is the act of travelling that will enrich our lives.

What language have you always wanted to learn and why?

I always wanted to learn English and I am very proud that I was able to learn it because it is a key tool for communication when you are abroad. English enriches your experience of knowing the world and it is a must in a CV. Apart from English, of course I believe that my mother tongue, Spanish, is a very important language because it is spoken in so many different countries and means that I have been able to talk to people all over The Americas. Apart from those two key languages, I would love to learn a language with a different alphabet because I think it could be a great challenge for me and language learning is great ‘exercise’ for your brain!
