I spent a few months in Madrid on an Intern Madrid programme. From the moment I arrived I knew that if I needed anything I would be able to approach Thalassa. My accomodation was great, clean and in a good part of town and I was with a bunch of cool people.
My job was exactly what I wanted to do. Working in an exciting and friendly start up where my ideas were listened to and I felt like I learnt something new every day. I am really excited to put the social media experience (among other things) that I gained on my resume.
The activities were also awesome, a trip to beautiful (but cold!) Segovia, watching Flamenco and tapas, tapas, tapas!
I loved it and I loved Madrid. Thanks Intern Madrid and a big thanks to Thalassa for making it a really great trip.

What would you improve about this program?

I would probably say a trip further afield would be great, perhaps to Seville or something?

Recently I spent a month in Madrid developing my design skills thanks to InternMadrid. I chose InternMadrid because the programme looked value for money and the experience is what I needed. They gave me the change to move, live and work in a Spanish company for a month. With little knowledge of speaking Spanish, it was challenging but the language barrier wasn't a problem.

The reason I chose Madrid was because I wanted experience a different culture and see how another country uses design in their daily lives. This experience means that I can now further my career as a graphic designer and get into a job I want.

The InternMadrid staff have been there whenever I need them, especially Thalassa. Whenever I got lost or just needed someone to show me the way around Madrid she was there.

Overall this experience has been worth it. At first the idea can be daunting and the money aspect can be scary too but I feel that everything was worth it and if I was given the chance, I would do it again...maybe when there are more interns!

Hi Verica! Whether these internships are paid or not is down to each specific placement company! However, their international internships do tend to be unpaid.

What were some of the issues with your living situation?

Hiya, Living situation wasn't bad at all, your usually with other interns. When I first got there I was a bit surprised at the flat as I thought it was going to be more like a uni halls or something, but the decor is quite dark and relatively small. Also had an oven that you had to light yourself which was an experience! Haha. But you get used to it really quickly and I loved my flat by the end. I...

How much money would I need to take with me?

I was in Madrid for two months and had prepared about €1600. I did budget and because I was very careful with money at the start I had quite a bit left over towards the end. It also depends on how much you eat out because that does get quite expensive.

Why did you choose this program?

The Intern Group, with its wide range of opportunities abroad, came at a perfect time. They were very helpful in terms of getting the most appropriate internship for me and were ready to help with any questions I had.

Madrid ended up being my chosen destination because I’ve always wanted to go to Spain. This also seemed like the perfect opportunity to put my bilingual skills to the test.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

I found this opportunity through my Golden Key Honour Society membership. Everything after that, I basically organized with the Intern Group, which provided me with a number of pre-departure materials and informational videos about the workplace in Spain.

The Intern Group also helped me in terms of creating a more complete CV and found me an internship that pushed not only my academic knowledge to the test, but also made my own experiences as an immigrant be put to good use.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would tell them to make the best of it. Remember that while you are there to work, you are also there to enjoy yourself. Go out with your flatmates, explore the city, and most importantly, travel! I myself went into the program thinking only of my job and how I wanted to be successful at it (which is important). In the end, I came out with new friends and a wide range of experiences that I will always treasure in my heart!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

You'll go to work in the morning, and if you're going to Spain, expect to take long lunch breaks with your colleagues. If you go during the summer, you'll usually be able to leave the office around 3 PM. Normally, however, they tend to work late in Spain.

The Intern Group has a wide range of activities organized for you throughout your stay. We, for example, were able to see an authentic Flamenco show, went to the Bernabéu Stadium, and had a day trip to Toledo. These were the activities we paid for in advance. Throughout the week, there are also events such as bowling with other interns and having a picnic at the park.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was that I would not feel comfortable where I lived or with whom I lived. I overcame it by actually making the effort to get to know the people around me. In the end, I got to make friendships that I believe will last a lifetime.

My views changed because I realized we were all fearing the same thing, and therefore the only way to overcome it was to become friends and make the best of our time in Madrid.

Some more advice..

If you're going abroad, you should be open to new experiences and remember that you are in a new country with people who will likely have different mindsets than you. This should not be a scary thing but quite the contrary as there is no better opportunity to learn and grow than when you are in a completely different setting.

I would also advise that you make the effort to speak and learn the language because it will make your experience much more rewarding and those who receive you in their country much more likely to be open and friendly to you.

Interview

What is your favorite travel memory?

During my time travelling Vietnam in January 2024, I experienced many new cultures and ways of life that I was so intrigued by. I also stepped out of my comfort zone to embrace the backpacking lifestyle, and I am so glad I did!

Spending 4 days driving through the mountainous north was an incredible adventure. The amazing people we met who welcomed us into their homes and the memories I made with the group are some ill never forget! The instant friendships I made to share the stunning views and questionable driving with was a bonus.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Since working for TIG, I have become much more versed in international relations building important relationships with people from around the world. From this I have become a much more open and understanding person, speaking with people from different background and learning how they view success in life.

I understand the importance of being open minded, patient and welcome new challenges and experiences as I have witnessed how such experiences can shape your future.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

As an experiencer coordinator, I am lucky enough to build some fantastic relationships with each intern and I always love hearing this experience has helped them in further jobs or life in general. Hearing that this program has given them the confidence to travel more and step out of their comfort zone is probably one that excites me the most as I understand how scary it can be to make the jump and book that flight! And to have been apart of helping them feel safe and support while interning abroad is certainly an amazing feeling.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Ooooh tough question! I have to choose the digital nomad program in Madrid. Firstly, I am always chasing the sun and I have always wanted to visit the beautiful city of Madrid. Secondly, being a digital nomad gives me the perfect opportunity to travel while working which is the dream right? I would take full advantage and see as much of Spain and Europe as possible while still gaining amazing experience in my chosen career field!

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I believe the dedication of our experience coordinators in each destinations makes our company stand out. Each one goes above and beyond to build connection with every intern, constantly reaching out and offer their advice and guidance. The interns feel safe with an incredible support system around them while they experience this adventure abroad.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe the biggest factor would be having the same goal and focus as a large team. This key to creating a successful company. With the same intentions, each team member can ensure they are working to achieve the same goal and therefore always have this as their motivation and continue to grow as a company.
