My Time in Sydney

The six weeks that I had the privilege to study abroad and live in Sydney, Australia, were ones that I will never forget. I quite honestly had the best time meeting locals, CEA CAPA staff, and fellow students I conversed with. From the moment I arrived in Sydney and met with the CEA CAPA staff, I felt like I was truly cared for like my own family. My professors, John Edwards and Andy West, taught me more about being a young man and the importance of connecting with others than I have ever learned before. They gave me multiple unforgettable experiences, like touring the Sydney Cricket Grounds and attending an AFL game at the GWS Giants' home field. The main staff members I conversed with include Fiona Person, Farideh Khoshdel, and Amy O'Rourke. Each one of them gave me an exceptional experience in the CEA CAPA building and believes that they did a great job for all of us. The events that they had in place for us include CEA CAPA Olympics, Blue Mountains Hike, Coogee to Bondi Walk, and the overnight stay at the Taronga Zoo! A few roommates and I had a free weekend and decided to travel to Brisbane, see the Gold Coast, and visit the Australian Zoo, which I recommend for everyone visiting Australia. The moral of the story is that my experience in Sydney is available to others who decide that this program is for them and I hope that ya'll decide to study abroad in the land down under!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Without a doubt, the most exciting event I took part in was skydiving in Wollongong! 5 other students and I had a blast falling from the sky about 15 thousand feet high, and wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
Pros
  • Sight Seeing
  • Connecting with Locals
  • Planned Events

CAPA Sydney experience

My experience abroad in Sydney, Australia, was one of the best times of my life. This experience was one I will never forget and one that I could talk about forever. Doing this program was a huge jump for me because it was my first time leaving the United States and my first time being away from home for that long. I was already so nervous to even fill out my application because I also did not know anyone who was going. I can confidently say that I would not change a single thing about my program or choosing to go. First, CEA CAPA was such an amazing program with spectacular staff, and I would not have thrived in Sydney without them. There was an immense amount of support with whatever I needed, and I knew I could always go to them if I needed a shoulder to lean on or just needed someone to talk to. The staff also had so many activities and excursions for us to attend that were so much fun. A lot of these trips, like the Blue Mountains and the zoo sleepover, were some of my best memories from abroad. Along with CAPA staff, I am eternally grateful for the best friends that I made in this program and for all of our wonderful memories. Everyone in this program was truly trying to meet new people and just have a meaningful time. We spent countless times together laughing, cooking in the common area, and spending nights on the town together. One of my favorite days from abroad was our final day of the program. The entire program came to mine and my roommates' room before going to celebrate Anzac Day around Sydney. That night, everyone came back to our room and we all sat together sharing our favorite memories of the program while singing songs and sharing LOTS of tears. Overall, this program and experience was truly amazing and life changing thanks to all of the wonderful people you meet along the way.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising things I did during my time abroad was snorkeling! My friends and I took a trip to Bali for spring break and spent an entire day snorkeling around an island. This was my first time snorkeling, and a fun fact, I am TERRIFIED of the ocean. It was safe to say that I had never even considered doing something like this before. The only way I got through it and ended up having an amazing time was all thanks to the wonderful friends that I met in my program. Every single one of them was so supportive and encouraging, which made me feel so much better. This experience was also meaningful to me because it showed me that I can accomplish difficult tasks and revealed just how much this program had encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone.
Pros
  • Social life
  • Housing
  • Traveling opportunities

CEA CAPA Study & Intern Program

This program was so great. I have zero complaints about the entire program. The staff was so personable and kind, great communication, and a lot of effort was put in by the CEA CAPA team to make everyone feel comfortable. They made it so easy to become friends with everyone in my program, by planning excursions for us and having so many fun, personable activities during our classes. I was able to make so many deep connections with the other students in my program that I will cherish forever. Our living accommodation was also wonderful, we stayed at the Meriton Suites, which was a very clean and nice environment. CEA CAPA also did great at their roommate matching.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
My roommates had a last minute idea to fly to the Great Barrier Reef and go skydiving on one of our last weekends there. I was hesitant at first, but then I agreed to do it because I knew I wouldn't get that opportunity again. On the day of, I was so nervous and scared, and I had no idea what I had signed myself up for. We rode up in the plane and I was the first to jump out, I think I blacked out for a few seconds but it was the craziest feeling falling from the sky over the Great Barrier Reef. It was such an insane moment that I will never forget. We had so much fun this day and the adrenaline rush we had after was something crazy.
Pros
  • Comfortable Accomodation
  • Friendly Environment
  • Organized Program
Cons
  • One late class time
  • 20 minute walk to train station

An overall great program that lived up to all of my expectations

As a new program added right before the start of my senior year, the winter quarter program in Sydney was a perfect way for me to finish up my college career and fit into my schedule much easier as a quarter program student. Although it went by quickly, had a great time in Sydney and felt truly supported by the center staff. The housing aparthotel style was also very convenient and its location encouraged to be familiar with the public transit system there which made navigating the rest of Sydney and greater Sydney are less daunting. In addition, the timing of the classes allowed me ample time to get out and explore the city and surrounding cities! I would definitely recommend this program to others, especially if you're looking for a rewarding program that can fit into a busy schedule.

What was your funniest moment?
When I was visiting Brisbane over the weekend, my friends and I were sitting in the botanical gardens there. Our first mistake was opening a box of cookies from a trendy place on one of the tables that was surrounding by trees and bushes. As I took my first bite of the cookie (which was delicious by the way -- from "Brookie") a kookaburra that we were looking at just a few minutes prior, swept drop and tapped my friend and I on the head. A little started we looked around and realized that we were also being eyed by three lizards. Safe to say we quickly packed up the cookies and found somewhere else to eat them
Pros
  • great weather and outdoor adventures available (national parks, beaches, etc)
  • feels quite safe overall
  • great public transit and food options
Cons
  • can get crowded in more touristy areas
  • a bit pricy depending on what currency you usually use

UTS student

I’m an undergrad student from California. Sydney is a really good place to go abroad because it’s easily accessible via public transportation, has really cool attractions/ beautifully blends city life with nature life, and has some great universities. It was my first time living by myself and I was given a lot of space to grow and improve. Groceries are accessible, many people in Sydney wake up early (amazing sunrises and things to do), and the people are funny and authentic.

A wonderful experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just come in with no expectations. I started by having a list of places to go to, and I do agree that it helped when deciding plans. But, I’ve also come to believe the best way to make impactful memories is to just do things impulsively. Go randomly walk 11km. Go to a new beach every week. Go hang out in Darling Harbor and walk around with nothing to do but peruse. And somehow, you’ll find yourself with new friends in the craziest of places with the best stories.
Good luck!
Pros
  • easily accessible
  • friendly people
  • amazing lifestyle
Cons
  • expensive housing

Great Experience

Studying at University of Sydney was a challenging but incredible experience. It challenged me academically and had different academic structure as I am used to, but being in Australia was totally worth. it. Sydney is a perfect fit for those who love adventure and a laid back environment. Every weekend you can do completely different things and activities, there is always something new to do. Also, it has a great work/life balance. Everyone is up early to workout and surf to later go to work, so it is a very healthy.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would probably prefer living near the beach.

Student life in Sydney

I was abroad in Sydney for 5 months starting July, leaving the warm summer back home for the winter in Australia. The first week was all about exploring the city and its views which I absolutely fell in love with (light rail and trains will be your best friends). That really made it easy to get located within the city and find stores for our weekly grocery run within walking distance, Coles and Kmart will be the most affordable stores. The student accommodation was through Scape, it was really nice as they had many fun events on different locations around the city however it had many issues regarding the fire alarm going off several times a week. I truly believe I would not have loved my time abroad if it wasn't for the friends I made in and out of school, I do definitely recommend to join a school club that interests you. Take your time enjoying the small things of the city and what it has to offer.

What was your funniest moment?
I think my funniest moment was driving on the left side of the road considering that I have been used to driving on the right side. It was really strange and could not get used to it, I should also mention that Sydney is flooded with cars so it is really hard to find parking and the people drive really fast. So whenever someone would cut me off, I would turn on my high beams for just a second instead of honking like the people in Australia tend to do. However to my disgrace, the car that I was driving not only had the driver on the right but it also had the car lights on the right, so when I turned my high beams on I actually turned on the windshield fluid and wipers. Although I learned from it that time, it happened more times than I can count.
Pros
  • Transportation is really efficient and mostly on time
  • Walkable, very diverse city, has clean public restrooms
  • Beautiful flora and fauna, feeding wallabies
Cons
  • A little more expensive than planned
  • Distances are greater, the beach is 2 hours away from the city
  • Somewhat unsafe at night
