Sydney, Australia Review

My time studying in Sydney, Australia was a once in a lifetime experience, and I owe that to the initiatives and dedication of the CEA CAPA program. I went into this experience knowing one other person from my university, but this program gave me the opportunity to get to know people from all over the world, while creating a safe and comforting place for all students. All students were located the same housing, so this gave everyone the opportunity to get to know one another. This created a tight bond with everyone in the program, and allowed us to expand our experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice for future traveler is to fully immerse yourself in the experience and the culture of the place you are in. This is a once in a lifetime experience to fully live like a local, so it is important to get out of your comfort zone and take advantage of all of the opportunities in the place you are traveling to. Every destination is different, so it is important to try new things while you can.

CEA CAPA Sydney Program Review

I really enjoyed my experience with the CEA CAPA program in Sydney! Sydney is an amazing city with much to offer- whether you love the beach, spending time outside or exploring fun cafes and restaurants, Sydney has something for everyone. The student housing was conveniently located near the USYD and UTS campuses and the surrounding area was filled with yummy cafes and nice areas to walk around. I found the program housing to be a great place to meet new people and is where I met most of my closest friends. Additionally, our CEA CAPA advisor was a great resource for support and was always available to help address any issues.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Say yes to any adventure or opportunity that arises! Whether it's going on a road trip with new friends or exploring new hikes or beaches, some of my best memories came from those spontaneous moments.

Sydney was amazing!

Studying abroad in Sydney was an experience that genuinely changed my life. I had the opportunity to explore a completely unfamiliar place, step outside of my comfort zone, and meet new people! I learned so much about myself and found a love of travel and adventure. While I was initially nervous to go across the world from everything I knew, the CEA CAPA staff was super supportive and made going abroad feel easy. Also, the CEA CAPA staff provided so many amazing suggestions of things to do and see, and we even had unlimited access to public transportation and passes to multiple major destinations in Sydney.

CEA CAPA Education Abroad in Sydney Review

Going abroad to Sydney was the best part of my college experience. I got to meet so many new people and see so many new cities and places that I never thought I would get to. CEA CAPA had the best staff on site to assist you with any needs that you had throughout your abroad time. I loved having the resources of the staff and teachers to ask about where to go locally and where we had to visit on the weekends. It was very comforting to know there were wiser, more established people in the city who cared about us and wanted us to be safe and have the best experience. I could not say enough good things about CEA CAPA and the program in Sydney, and I would 100% recommend it to anyone who asks me!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment was by far when two of my friends and I decided to go skydiving from 15,000 feet up over the Great Barrier Reef! It was the best thing I have ever done, but I couldn't think about it too much before hand or I was going to "chicken out". Eventually, one of my friends who was not as stressed as I was told me that it was going to be something I wish I had done if I don't do it now, and I agreed. After we got done, we went to celebrate at a nearby restaurant and could not stop talking about how amazing it was!
Pros
  • Proximity from housing to classes
  • Proximity to the city and downtown
  • Tons of public transportation options
Cons
  • A flight away from everywhere (but they are pretty cheap!)

Studying in Sydney

I loved my experience studying abroad with CEA CAPA in Sydney. We stayed in student apartments in Scape Darling Square which was a great location, full of young and social people. A huge plus was our Opal Card that we were given by CAPA. It allowed us to travel for free on ferry's and trains allowing us to explore along the east coast and have easy access to beaches, museums, parks and shops. The professors were very kind and encouraging that we get to know the area and allowed a good school to fun balance. If I could choose where to study again and who to study with I would go to Sydney with CEA CAPA all over again.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar and fun new food that I tried was what we students would call a "sushi-burrito". They were sold right across the street from our apartment and we had them for lunch daily!

Wellness in Sydney Australia

My program was based all around wellness in Australia. The entire trip was filled of fun and educational adventures in various locations to learn about the differences in how they live compared to the United States. I was able to go hiking in the Blue Mountains, snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, and went on hiking trails with aboriginal history all for the class I was taking. We reflected on all the adventures we went on and it taught us how to appreciate little things and live in the moment.

What was your funniest moment?
Just listening to the way Australians responded to animals that we would consider dangerous made me laugh. Man O' War jellyfish in the ocean? They just keep swimming. Snakes? They don't even bat an eye. Getting bit by a leech? Some guy told us he used to let them stay attached and then throw them at his friends. Truly was a shock.
Pros
  • Extremely Adventurous
  • Lots of amenities and never ran out of stuff to do
  • Educational
Cons
  • Program was on the shorter end
  • 26 hour travel time going there, 31 hour travel time coming back
  • Jet lag

Sydney changed my life

I studied abroad through CEA CAPA in Sydney, Australia for a 10-week trimester. As someone who had never traveled much outside of the country (let alone to the other side of the world coming from New York), this was such an eye-opening experience that gave me fresh insights into a diverse culture. The combination of pursuing my academic endeavors in the classroom and immersing myself into the Sydney landscape through program events and travel opportunities was an experience I will never forget.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
There was a street festival at one of the suburbs across from the Sydney Opera House called the Rocks that had a plethora of exotic meats and other distinct cuisine. One very noteworthy thing I ate was crocodile meat, which was actually really good!! If you like steak or other prime cuts, this definitely ranks high up there and I would certainly recommend.
Pros
  • Strong support from program staff
  • Immense flexibility to balance academic, professional, and travel endeavors
  • Thoughtful organization of program from start to finish in terms of planned events and academic offerings to suit student interests.
Cons
  • Only got to be there for 10 weeks since my undergraduate institution operates on a trimester basis
  • More limited course offerings than semester-based programs due to coming from a trimester school
  • Learning curve of determine where to eat and food shop
