Teaching in Anyang

The schedule is very easy to work around. It gives you plenty of time to do things before you start at 2:30pm. Once you get into work you have a couple of hours to do your days planning which is more than enough time. There are lots of restaurants, bars and a major grocery/department store within a 2 minute walk from work. The difficulties were simply getting used to the curriculum. Once you get into a routine, this gets much much easier. All in all it has been a great experience so far.

Avalon Songpa Champ

I definitely would not recommend Avalon unless you really don't care about contract specifics. I feel as if AT placed me wherever was fastest and most convenient. I don't believe that this school is a fit for me at all. I had specific requests and they weren't met. Although, AT tried to help me with issues afterwards. I think that more time and thought should be given. Also, there are hundreds of jobs in Seoul and I was only offered two options.

Avalon does not stick to their contract and make adjustments halfway through your time. I signed on to work Monday through Fridays from 2-10 and then four months in they changed their schedule to include Saturdays. We were basically bullied into signing a statement saying that we agreed to possibly work Saturdays.

The training they provided was helpful, however it wasn't paid. It may be different at other campuses, but the foreign teachers are not appreciated here. We don't even have a head Foreign teacher.

I wish that someone would have given me a review of this school. One of my coworkers said that he wanted to give an honest review and it was declined. I definitely wouldn't have signed on to work at Avalon had I been given an honest review.

Avalon is more concerned about money. They want the parents to be happy, but they also don't want the students to be upset. Therefore, when students don't do their work, there are barely any repercussions.

Adventure Teaching was very prompt and helpful in the beginning. I had many questions and they tried to help as best they could. I just wish that I was offered more options for teaching here. Now that I am here, I can see that vast varieties.

Professionalism and support at its best

I had already been living and working in Korea for two years before applying to Adventure Teaching for help finding a new position. I had not used a recruiter before, but I felt that it would be easier than organising everything myself as I had done before. I wasn't wrong.
Adventure Teaching did everything except gift wrap the process for me. They supported me every step of the way and made sure that I was comfortable with each step of the process. I already knew what to expect as I'm now in Korea for my third year, but at no point did the AT team take that as a reason to relax and become neglectful in their dealings with me. They were professional and prompt in their responses and I was confident that with their help I would find the perfect job to suit my wants and needs. AT did not disappoint me.

Great Experience

Adventure Teaching was an excellent recruiter. They returned answers to questions within a reasonable time. They gave detailed instructions for the step by step process for my Visa. They made the whole process very smooth. Just a few weeks ago I lost my wallet and phone. My wallet contained my ATM card and my ARC card. My phone plan and phone was issued through the Arrival Store via Adventure Teaching. I immediately contacted Adventure Teaching regarding my phone and got my replacement phone within a week! It was very efficient and super helpful!

Teaching Review

Adventure Teaching helped me a lot in the beginning. I got plenty of information on how to arrive and how to handle the airport. I recommend this program for singles, especially just out of college. This program can be an amazing experience, but it wasn't quite so amazing for me. Mostly my experience with Korea was bad because of outside factors, Adventure Teaching helped me very well. I do wish that they had done some more research on my school because it closed six months into my contract. My boss has bad business practices which resulted in the school being bankrupt. But other than my school closing, Adventure Teaching helped me get here. I would recommend that you give more specific guidelines on how apartments will be furnished, and what types of clothes to wear, and tips on haggling, because that is something I struggled with in the markets.

I love my job and Adventure teaching helped me get it

I am very pleased with the services they provide. I found the visa process extremely confusing when I tried to do it on my own. Adventure teaching had all the forms, steps and how to fill paperwork out. It was easy to read and follow. If I had any question the staff would promptly send me a reply. They offered me many great schools and were there through the whole process. I am very happy at my job and thankful to the caring and hardworking staff of Adventure Korea.

Great program! Excellent staff!

I called Adventure Teaching looking for a way to get to Korea. I'd never travelled outside of North America; I didn't know the first thing about Korea, but I wanted to teach English. I wanted to see the world, meet new people, and get paid for it. Come on, who wouldn't?

Having no idea how to make this happen, however, I found myself relying fully on the generous assistance of the staff at A.T. They took great interest in my situation and, not only educated me on the fundamentals of life, language, and culture in Korea, but also advised me in detail as I struggled to decide which year-long contract to accept.

My first month in Korea was stressful, to say the least. I started teaching classes the day after I got off the plane. I lived in a temporary apartment. I couldn't sleep past 7:00 in the morning and I'm not a morning person. The only two people that I knew in the entire country lived too far away to meet up, except for on the occasional weekend. I didn't know where to buy groceries or how to order food. I lived off of the granola bars that I'd packed from home and the peanuts that I saved from the plane ride. I'm glad that month is over; I don't want to think about it anymore.

Fast-forwarding to the present, I'm half-way through my first year in Korea and, to my pleasant surprise, I'm happy. At the end of the first month, I moved to a brand new apartment, which is far nicer than anything I'd be able to afford back in the States, and began teaching regular classes at a new branch of the academy. My co-teachers are warm and welcoming and my middle school students are not only bright and interested, but hilarious! Outside of work, I study Korean, meet up with friends, and explore the city. The transition period was clearly not my favorite, but now that I've settled in, it's worth it and I'm enjoying doing exactly what I set out to do: seeing the world, meeting new people, and getting paid for it.

I never would've made it this far without the help and guidance of the friendly people at Adventure Teaching. They helped me find a good place to work in a great country and, although it took some time, the transition was way smoother than it would've been without them!

Whenever my friends back home comment that they're thinking of teaching English in Korea, I refer them to A.T. and tell them to go for it. You never know what's waiting for you on the other side of the ocean!

Good Overall

The staff at Adventure Teaching did a great job getting me interviews with quality schools. They were very organized and informative for me on what to expect in Korea as an Ex-pat. Things in Korea are never as planned out, organized, and as well communicated as my experience in America, but as long as you know that then you can enjoy the spontaneity. Once I got to to my new home my boss took over for making sure I had what I needed, this isn't always the case as I have learned from others.
It took me a while to connect to other foreigners in my city only because I didn't find the local teachers facebook group for my city. In my city the foreigners do a great job of spending time with each other and looking out for each other. I have found the majority of Koreans to be very friendly, welcoming, and helpful as well.
Korea has been a great place to explore many places and is fairly easy to get around even without knowing Korean as long as you are not afraid to ask for and seek out help. I have gotten lost a few times or missed my bus stop a few times because I didn't know Korean, but the Koreans have been great at helping me get back to the right place.
Every teaching job is different and all have pluses and minuses. But over all Korea is a very easy place to work and live.

Thanks for providing such great insight Elizabeth! Nate, we highly recommend taking a TEFL course as we find it helps with building confindence in the classroom and gives you a better idea of teaching English.
