If everyone who ever studied abroad could talk to you, they will first tell you that it was the time that changed their lives, but that getting there was the hardest part. They will tell you that two of the most important decisions regarding your own study abroad experience are what semester to leave, and where you go. While fall study abroad students might tell you this is the semester to go abroad, participants of the spring semester believe the contrary.

Yet instead of choosing between fall and spring semesters, major study abroad organizations now offer summer programs. If you are studying abroad for the chance to go out of your comfort zone and immerse yourself in a culturally driven society, then look beyond the west, and travel east to the Czech Republic for a summer you’ll never forget!

It is important to note that not all study abroad institutions offer programs during the summer months. When researching what program is right for you, make sure to note what programs are available during this season. For the Czech Republic, major study abroad organizations such as AIFS and ISA do offer a summer abroad program.

AIFS: AIFS offers a four-week program at Charles University located in Prague. Students pay a program fee that covers tuition, housing, meal plan, cultural activities, excursions around the Czech Republic, in addition to Krakow and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Participants in this program may earn up to 6 semester credits, and are taught classes in English, ranging from topics such as art history, film studies, history, literature, and political science. Program fees for this program are guaranteed in dollars.

ISA: ISA also offers a program through Charles University in Prague. This history and culturally themed experience holds courses in history, architecture, beginning Czech, business, and film history. Students also go on excursions to Ceske Svycarsko (Czech Switzerland) National Park, Cesky Krumlov, Moravia, and Terezin.

In Czech Republic, summer weather reaches an average temperature of about 18ºC (73ºF) in July. This is much more mild compared to winter, where the temperature can reach as low as 1ºC (33ºF). While traveling by cab or metro definitely has its benefits, Prague is easily accessible by foot, giving a whole new perspective to this breathtaking city.

Nicer weather occurs during the summer months, so you have more of an opportunity explore the scenic pleasures Czech Republic has to offer. Some of the natural treasures you’ll want to see during the summer:

  • South Bohemia - The Trebon Region
  • Pančava Waterfall
  • Macocha Gorge
  • Kampa Island
A Few Quick Packing Tips
  • Comfortable walking shoes (most of the roads in Czech Republic are cobblestone)
  • Umbrella (there is no official rainy season!)
  • Classy clothing (sometimes proper dress is required in for certain nightlife stops, e.g. button up shirt and slacks for men, a cocktail dress for women)
  • Travel guide with few Czech words/phrases in English (though many Czech people speak English, it is helpful to bring a book with translations, just in case)
  • An extra copy of your passport and other travel documents (always a wise idea, you never know!)
